Callum Simpson to challenge Zak Chelli for British and Commonwealth titles at Barnsley's Oakwell stadium live on Sky Sports

Zak Chelli will defend his British and Commonwealth super-middleweight titles against Callum Simpson on August 3 at the Oakwell Stadium in Barnsley live on Sky Sports.

Chelli is putting his titles on the line in his opponent's hometown against mandatory challenger Simpson.

It will be Chelli's first defence of the belts he won in his unanimous points victory over Jack Cullen at the M&S Bank Arena in Liverpool in January.

The Fulham fighter will be looking to solidify his position at the top of a highly-competitive domestic division when he makes the long journey north to South Yorkshire where he will take on the unbeaten Simpson.

Simpson, 27, has earned his shot at Chelli's belts with a series of impressive performances, most recently scoring a fourth-round knockout win over Tanzania's Dulla Mbabe at The O2 arena in March to remain on course for his mandatory challenge.

Simpson is predicting another knockout performance when he challenges for British and Commonwealth glory in front of his fans at Oakwell Stadium, the home of his beloved Barnsley FC.

"It's a dream come true to fight in front of my home fans in Barnsley," he said.

"I'm going to win the British and Commonwealth titles in style. Expect a knockout. This is the fight I've been asking for. It's a chance to prove myself and make my hometown proud.

"I need everyone in Barnsley and beyond to get behind me and really make Oakwell a fortress."

But Chelli warned: "Winning the British and Commonwealth titles was the culmination of years of hard work and sacrifice. This is just the beginning for me.

"Simpson is too scared to challenge me for my titles in London so I'll show him what a real fighter is and fight him on his home turf.

"On August 3 my hand will be raised and the belts will remain round my waist."

BOXXER founder and CEO Ben Shalom said: “We’re delighted to be working with Barnsley FC to bring an unmissable night of championship boxing to Oakwell Stadium on Saturday, August 3 with British and Commonwealth champion Zak Chelli defending his belts against local star Callum Simpson.

"From winning the Ultimate BOXXER tournament to claiming impressive wins over Germaine Brown, Anthony Sims Jr and Jack Cullen, Zak Chelli has proven himself as a top operator and will be coming to Barnsley full of confidence.

"Callum Simpson is the latest star to emerge from Yorkshire, which has a rich history of producing boxing champions. He will have the backing of the Barnsley faithful as he fights at his home stadium. Expect fireworks as the two fighters go toe-to-toe at Oakwell.”

The stadium will be set for a capacity of 7,000.

The club's chief executive Jon Flatman said: "Barnsley FC are proud to host Callum Simpson and fulfil his lifelong ambition to fight at Oakwell.

"The stadium has to always be at the centre of what the community wants and needs. We know the people in this town want to see Callum claim the British title at this iconic venue.

"We are excited to see the people of Barnsley turn out in force.

"Callum has the full support of the club behind him and we know this fight will put the town, the club and the people of Barnsley firmly on the map.

"We are a place of possibilities and we want everyone to have the opportunity to fulfil their dreams."

Limited tickets: How to get them
The event will have a strictly limited seating capacity with only 7,000 East Stand seats available.

Tickets, which are priced from £30, are expected to sell out fast. Barnsley season ticket holders will get priority access from noon on Tuesday June 18 before a BOXXER exclusive pre-sale from noon on Wednesday June 19. The general sale will begin at noon on Thursday June 20.

CHELLI VS. SIMPSON BRITISH TITLE BOUT ALREADY SOLD OUT

Boxxer announced that a show headlined by Zak Chelli vs. Callum Simpson on Saturday, August 3rd at Oakwell Stadium in Barnsle, England, is already sold out. Simpson, a local product, challenges Chelli for the British and Commonwealth super middleweight titles. All the action will also be available to watch live and exclusively on Sky Sports in the UK and Ireland and Peacock in the USA. Chelli is 15-2-1 and will be making the first defense of the British title, which he won in January against Jack Cullen. Simpson is unbeaten in fourteen pro fights, but largely untested.

Boxxer's founder and CEO Ben Shalom said: “The response to this event has been incredible. The sold out East Stand will be rocking as local lad Callum Simpson takes on defending champion Zak Chelli. This shows that Barnsley really do get behind their own. Fans and fighters can expect a red hot atmosphere inside Oakwell on Saturday, August 3rd.”

Barnsley F.C. Chief Executive Jon Flatman said: “We knew that the community would get behind Callum and the ticket sales show that this has certainly been the case. We would encourage anyone wanting to come along on 3 August to join the waiting list and I’d personally like to thank all those who have already purchased for their incredible support.”

Callum Simpson driving groundswell of support for fight with Zak Chelli

Callum Simpson will be the focus of the type of event that established, top-level operators spend years building towards when he faces British and Commonwealth super middleweight champion Zak Chelli on Aug. 3 at Oakwell in Barnsley, England.

Such has been the rise of the 27-year-old Simpson (14-0, 10 KOs) that it’s easy to forget he will be the challenger on the night.

If the decision makers at Boxxer and Sky Sports didn’t immediately realize what they were getting into when they decided to take the fight to Simpson’s hometown, their first clue came when the 1,500 capacity Metrodome was instantly dismissed as being too small for the event.

Their second clue came when Simpson’s team insisted on taking the fight to Oakwell Stadium, home of the town’s Barnsley Football Club.

It is a massive show of faith to build such an event around a relatively inexperienced fighter such as Simpson, but if the powers that be were waiting nervously for the first indications about how well ticket sales were going, they needn’t have worried.

Chelli (15-2-1, 7 KOs) and Simpson will fight in front of the East Stand of the famous old stadium, where 7,000 fans will be in attendance. That isn’t an estimated figure or promotional hoopla – already, there isn’t a spare ticket to be found anywhere in South Yorkshire.

“We knew. They’re saying it sold out in three days, but that’s not quite right,” Simpson’s manager, Kevin Maree, told BS. “The first day was season ticket holders, the second day was priority and the third was general sale. If they’d put that show out on general sale from the start, it would have been sold out in an hour. Even on the day when tickets were only available to season ticket holders, they were getting inundated with calls from people desperate to get tickets.

“We were down at the ground on the day it was launched doing a photoshoot with Chelli. The football club were telling us that it was madness and wondering what the hell was going on.

“We told Sky that we didn’t think they understood what his fanbase is like. We’ve been down to London twice and told them that as much as we love being on the shows, we couldn’t come to London again. It started to snowball then. They were wondering if it was too soon for the football club. No.”

These days, it seems like almost every promising boxer talks about headlining an event at the home of their favorite football club. Some – like Tony Bellew and Chris Billam-Smith – are genuine fans who were handed over the turnstiles as children and can reel off lists of obscure former players. For others, the idea is clearly a more opportunistic venture.

Maree signed Simpson in the summer of 2021 and quickly began describing him as the future of boxing. Unearthing a talented fighter to maneuver through the rankings is one thing; realizing that that fighter has a large fanatical support who will follow him in droves and eventually provide him with leverage in negotiations is quite another.

“He’s not a gimmick. A lot of lads these days go to their local football club and ask if they can walk out onto the pitch and say that they’ve been a fan of the club for years. You can smell a rat straight away,” Maree said. “Callum’s grandad was a season ticket holder. His dad’s a season ticket holder. Callum’s a season ticket holder and goes to away games. He’s got a board at the ground where they’ve put a photo up of him and written, ‘He’s one of our own’ on it. Everybody knows him. If a lad’s going to try and do it with a football club, it can’t be fake. It has to be real and organic, and Callum’s got that at Barnsley. He’s going to have a Ricky Hatton-type fanbase, I’m telling you.”

Simpson has made great strides since agreeing to a promotional deal with Boxxer and Spy Sports early in 2023. He reeled off four victories during his first year with the promotional outfit, boxing to orders as he racked up invaluable rounds of experience.

Simpson has also become a regular face during live broadcasts and grown increasingly confident in front of the cameras. But away from the lights and attention, he and his trainer, Mark Hurley, have continued to go about their business quietly and diligently.

Maree already believes that Simpson is one of the country’s brightest talents and he is expecting him to prove it against Chelli and announce himself in spectacular fashion.

“He’s incredible,” Maree said. “The amount of people who spar with Callum and then say afterwards that he’s scary-good. He’s gonna get it right on the night one day and people are going to go, ‘Oh my God.’

"I don’t think Mark Hurley gets anywhere near the credit he should be getting for the quality of boxers he’s producing at the moment, with Jasmina Zapotoczna and Callum. Mark is a proper, proper boxing guy. He’s behind the scenes. He’s not a reflective glory seeker. How many photos do you see of Mark? Callum Simpson might not have the belts I believe he’s going to get yet, but he’s still arguably one of the most high-profile boxers in the country. People won’t know who his trainer is.

“Chelli could be in for a rough old night on Aug. 3, because [Callum is] ready to go. We’ve got the camp right. Callum lives the life, and you couldn’t design a better person in terms of how they approach the sport in and out of the ring. On Aug. 3, he’s going to be launched.”

Caroline Dubois will challenge Maira Moneo for WBC interim world title live on Sky Sports on August 3

Caroline Dubois will fight Maira Moneo for the WBC interim lightweight world championship on Saturday August 3, live on Sky Sports; fast-rising star Dubois boxes Moneo on the Zak Chelli vs Callum Simpson bill at the Oakwell Stadium in Barnsley

Caroline Dubois will fight Maira Moneo for the WBC interim world championship on Saturday August 3, live on Sky Sports.

The fast-rising star takes this next step in her career on the Zak Chelli vs Callum Simpson bill at the Oakwell Stadium in Barnsley.

Moneo is the holder of the WBC interim lightweight title so the winner will set herself on a collision course to face Irish boxing legend and WBC lightweight world champion Katie Taylor.

Twenty-three-year-old star 'Sweet' Caroline Dubois has got off to the perfect start in her 9-0 professional career, having already been crowned Youth Olympic, World Youth and four-time European Youth champion as an amateur.

Dubois' unbeaten run in the paid ranks includes a convincing win over Magali Rodriguez to claim the IBO strap in 2023 and a successful defence of the belt against Miranda Reyes in February of this year.

Moneo, known as 'La Panterita', has mixed with top-level opposition. She holds a victory over former two-weight world ruler Erica Anabella Farias and the only blemish on her record is the result of a disqualification in a 2020 bout with Yanina del Carmen Lescano due to a clash of heads.

For Dubois it will also be the first fight of a new deal with Sky Sports and promoter BOXXER.

"I'm very happy to have signed a new deal with BOXXER, Ben Shalom and Sky Sports. For me, it's the biggest platform and I've been impressed with the amount they've invested in me and in female boxing," Dubois said.

"I'm ready to announce myself on the big stage. I want to be world champion. I want to be fighting for world titles against the likes of Rhiannon Dixon, Beatriz Ferreira and Katie Taylor. I want to unify the division. I want to be undisputed and then I want to move up in weight."

She added: "I want to go all the way and to do something that has never been done before. I want to transform the sport of female boxing and to change the way it's viewed to make sure it gets the respect it deserves.

"Moneo is a fight that can propel me to the next level. She's game, she's tough and she believes she's going to win.

"She has a lot of experience. She's had a lot of fights so I don't think she's going to be overawed. She's going to be aggressive and non-stop punching and I'm ready and I'm excited for that."

But Dubois warned: "Every time I step in the ring, I want to do damage. I want to excite people. I want people to say: 'Wow, that Caroline Dubois, she's something special!' I want my name to be in their minds and on their lips. Whether it's a knockout or a 10-round beatdown, I want to be the standout performance of the night, and on August 3, I'm coming to steal the show.

"After this fight, I will be on a collision course with Katie Taylor. I will be the Interim champion, her mandatory and unless she vacates, we're fighting."

Moneo expects to wreck those plans. "I promise, I will be bringing the belts back home to Uruguay and Argentina with me," she said.

"I am looking forward to coming to the UK to fight Caroline Dubois. She is a very good fighter, and deserves my respect, but she has never faced anyone like 'La Panterita'. I will show her why I'm the interim 135 lbs champion."

BOXXER founder and CEO Ben Shalom said: "Caroline Dubois is one of the future faces of world boxing. She is a special talent. We've worked with her from her pro debut and we're delighted that she continues to put her faith in us to guide her career to the highest level.

"At just 23 years of age, she has already achieved so much. On August 3, as part of a huge night of boxing in Barnsley, she steps up to challenge Maira Moneo for the WBC interim world title, which can pave the way for some massive fights including a potential shot at female boxing icon Katie Taylor. It doesn't get any bigger than that. This is an opportunity for Caroline to realise her dream and set up a fight with one of the biggest names in the sport in what can be a real 'passing of the torch' moment."

Don't miss Caroline Dubois on the August 3 Zak Chelli vs Callum Simpson bill live on Sky Sports.

Why have they set the capacity limit so low?

Incredible sales to do 7k so quickly. Ive put somewhere else but the Jack Catterall fight has just not sold at all. Purely reliant on boxer sales and presumably promos to get any crowd in there.

very likely Ruthless. Good sales those aren't they. Will he be on a payment for the fight linked to sales?

As ever with me, anyone know/think what they will get paid?

I think it's brilliant. A lot of Warrington fights at the arena didn't do that and Dalton Smith never has. I'd be surprised if Joyce v Del does.

Chilli was saying that Simpson wouldn't fight him in London.

With the capacity to sell so many tickets the promoter wouldn't have given either fighter any choice!!!!!!

I read somewhere (probably Boxing Scene) that Simpson is a big Barnsley fan, season-ticket holder, family have held season tickets for ages, so don't doubt that helps. It seems to be a genuine thing, not just a parade around the pitch post-title win.

Good to see somebody who can shift tickets in big numbers, it's becoming a struggle to get decent crowds at many arena shows.

The big difference between Simpson and Fisher in regards ticket sales is Fisher has only boxed for one genuine title....an Area title.

If Fisher ever gets to challenge for the British & Commonwealth titles, let's see what the tickets sales are then :maybe:

No disrespect to Chelli, who's consistently taken on tough opposition, but i doubt he'd fill out a small hall show even now as British champion.

There are still tickets available for this. I saw Shalom saying it had sold out but there have been tickets available the whole time. Still doing well though given the size of the fight.

Barnsley’s my team & I'm amazed he sold out so quick.

There’s a few individual tickets for sale. I don’t know if they’re from refunds or just not sold because they’re alone but it pretty much sold out on the first day of general sale.

There was literally one fight announced. That’s it. There were no other ticket sellers or local fighters on the bill when it sold out.

He is a real fan as well. I’ve seen him at plenty of away games over the years.

I think they just asked for a limited capacity with it being the first event at the stadium.

If it’s a success then I’m sure the plan will be a world title fight or at least a big fight with a much bigger capacity next summer but there’s no doubt the demands took everyone by surprise.
