That fight was actually signed and was going to be the co-feature to Broner-Escobedo fight at Cincinnati, on HBO.
Thurman was more of an unknown at that point. A prospect with a question mark, who was going to take a huge leap in opposition at that point. Looked a little raw around the edges, but the potential was already seen there...
Maidana was coming off a loss to Devon Alexander and was going to have his first fight under Robert Garcia, against Thurman.
The fight never happened, as Maidana withdrew. Him and Robert Garcia wanted more time to get used to each other. Plus, Maidana's management stated that "they don't consider Thurman a tune-up".
Thurman fought Orlando Lora as a replacement foe.
But who would've won had Maidana-Thurman happened on July 21st, 2012?

I think Maidana could've taken him. Would've been a close fight, but I think Maidana could've outwilled him.
