June 16, 1983: Duran is King Again!

Post by elmersalsa »

Almost three years of the No Mas fiasco against the great Sugar Ray Leonard, Roberto Duran, The Hands of Stone, is back on his throne with 8th round demolition against champion Davey Moore for the WBA World Jr Middleweight Title.

Duran becomes the 8th man to win 3 world titles in 3 different weight classes after the likes of Bob Fitzsimmons, Tony Canzoneri, Barney Ross, Henry Armstrong, Emile Griffith, Wilfred Benitez and Alexis Arguello did it before him.

Duran turned 32 that night of June 16, 1983 and in front of 16,000 delirious fans in attendance and 19 former and present world champions witnessed Duran's performance. Including Sugar Ray Leonard.

After the brutal beating, the fans started chanting Duran! Duran!Duran! Duran! Duran! It was like old times in the Madison Square Garden when he won his first world title in 1972 against Ken Buchanan.

Duran, with redemption, and tears in his eyes commanded the chant.

An unforgettable night of an unforgettable decade.

Hard figth to watch after the 5th. Duran chops him up.

Redemption. He could throw off the depression and be a hero again.
