Darius Fulghum will face former contender Ronald Ellis on June 27, Golden Boy Promotions announced Wednesday afternoon. The 10-round bout will headline a Golden Boy Fight Night on DAZN stream (9 p.m. ET/ 6 p.m. PT) take place at the Fantasy Springs Resort Casino in Indio, California.

“With his combination of huge punching power and savvy ring intelligence, Fulghum is quickly rising up the ranks from exciting prospect to legitimate contender,” said Oscar De La Hoya, Chairman and CEO of Golden Boy. “On June 27, he takes a giant step up, headlining a Golden Boy Promotions main event against Ronald Ellis, who has shared a ring with some of the top dogs in the super middleweight division. Is Darius ready? We absolutely think so.”

The 27-year-old Fulghum (11-0, 10 knockouts), who resides in Katy, Texas, last fought on April 20, stopping gatekeeper Cristian Olivas in the fourth round. The win over Olivas took place less than three months after defeating fringe contender Alantez Fox by majority decision.

Fulghum has been very active over the last several months. Including the Ellis fight, Fulghum has fought seven times within a calendar year.

Ellis will be a significant step up in opposition for Fulghum, who is confident he can be victorious and make a statement to the rest of the super middleweight division.

“I’m excited to be headlining my own card,” said Fulghum, who is a graduate of Prairie View A&M’s College of Nursing and is represented by 3 Point Management. “Moments like this is what I’ve sacrificed and trained so hard for. I truly believe I’m ‘Destined for Greatness’ and, on June 27th, the DFG Army is going to show out strong.”

Ellis (18-4-2, 12 KOs), who resides in Lynn, Massachusetts, was stopped by unbeaten contender Erik Bazinyan in round six of his last bout on October 11. In his previous fight in December 2021, Ellis lost a one-sided decision to another unbeaten contender, Christian Mbilli.

The 34-year-old also has a knockout loss at the hands of David Benavidez, but does have victories over Immanuwel Aleem and Matt Korobov. Despite the recent setbacks, Ellis believes his experience and having fought the better opposition will allow him to be victorious.

“I’m excited for the opportunity,” said Ellis, who fought to a split decision draw against Junior Younan in February 2018. “I believe I have the experience and the skill-set to come out on top. I know perfect timing feels like I’m too late, and I know I’m still great in spite of my mistakes, so be ready for a show on June 27.”

meh, ellis brings little these days. that win over korobov also doesnt look so good if you know the details

Don Ackerman 36-40 Glenn Feldman 38-38 Steve Weisfeld 37-39
Korobov injured his ankle and was unable to continue.

none the less, at least fulghum is staying busy. 8 fights in a little over a year is almost unheard of these days for a prospect. hopefully ellis is more motivated for this than some of his last few fights

Golden Boy announces undercard for June 27 show headlined by Fulghum vs Ellis

Eric Priest will headline Golden Boy’s June 27 undercard.

Golden Boy has announced the undercard for their “Fight Night” card on Thursday, June 27, an event headlined by Darius Fulghum facing Ronald Ellis in a 10-round super middleweight bout.

The show will air on DAZN from the Fantasy Springs in Indio, California.

On the card:

Eric Priest (13-0, 8 KO) will take on an opponent to be named in the featured undercard fight, which will be 10 rounds at middleweight. Given the show is 15 days away and given the show is a “Fight Night” and given the show is on a Thursday and given loads of other things, don’t expect something amazing.

Tristan Kalkreuth (13-1, 10 KO) takes on Mario Aguilar (23-9, 19 KO) in a 10-rounder at cruiserweight. Kalkreuth has won five straight since his 2021 loss to Demetrius Banks, and looks to keep moving forward.

Grant Flores (4-0, 3 KO) will meet Josias Gonzalez (2-2-1, 0 KO) in a six-round super welterweight fight,

and Leonardo Sanchez (6-0, 5 KO) will face Jenel Lausa (11-3-1, 7 KO) in another six-rounder, that one at super featherweight.

Darius Fulghum Tops Vaughn Alexander in an Awkward Bout

Super middleweight Darius Fulghum took a step toward his goal of a top-10 world ranking by a major sanctioning body after defeating late replacement Vaughn Alexander in a 10-round unanimous decision Thursday at Fantasy Springs Casino in Indio, California.

The bout, Fulghum’s first main-event appearance, saw him win on all three judges' scorecards, 98-82, 98-92 and 99-91.

Fulghum (12-0, 10 KOs), 27, from Houston, was initially scheduled to face veteran Ronald Ellis. However, Ellis fell ill earlier in the week, prompting Alexander (18-12-1, 11 KOs), 38, from St. Louis, to step in on short notice. Known for his ability to disrupt prospects’ plans, Alexander made the fight challenging for Fulghum, demonstrating his experience in last-minute matchups, and overall ring intelligence.

The statistics highlighted the fight's dynamics: Fulghum landed 168 punches out of 511, while Alexander connected with 78 out of 244. Their connect percentages were nearly identical, with Fulghum at 33 percent and Alexander at 32 percent.

The first round was tentative, with both fighters hesitant to engage, leading to an underwhelming start. Fulghum was cautious in his approach, and Alexander appeared to conserve energy for the latter half of the fight. Despite this, Fulghum showcased his potential, though he is still developing as a fighter. Alexander aimed to land a significant shot rather than winning rounds, leading to a less attractive fight and frustrating the audience as Fulghum’s typically high punch volume dropped.

Between the sixth and seventh rounds, Fulghum informed his corner that his right hand was hurting. This injury, coupled with Alexander's tricky style, contributed to a lackluster fight that failed to excite the crowd. Fulghum's debut as a main-event fighter did not meet expectations, partly due to his injury and partly due to Alexander's tactics.

The rounds became repetitive as Fulghum relied on his youth as much as his skill to secure the victory. While Fulghum emerged victorious, his performance likely fell short of his aspirations. The right hand injury and the disruption caused by the late replacement may have impacted his performance. Fulghum's win highlighted areas for improvement as he continues his journey toward becoming a top contender.

Had Fulghum winning 99-91, few close rounds could've went Alexander's way I suppose, i did like his lefts to the body, his best shot and the only punch he landed really, tbh it was probably better than anything Fulghum landed but the volume just wasn't there , Fulghum injured his right hand early apparently and it would explain why he didn't sit down on his punches, a lot of pitty patty combos thrown, he was busy Fulghum but I expected more devil in his work,, neither man went through the gears and Fulghum ran out a wide winner, couldn't hurt Alexander though
