Wardley Considering Options For A World Title Fight Over Rematch With Clarke

Fabio Wardley is exploring the option of boxing for a world title instead of a potential rematch with Frazer Clarke.

Wardley and Clarke fought out one of the best domestic fights in recent times when they collided for the British and Commonwealth heavyweight titles on March 31. The fight that was labelled “Bad Blood” had plenty spilled; both gave everything until the final bell.

The three judges scored a draw, and a rematch would inevitably prove popular, but Wardley is considering other options.

“Look, I think I'm sixth with the WBO, 10th with the WBA, 15th maybe with the WBC,” the 29 year old said. “I'm in the mix for all of them to be honest. So this is the other question in terms of obviously when people ask about the rematch and stuff.

“The other question is do I follow those routes? Do I try and track down one of [the world titles]? The belts are soon to fragment – do I want to position myself into trying to fight for a world title? So I've got options. So we're going to assess and see what's best for me.”

Wardley has been a free agent since his separation from Matchroom Boxing and Eddie Hearn. His former promoter recently suggested Johnny Fisher as an alternative opponent for the defending champion, but Wardley thinks it’s too soon.

“I think Johnny's a great guy, good friend of mine and he's got a lot of talent, he's got a lot in him, so he could be in the mix of us,” he said. “I don't think he's there just yet. I wouldn't like Eddie [Hearn] to over-push him and push him too far. I think he needs to go through a couple of proper fights; proper tests; be in with a real competitor. Someone with ambition; someone who's really up for it; really game; ready to go.

“Because you don't want to get into the mix with the likes of me and Frazer [Clarke] who have been through wars and stuff and then you find yourself in the deep end and it's uncomfortable for you. So someone like Johnny [Fisher], still a young lad, there's absolutely no rush to push him. I think he could mix with us, but I think it would be a smarter decision to kind of edge him in a bit more.”

Wardley has worked his way up from small hall shows to headlining at the O2 Arena, but did not come through the traditional amateur route. He instead found his way into the sport through white-collar boxing, competing in four contests, and winning them all by knockout.

“I just fell into it,” said Wardley. “It was the gym I joined – it was a white-collar gym. They were just boxing, doing boxing classes and bits and bobs. And the guy who owned the gym used to put on white-collar shows. And I was two or three months into training and he said, ‘Look, do you want to do a show? Do you fancy it?’ And I said, ‘Yeah, f*** it. I'll have a go’.

“And then, yeah, it just kind of, that's when the rollercoaster took off, really. I remember distinctly when I got my hand raised for the first time and I thought, ‘Yeah, this is the feeling, this is the one, I've found it, this is the mark’.”

Wardley is one of the few white-collar fighters to make a successful switch to professional boxing, but hopes that his success will inspire others to make the transition.

“That’s the whole plan of this, that’s the whole objective behind all this,” he said. “To be the kind of white light that people can look towards; the one people can look up to and go, ‘You know what? Fab’s done it.’ And my big thing is, if you love the sport of boxing, if you care about it, if you want to do well in it, you can succeed in it.

“That option via white-collar is there for you. You have to do a lot of things; you’ve got to stay committed along the way, but it’s there for you all the same.”

Fabio Wardley Confirms Rematch With Frazer Clarke Remains an Option

The O2 Arena on March 31 was the scene of one of British boxing’s most entertaining and bloody British title fights in recent memory. Fabio Wardley (17-0-1, 16 KOs) and Frazer Clarke (8-0-1, 6 KOs) slugged it out for 12 rounds, with both fighters forced to fight through adversity to remain standing at the final bell.

A bloodied, bruised and swollen Wardley retained his British and Commonwealth heavyweight titles via a split-decision draw.

Promoter Ben Shalom spoke post-fight about his intention to secure a rematch between the pair, given the success of the event and the entertainment both Wardley and Clarke provided on Easter Sunday.

Speaking to BBC Radio Suffolk, Wardley suggested he would be open to a rematch with the Olympic bronze medalist because he wants to be involved in big fights and occasions.

“I’m always looking for the big fights, the big opponents, the big occasions,” Wardley told BBC Radio Suffolk.

“I want to be part of the big events, so there are no steps back for me; it’s always marching forward.”

However, Wardley said he would not be rushed into deciding when he would rematch Clarke and he had already told BS he had other options.

“I’m still undefeated, I’ve still got all my belts, I’m still in a prime position in terms of sanctioning bodies and rankings, so there are still options for me on the table,” he added.

“There are massive amounts to learn from that [Clarke fight]. It was the first time I’ve had a massive cut like that, the first time I’d gone 12 rounds.

“Knowing I’ve done it and I can do it going forward, having that faith and that self-belief, I still had a lot in the tank, so it gives you good confidence if I have to go through all that again.”

Wardley-Clarke Rematch ‘A Possibility’ For Portman Road

Fabio Wardley’s rest and relaxation time is over. The British and Commonwealth heavyweight champion has taken a few weeks to recover from his bruising encounter with Frazer Clarke and has recently been tripping the light fantastic celebrating his beloved Ipswich Town’s promotion to the Premier League after an absence of 22 years.

It is time for Wardley, 17-1 (16 KOs), to get back to the grind and back on the circuit and that will mean talking about the 12 rounds he and Clarke shared at the O2 Arena in March. Wardley eventually retained his titles after a split draw.

The successful promotion was built around Wardley’s insistence that his education on the rough, tough white collar scene and willingness to bite down and fight his way out of trouble would trump the Olympic silver medallist’s amateur pedigree and better technique.

Both men proved plenty to each other. Wardley stood in front of an accomplished amateur and did well to hold himself together and battle through fatigue and a damaged nose whilst Clarke got up off the floor after a fifth round knockdown and showed that he was more than ready to go to the trenches.

“[I’ve got] A massive level of respect for him. You hadn’t seen that level of resilience and grit from him. If I’m honest, I doubted if it was there,” Wardley told Sky Sports.

“I doubted if he really wanted it and really wanted to take himself there. I thought, ‘Ok, let me see.’ I know I’ll go there. I’ll go there for fun. I thought, ‘Let me take you there and see if you wanna come along for the ride.’ To be honest, he was there the whole way through. I found a very happy dance partner.

“We’ve had very brief conversations [since]. More so just like, ‘That was a hell of a fight. We did something there.’ Not so much ‘Congratulations’ but ‘Fair dos.’”

As exciting as the 12 rounds were that Wardley and Clarke shared, it was also evident that both need to tighten up a little more before they jump in with the world’s top operators. A rematch would not only be an extremely high profile and lucrative affair, it would also give each fighter the chance to show off any improvement.

The interest generated by the first fight gives Boxxer the chance to get creative with venues. The O2 Arena would seem like a safe, natural fit but as Wardley is an ardent Ipswich Town supporter, a late summer open air event at their home stadium, Portman Road, would give the rematch a real ‘big time’ feel and serve as ideal curtain raiser for Town’s return to the top flight of British football. Logistics may well make the suggestion a non-starter - for this year at least - but it is an idea which has been discussed.

“It’s a possibility. I think that’s where it sits at the moment,” Wardley said. “It’s an option and a possibility. It’s not really much further down the line than that. There’s a lot of details and things that need to be crossed off. A lot of things that need to sorted out first.”

Promoter Confident in a Fabio Wardley-Frazer Clarke Rematch in 2024

Boxxer promoter Ben Shalom hopes the pace-setters for the heavyweight fight of the year will meet again before the end of 2024.

In March, British and Commonwealth heavyweight champion Frazer Clarke and Fabio Wardley shared 12 memorable rounds at the O2 in London and, in the end, could not be separated by the judges. Clarke had been down, Wardley had been rocked, and the latter’s nose had been broken.

“Look, they both took a lot of punishment in that event,” said Shalom, who promotes Clarke. “They both need a bit of time out – even if they don’t want a bit of time out. Sometimes that’s the hardest thing with these sort of fighters, but that fight was brutal.

“You want them to take some time, but both of them seem to be recovering a little quicker than I expected, and I expect to see the fight this year. I do. But both of them have other big options. That’s the thing. A lot of fighters in that heavyweight division, there’s a lot of options out there for them, and I think Frazer Clarke, in particular – who we look after – he’s already had options presented to him, plenty of different options. But if you’re looking at the biggest fight for both of them, that’s the biggest money fight.”

Shalom was widely criticized last year for not allowing Clarke to fight Wardley, instead making him take more bouts to build his professional experience.

March 30 in London made that look like a shrewd move.

“No-brainer,” Shalom said. “If anything, it was ambitious and [still] early for Frazer. Even then. The same people who said we should have pulled him out were saying we were putting him in too early. You can’t really win, but we look after our fighters and I’m really pleased. It was an obvious decision in the first place, and to see it come off the way it did proved it to everyone.

“Frazer proved a lot of people wrong. He proved what we knew he had, and he went in there with limited experience in a professional ring and showed his heart for 12 rounds against a guy that was always dangerous, even when he’s down and out – and I think [Wardley] would give anyone problems because of that. Both of their stocks rose. To fight in front of over a million people who tuned in, to fight in a heavyweight clash like that, at the O2, that’s what creates stars.

“That’s what we saw with Anthony Joshua and Dillian Whyte. Their careers will never be the same after that fight.”

It is well known that Wardley is a fight-to-fight free agent who likes to keep his options open, and Shalom anticipates that continuing despite the success of the promotion last time out.

“He’s always been a free agent, and that’s the way they roll. I respect that, and I think both Wardley and Clark are looking at the rematch,” Shalom said. “I think it’s the biggest fight for both of them, so that looks like the most likely fight for Fabio Wardley next – but we will see."

Fabio Wardley Prioritizing Frazer Clarke Rematch Over Promotional Agreement

Fabio Wardley signing with a promoter will not prevent a rematch with Frazer Clarke, according to his team.

Rumors in boxing circles persist that the British and Commonwealth heavyweight champion, who has long relished his independence from a major promoter, will sign for one of the most influential in Britain.

There exists a risk that if that promoter is not BOXXER, who are guiding Clarke – the rival he drew with in so entertaining a contest in March – the sought-after rematch between them will be jeopardised, but his adviser Mike Ofo insists that Wardley’s determination to fight Clarke again means that that will be considered while they decide on his next move.

“With what we’re seeing in boxing now, promoters are willing to work together,” Ofo said. “They’re realising that there’s still money in it with working together. Fabio wants that fight, so he’s not gonna go and join a promoter that’s going to say, ‘No, that fight’s not on the cards’. If he’s to get involved with any promoter, his fundamental is he wants to have that rematch. If it doesn’t happen it’s not because of Fabio Wardley or because he’s joined with another network

“That’s a fight he wants and that we’ve been actively trying to make. If that fight doesn’t happen it’s nothing to do with Fabio Wardley; his instruction to us – his team – is to go out and make that fight happen. We’ve been speaking with [Clarke’s] promoter; we’ve been trying to get that fight made next; it’s a fight that he’s ecstatic about, and he’s got a lot of confidence that he can stop Frazer Clarke. It’s a fight we’re trying to make.

“Fabio’s an active heavyweight, so by the end of the year we want this rematch to take place. I don’t want to say too much, but we’re in the works of making it happen. In terms of our intention – our intention would be to have this fight as soon as possible.

“We want the fight. I can’t talk about what they say they want and what they actually want – maybe they’re two different things. I can confidently say that we want the fight and we are pushing for the fight to happen. I’m pretty confident [it’ll be next]. If we had both fighters it’d be done already. But we don’t, unfortunately. There is some confidence that the fight can still be next.

“It was a brutal fight, and it’s good for the boxer to have some downtime – mentally as well. We see the physical, but mentally it’s quite draining to have a fight like that. There was an assumption that his nose was broken, etcetera. His nose was fine. He was just bleeding heavily. Within a couple of weeks he was back feeling fine. We’re not gonna rush him into anything but he’s ready to go again. He’s back training. It’s a matter of when we can get a date. Hopefully, if we can get a deal over the line, that fight will happen.”

Wardley, 29, is managed by Dillian Whyte, and Ofo also said that Whyte is back in the gym and that his next fight will “definitely” take place before the conclusion of 2024, before responding to rumours of Wardley potentially signing with allegedly’s Queensberry Promotions with: “He’s a free agent and we’re talking to everybody, including Queensberry. He’s a hot property. If you’re a smart promoter you’d want him on board, so we’re having conversations with everyone.

“We always go fight by fight, so if it’s in his best interests – because it’s all about Fabio and his future – then he will remain a free agent. If somebody puts in an offer that we can’t refuse because it serves him well, then we will make the right decision to secure his future.”

That is a good set of all British heavyweight fights if you add AJ vs Dubois. They'd probably need a bigger co-main but they're good competitive fights. Chuck in Inoue vs Wood, Ball or Davies? Sheeraz vs Eubank would be good for this card too.

Wardley was all out but Clarke couldn't handle his explosions of punches. It's flashy stuff and eye catching work. He needs to be running into some heavy punches when he does that but he's willing to get knocked out himself by the looks of it so an opponent has to give ground and Clarke was struggling. I think Wardley can go to the well again although the scar tissue around his nose is opening up regularly now. He won't have too many more fights in him as he has to take punches in his fights. I'd have to pick him again.

I think clarke can take a lot from the 1st fight and improve his overall game and maybe has wardleys number next time .
Wardley will need better stamina if he is gonna get it .
But I can see clarke boxing a bit more intelligently and taking it on pts .

i did think wardley edged first fight by a point, but surprised poll is so one sided. clarke had long spells of looking much more composed and in control of himself. woulda won without the questionable deduction. wardley gassed early and his body language was poor. but he kept bringing it back with those bursts and hurt clark easier than clark could hurt him

I'm still with Wardley.
If he didn't gas, he would have put in a few more attacks and won rounds clearer.
So all he needs to do is pace himself, work on his cardio in the gym, and he's got this.

Clarke was disappointing to me, I had high expectations before the fight that he would become the next Joe Joyce type contender. Now I think he may have already found his pro level. Maybe he can work on things.

One punch can change everything in the big boys division obviously, but I just see it playing out a bit wider for Fabio.

I favour Clarke strongly in the rematch.

Wardley looked nearly out at times and very weary in the first fight. He showed incredible heart and guts and mental toughness to stay competitive for the full 12, particularly as he looked exhausted at times. Bad cut to overcome too.

First fight was class but it can’t have been good for their health.

Purse bids will determine who lands the Fabio Wardley-Frazer Clarke rematch

The news that the British Boxing Board of Control have elected to put a rematch between British heavyweight champion, Fabio Wardley, and Frazer Clarke out to purse bids was the standout news from the governing body’s latest championship circular.

In March, Wardley and Clarke boxed to an exciting split draw at the O2 Arena in London. Both fighters poured their souls into the brutal, exhausting battle. Wardley, 17-0-1 (16 KOs), dropped Clarke, 8-0-1 (6 KOs), in the fifth round but was forced to dig deep and fight through a damaged nose as Olympic bronze medallist Clarke rose to the occasion in his toughest test as a professional.

A rematch is the ideal next step for both fighters for a number of reasons. Firstly – unless either fighter is presented with a lucrative offer from Saudi Arabia – a rematch will be the most lucrative, high profile option available and although the first fight was a thrilling affair, it did highlight holes in each man’s game which will need to be filled before they begin mixing with the division’s top operators. Going over old ground will allow both men to work on their weaknesses during training and then put their improvements into practice against familiar, quality opposition.

The winner will be ideally prepared and perfectly placed for a major fight early in 2025.

I actually think this fight is too big for the AJ vs Dubois undercard, although it would be great to see it.

Both boxers needs to ensure that they get a very large wedge for this, they deserve it.

Shalom is saying it’s a PPV headliner and sells out anywhere in the country. I can’t see it myself. Might do 100k buys but neither have crossed over to the casual market and it’s for a British title.
