Sorry, haven't a clue. Just wanted to say that he was a fighter I always looked out for - talk about explosive (one way or the other). His last nine fights (in which he went 6-3) lasted a combined total of 17 rounds!

Hope he's doing well. :TU:

I heard he beat up a cabbie for likening him to a milkman, saying that he only did one round.

I remember him! Came into boxing quite late if im correct, explosive power, poor defense. Knocked the daylights out of Ross Hale in an explosive 2 mins.

Oscar Palomino... was that the fight where that lad absoultely had Scrap Iron Ryan out and the ref - John Coyle, I think - gave Ryan a massive benefit of the doubt and arguably should have stopped the fight. Then rounds later Ryan gets back into the fight unleashes a flurry and backs his man up onto the ropes and by christ the Ref has suddenly gone all cautious and stops the fights.

Great fight but I remember thinking that Palomino wasnt even in 25% of the trouble Ryan had been in, yet the ref jumped in. Total home town decision.

Not like John Coyle that, he was an excellent referee.

Although I agree that John Coyle was one of our best refs.

I think that generally there is a tendency, especially when our fighters are fighting lower-profile foreigners, to give our fighters more of a chance to turn things round.

Two fights come to mind, remember Gray Lockett against Yuri Tsarenko, jesus the pounding the fellow gave Lockett not to mention Lockett's hurrendous swelling - I have no doubt that in the same situation the foreigner would have been stopped. Lockett however was allowed to fight to the end.

Also Bobby Vanzie v Yuri Romanov, that little Yuri fellow punched holes in Vanzie, busted him up from the very first round knocking Vanzie down five times and the ref stops it in the 8th, four rounds too late.

John Coyle is definitely a class referee. I'm sure I remember seeing him ref a fight in Japan in the 70's (wish I could remember what fight it was).

I agree with liamlion: though I don't remember John Coyle being the third man in those fights, I remember how brutal they were. Another one you could add would be Alex Arthur against Michael Gomez. Could have stopped that one after the second knockdown probably.

He's not the only one though: Ian John Lewis probably let Craig Docherty go on too long with that horrible cut, but then again, British fighters seem to be really bad for cuts so there is a tendencey to give them some leeway.

The thing that's been bugging me since Friday Shite Night started up is how they have the opponent in the ring for about half an hour before Local Hero makes his entrance. It's so obvious they're trying to give him the jitters - or at least make him cold. :TU:

Ryan's one-round annihilation is still fresh in my memory in what was a real grudge match.

Scrap Iron was the classic "hit or be hit type". It was quite sad the way he went out against Andy Holligan. I seem to recall him taking a knee after being nailed by a left hook, only for him to misjudge the referee's count and be counted out on the act of rising. Ryan didnt seem overly hurt, but with his dodgy whiskers it was probably only a matter of time.

I enjoyed his ring entrance, with the flat cap and 'any old iron' song.

I remember the late great Harry Mullan saying that Jon Thaxton would probably catch Ryan with a left hook and knock him out - which is exactly what happened. Seen as a bit of an upset at the time I think...

Yes, there's no doubt about that. I remember going to see Steve Roberts. The previous contest one of the fighters had bled like a stuck pig, but was allowed to continue to win. The next contest, Roberts was having murders with William Gare I think it was, and he got a nothing cut and was stopped immediately. I think that was John Coyle too.

It happens all the time. I don't think there's anything explicit going on, I think referees often feel subconsciously obliged to favour the fighters associated with the house promoter.

you cannot call someone a good ref when they show blatant favouritism to the home fighter.... thats bollocks

all the examples above are good ones...

then you had Hatton V Thaxton and Thaxton V Rowlands.... Hattons face hanging off for 11 and 1/2 rounds.... no ways they would dare stop Ricky..... Thaxton on the verge of knocking Rowlands out cut on the forehead, no way it would cause any permanent damage (unlike Rickys eye) and the ref stops it...

My friend Tomas Da Silva fighting Steve Bendall on the BBC, behind on points but holding his own, penultimate round as Da Silva is pushing Bendall on to the back foot, Billy Airds stops the fight...... STUPID refereeing

just two quick examples of the refs getting wrong again and again.... refs should be impartial end of story

I think it all comes back to the fact that it is the promoters who pay for the referees and the judges for the night. That is correct isn't it. I know the judges are paid out of the promoters pot.

I'm not suggesting inherent corruption, I am saying that if you are a referee or judge, and your wages are being paid by the promoter, you are going to subliminaly going to be coerced into favouring that promoters fighter.

if the board had any balls or spine then it wouldnt happen.....

surely the board appoint the refs, so the ref shouldnt be obliged to kiss the promoters ass in order to keep his job for future shows....

certainly the promoter shouldnt be able to request a ref, as Frank does with Vann.....

Yes the board may appoint them, but they don't pay them, that's the problem (if I am not mistaken that is how it works), and unless the boxing boards actually have the money, it will stay that way.

It's common knowledge that promoters do have sway over the appointment of referees and judges, and it's a global problem. Funnily enough, America seems to have more stringent control over this in some respects, especially in the big boxing states like Nevada.

In Europe the problem appears more rife, and there's been quite major scandals uncovered with regard to the likes of Sauerland. I won't bore everyone with my thoughts on Reid v Ottke again.

Can you imagine the uproar we would have if Manchester United paid the referee and the linesmen when they played at home? Or if Tim Henman paid the umpire and line judges when at wimbledon.

It's a ridiculous situation, which is always going to lead people to cry foul even when there is nothing sinister involved.

Judges are paid by the promoter.

I know a british promoter that treats the judges of a top alphabet soup firm to sightseeing trips, meals, drinks etc.

Not a bribe, but it is stretching the word hospitality a bit too far.

It's no different to what happens elsewhere. When Reid fought Ottke, Brian Hughes told me he saw Ottke, Saurland and Ottke's people sitting having dinner with the IBF official Montello, the judges and referee tillreman in the hotel restaurant.

Sauerland treated Benedetto Montello of the IBF to a 2 week holiday in a villa in spain, with 15 of his family in tow!! Montello gave Sauerland's wife a gold watch as a thankyou...impartial or what?

The problem is, there is nothing illegal or outside of regulations regarding this, as it appears there are no regulations governing accepting gifts or hospitality.

Any promoter worth his salt is going to try and get every advantage for his fighters they can, so you cannot blame the promoters. Rather blame the judges and refs (and I'm certain it's not all of them) who accept such inducements.

The ref is paid by the promoter. The ref needs work, The ref makes sure that the promoter thinks he does a "good" job

A "good' job in this instance is to favour the house and the house fighters but not so blatantly as to be obvious and piss off the punters.

One of the worst house performances I have seen recently was during the first Farnell/Groenweld(sp?) fight. About 50% of Farnell's activity was aimed at G's crown jewels and barely a word was spoken. When G threw one back the ref ,Mickey Vann I think, was over him like white on rice.

Wonder what the decision would have been if it had been the ref's call not the judges? mmmm?

when you have such a limited number of employment opportunities as a boxing ref, it is not surprising that people have to put in the "appropriate" performance

Worst house performance has to be Hatton not getting stopped against Thaxton. That cut was attrocious.
