Press Release

For Luis Alberto Lopez, giving everything in the ring against Angelo Leo is what he needs to deal with any style of his opponent.

“Venado” Lopez will make the fourth defense of his featherweight title against former titleholder Angelo Leo on Aug. 10 at Tingley Coliseum in Leo’s hometown of Albuquerque, New Mexico.

According to Lopez, he is prepared to do anything in the ring to defeat Leo.

“Like all Mexicans, I do my job in the ring, and I like to throw punches,” Lopez said. “I don’t mind getting hit in order to hit. We work to be able to do all of that in the ring. If we have to move around, we’ll do that. If we have to brawl, we can brawl. If the fight ends early, we can end it early. I do my job. I will prepare for that. And I’m happy that people like my work.”

Lopez (30-2, 17 KOs) captured his belt by vanquishing Josh Warrington in his hometown of Leeds, England, in December 2022. He defended the belt by traveling to Belfast, Ireland, less than six months later to defeat hometown hero Michael Conlan via fifth-round stoppage.

Lopez, from Mexicali, Mexico, then earned a unanimous decision over Joet Gonzalez last September before dispatching mandatory challenger Reiya Abe in eight in March.

“We’ve been training hard as we get ready to finish camp. This has been one of my best training camps, and we will finish strong,” Lopez said.

“We know that Angelo Leo is a good fighter who comes forward throwing lots of punches. He doesn't stop in there. So I think we’re going to need a lot of stamina, and we’re going to need to throw a lot of punches. We’re going to be smart but also aggressive. It’s going to be a good fight. It will be a good test for both of us. I don’t plan on letting go of my title. It’s going to be a great clash.”

Leo (24-1, 11 KOs) won a junior featherweight title with a unanimous points win over then-unbeaten Tramaine Williams in August 2020. He lost the title against eventual unified champ Stephen Fulton the following January and has gone 4-0 with two knockouts since.

Meanwhile, Lopez is looking forward to unification if he is able to get past Leo.

“Making the fourth defense of my title is a great achievement for me,” he said. “I never imagined it, but here we are. And we’re looking forward to big challenges because big fights are coming. Perhaps unifications. Maybe Naoya Inoue? Definitely something big.”

In the 10-round junior welterweight co-feature, Lindolfo Delgado (20-0, 15 KOs) and Bryan Flores (26-0-1, 15 KOs) will collide in an all-Mexican showdown.

Leo's pulled off a couple of solid wins since stepping up to feather but Lopez has been in great form, his styles bizarre but makes it work, Leo was game against Fulton but he'll do well to hang with Lopez in the pocket

Glad to see that, Lopez always annoyed me, glad he took the title from Warrington, but his style was just... A bit crap, and glad Leo made him pay, and it's even better as Leo comes across as a great guy

What a knockout

But that ref obviously has a single digit IQ, to keep counting like that. Counts to 10 then nonchalantly points to the stricken fighter, telling the doctor where to find him.

Stunning KO from Leo and thougroughly deserved, I had him a few rounds in front, Lopez had a bit of success with those looping unorthodox hooks but always leaves his chin exposed, throws from low and brings the gloves back low, just surprised he made it to world level and stayed there, Leo was busier, hungrier and was battering the body and landing clean head shots more frequently as the fight went on, he was getting on top of Lopez and was actually bullying him by that 10th but still that KO was incredible, left hook and BANG Lopez was finished

As Guru said above, FOTY in Ortiz/Bohachuk to KO of the year

Leos punches looked hard. Lopez engages a bit too much and his defence is leaky but that's his thing. Leo seems to have his number.

REPORT: LUIS ALBERTO LOPEZ SUFFERED SMALL BRAIN BLEED FOLLOWING LOSS TO ANGELO LEO

Luis Alberto Lopez’s win streak and title reign ended in the worst imaginable way.

ESPN’s Mark Kriegel reported that the dethroned IBF featherweight titlist suffered a small brain bleed after his Aug. 10 knockout defeat to Angelo Leo. Their competitive title fight saw Leo counter a jab with a perfectly timed left hook. Lopez was put flat on his back where he remained until referee Ernie Sharif waved off the contest.

Leo (25-1, 12 knockouts) entered Tingley Coliseum in his Albuquerque hometown as the overwhelming crowd favorite. He left as the newly crowned IBF titlist and The Ring’s No. 2-rated featherweight.

Lopez (30-3, 17 KOs) snapped a thirteen-fight win streak, though it pales in comparison to the far more grim aftermath. The diagnosis prompted the New Mexico Athletic Commission to place the Mexicali native on a 90-day suspension. It will likely be extended along with a red flag next to his Federal ID, given the severity of the injury.

-----------------
Three pro boxers have passed away within this calendar year.

Japan’s Kazuki Anaguchi (6-1, 2 KOs) suffered a subdural hematoma on the right side of his brain in a Dec. 26 defeat to Seiya Tsutsumi in Tokyo. Their Fight of the Year contender came at the ultimate price. Anaguchi’s legs began to twitch as medical attention was paid to a gruesome cut over his left eye. He was taken to a nearby hospital, where doctors performed an immediate craniotomy. The 23-year-old remained in a coma until his untimely death on Feb. 2.

Congo’s Ardi Ndembo died on April 26, three weeks after injuries sustained during an April 5 Team Combat League bout versus Cuba’s Nestor Santana. Just two weeks later, England’s Sharif Lawal was pronounced dead just one day after a knockout loss in his May 11 pro debut. The bout was the first fight of the night, its tragic ending which prompted the cancellation of the rest of the show.

The horrific fate of South Africa’s Simiso Buthelezi was sadly witnessed in real time. The 24-year-old was in control during his June 2022 ten-round lightweight bout versus Siphesihle Mntungwa. He drove his countryman into the ropes, which prompted a break in the action. Buthelezi then oddly followed the referee once action resumed and began punching at the air. The contest was brought to an immediate halt.

Buthelezi was brought to a local hospital, and was diagnosed with a brain bleed. He passed away just two days later on June 7, 2022.

Lopez won the IBF featherweight title in a Dec. 2022 points win over Josh Warrington on the road in Leeds, England. Three of his five title fights came in his opponent’s hometown. In addition to Warrington and Leo, Lopez met Michael Conlan in his backyard of Belfast, Northern Ireland. It mattered little in the end, as Lopez delivered a highlight reel fifth-round knockout in his first title defense.

Wins over Joet Gonzalez and Reiya Abe followed before his scary defeat to Leo—even more frightening, in retrospect.

The Ring joins the rest of the boxing community in wishing Lopez a timely recovery all the way back to good health.
