WBO orders rematch between Rafael Espinoza and Robeisy Ramirez

The WBO has called for a sequel between its featherweight titleholder, Rafael Espinoza, and the man he bested last year to win the belt, Robeisy Ramirez.

According to the sanctioning body’s Sept. 4 letter, both camps have been allotted 15 days for negotiations. If terms are not agreed upon within this period, the WBO will proceed with a purse bid. Either party can also request a purse bid at any time during negotiations. The minimum bid for the fight is set at $150,000.

Espinoza (25-0, 21 KOs) secured the title with an upset victory over Ramirez (14-2, 9 KOs) in their December 2023 bout in Florida. The 30-year-old Espinoza hit the canvas in the fifth round, while Ramirez, also 30, was knocked down in the 12th and final round. Espinoza won by majority decision to claim his first title in what was one of the standout fights of 2023.

Both fighters have since returned. On June 21 in Las Vegas, Espinoza made his first title defense by stopping Sergio Chirino in four rounds, knocking him down in the first, third and fourth rounds. Eight days later, Ramirez halted Brandon Leon Benitez in the seventh round on the undercard of Teofimo Lopez vs. Steve Claggett in Florida.

Rafael Espinoza and Robeisy Ramirez agree to fight

The Rafael Espinoza-Robeisy Ramirez WBO featherweight title rematch will not go to a purse bid tomorrow, as Top Rank reached an agreement with both fighters before the deadline, per reporting from Lance Pugmire of Boxing Scene.

Espinoza and Ramirez will be the co-main event on the Dec. 7 Top Rank card in Arizona, headlined by the rematch between Emanuel Navarrete and Oscar Valdez.

Their first bout in December was considered one of the best of the year, with both fighters hitting the canvas. Espinoza (25-0, 21 KOs) of Mexico earned a narrow majority-decision win, dropping two-time Cuban Olympic gold medalist Ramirez (14-2, 9 KOs) in the 12th round to capture his first world title. Ramirez had previously floored Espinoza in the fifth round. Espinoza was a +800 underdog going into the fight.

Espinoza, 30, has fought once in 2024, scoring a fourth-round technical knockout over Sergio Chirino in June at the newly opened Fontainebleau Las Vegas, dropping him three times.

Ramirez, also 30, secured a seventh-round technical knockout over Brandon Benitez in his lone 2024 fight at the James L. Knight Center in Miami Beach, Florida.

Emanuel Navarrete-Oscar Valdez, Rafael Espinoza-Robeisy Ramirez in doubleheader

Three-division champion and WBO junior lightweight ruler Emanuel Navarrete will run it back with old foe Oscar Valdez on a card that will feature another premier rematch, between Rafael Espinoza and Robeisy Ramirez, Top Rank announced today.

The event will take place at Footprint Center in Phoenix on December 7.

Espinoza will be defending the WBO featherweight title against the man he claimed it from last December, while Navarrete, who won a wide decision over Valdez in August last year, will make his first fight since a May loss to Denys Berinchyk.

Navarrete, 38-2-1 (31 KOs), a 2008 and 2012 Olympian, claimed his first world title in 2018 with a victory over Isaac Dogboe.

“The fans will see the same 'Vaquero,' as always,” said Navarrete. “We’re working hard to regain the aggressiveness that defines me and give all the fans the intense fight they want to see on December 7. I still have a lot to do and big goals to accomplish in boxing, including unifying my title and possibly moving back up to 135 pounds."

Valdez, a 33-year-old from Sonora, Mexico, is 32-2 (24 KOs) and said he was “thrilled” to have the opportunity to face Navarrete once more.

“Although we lost the first fight, we stayed disciplined and focused on returning stronger,” Valdez said. “I know it’s a tough challenge – but not impossible. With that in mind, we returned to the gym and studied what we did wrong in the first fight to avoid making the same mistakes. I’m excited and confident that we will be victorious this time."

Espinoza is 25-0 (21 KOs). He climbed off the floor from a fifth-round knockdown to put Ramirez, a Cuban southpaw, on the canvas during a crucial 12th round to win by majority decision in what ESPN deemed the Upset of the Year.

From Guadalajara, Mexico, Espinoza made his first title defense in June when defeating countryman Sergio Chirino Sanchez in four rounds.

“I know the fans, just like me, have been looking forward to this fight. It’s a fight that I wanted,” Espinoza said. “I’m very motivated and happy, and I’m training at 100 per cent. This night of rematches will be great for Mexico, and I’m ready to give it my all, just like I always do.

“Our first fight was extremely close, action-packed and regarded by many as Fight of the Year. Since the cards were read, my team and I have been asking for the rematch.”

The undercard will feature Mexico's junior welterweight contender Lindolfo Delgado (21-0, 15 KOs) in a 10-rounder against Jackson Marinez (22-3, 10 KOs).

Emiliano Fernando Vargas (12-0, 10 KOs) will be aiming for his fifth win of the year in an eight-rounder at junior welterweight against Alan Ayala (11-4, 7 KOs), and Olympic silver medalist Richard Torrez Jnr (11-0, 10 KOs) will return in an eight-round heavyweight fight.

“December 7 is going to be a special night in Phoenix, as we have two 50-50 rematches of incredible fights,” said Top Rank’s Bob Arum. “Navarrete and Valdez are two of the greatest Mexican warriors the sport has seen, and I expect another toe-to-toe battle. I thought the first Espinoza-Ramirez fight was the 2023 Fight of the Year, and I expect the 13th round to pick up where the dramatic 12th left off.”

ramirez-espinoza was a great fight, looking forward to that one

but why is there this idea that valdez-nava was some type of war? it was an uneventful fight easily won by nava, not interested in a rematch tbh

Giovani Santillan-Frederick Lawson added to Emanuel Navarrete-Oscar Valdez undercard

Welterweights Giovani Santillan and Frederick Lawson will square off in a 10-round fight on December 7 at the Footprint Center in Phoenix, a bout that was added to the undercard of Emanuel Navarrete’s junior lightweight title defense against Oscar Valdez.

Additionally, three more fighters on the verge of breakouts – Richard Torrez Jnr, Albert Gonzalez and Steven Navarro – have been added to the Navarrete-Valdez undercard, which will stream live on ESPN+.

Santillan, 32-1 (17 KOs), a 32-year-old southpaw from San Diego, last year had something of a breakthrough, defeating longtime contender Erick Bone in July and knocking out Alexis Rocha in October. Santillan then fought for an interim welterweight title in May, when he was stopped by Brian Norman Jnr. (who was later elevated to full titleholder status).

Lawson, 30-5 (22 KOs), a 35-year-old Chicago resident originally from Accra, Ghana, topped Estevan Villalobos in April 2023 but followed up with losses to Vergil Ortiz Jnr in January and Rocha in March.

Torrez, 11-0 (10 KOs), a promising heavyweight, and Emiliano Fernando Vargas, 12-0 (10 KO), an electric junior welterweight, will fight in separate eight-rounders. Featherweight “Chop Chop” Gonzalez, 11-0 (7 KOs) will take on Argentina’s Gerardo Antonio Perez, 12-6-1 (3 KOs) in another eight-round fight.

Navarro, a 4-0 (3 KOs) junior bantamweight, will fight for the fifth time in 2024 in a six-rounder against Puerto Rico’s Gabriel Bernardi, 7-1 (3 KOs). Welterweight prospect Art Barrera Jnr, 6-0 (4 KOs) also will appear on the card, in a six-round bout against an opponent to be named.

Featherweight titleholder Rafael Espinoza will defend his belt against Robeisy Ramirez in the co-feature to Navarrete-Valdez. Both fights – each of them rematches – will be televised on ESPN (10:30 p.m. ET).

Press Release

Rafael “El Divino” Espinoza and Robeisy “El Tren” Ramirez thrilled fans with a Fight of the Year contender last December, and both look to pick up where their dramatic twelfth round left off on December 7th when they have a rematch at Phoenix’s Footprint Center. Espinoza (25-0, 21 KOs) edged Ramirez via majority decision to capture the WBO featherweight world title. From the time ring announcer Mark Shunock said “and new,” a rematch appeared inevitable. However, both men returned in June with different dance partners. Espinoza dispatched Sergio Chirino in just four rounds in his first title defense, while Ramirez (28-4 including pro bouts in the World Series of Boxing) returned one week later to blast out Brandon Benitez with a dazzling uppercut in the seventh round.

Espinoza, a 6-foot-1 Mexican phenom, wants to prove that his first victory was no fluke. Ramirez, a two-time Cuban Olympic gold medalist, is determined to reclaim his throne after personal struggles impacted his performance in their initial encounter. Espinoza trained at home in Guadalajara, while Ramirez held camp in Las Vegas. This is what they had to say ahead of Part II.

Rafael Espinoza

“I know it will be a war. And it’ll help that I can fight against any version of Ramirez. I'll be ready whether he wants to fight at a close range or from a distance. Like I said before the first fight, I’m not leaving without the title.”

“I’m preparing for the best version of Ramirez because I know that’s who I’ll face on fight night. And that’s exactly what I want. I want him at his best so there won’t be doubts or excuses when I win.”

“My confidence has grown. My mentality, approach to training, and commitment have all changed. I’m three times more committed than in the first fight, and I think I showed that against Chirino. I want to prove it again against Ramirez.”

“I know I have to stay completely focused in this fight. I made a mistake the first time, and it cost me. So, we’re focusing on being 100 percent concentrated because losing focus is easy when you get comfortable in the ring. I can’t afford to lose focus for even a second. That will be a key difference in this fight.”

“My top priority is to defeat Ramirez on December 7th. After that, we’ll see who I can unify with. For now, my sole focus is beating Ramirez.”

Robeisy Ramirez

“In camp, my father got really sick. He almost passed away. That affected me a lot. My father is in Cuba, and I can’t go back. I couldn’t visit him in the hospital. So, that affected me greatly.”

“That was not the best version of me in the first fight. And despite that, I was still able to deliver a great show. So, I do not doubt the second fight will be better.”

“He didn’t surprise me in the first fight. We all know how Mexican fighters are. They never give up. But, given my personal issues, I was not in the best condition. Nevertheless, if the judges saw that he deserved the decision, that’s fine.”

“I have characterized myself as a fighter who gets up whenever he is knocked down. I have a champion mentality and will be a champion again.”

"Everyone knows that I am a warrior. And I have the Cuban school of boxing. But as the Mexicans say, I also have the huevos to stand in the center of the ring and go to war.”

“A victory would put me where I belong. We have to see how this fight will unfold, but unification showdowns and fights against the best of the division are always on the table.”

The Emanuel Navarrete-Oscar Valdez II junior lightweight world title showdown and Espinoza-Ramirez co-feature will be broadcast live on ESPN, ESPN Deportes, and ESPN+ at 10:30 p.m. ET/7:30 p.m. PT. Sky Sports will have coverage in the U.K. and Ireland.

Ramirez will no doubt be getting the quit job label, not the first Cuban to be accused of lacking heart at the top level but he had to do what he thought was best for his health, doubt that will cut it with the critics though, he started off well Ramirez, worked the left hand to the body well, Espinoza stalked and tried to pressure but I thought Ramirez's movement was good, Espinoza looked like he was getting closer in the 5th then next round seconds in Espinoza lands a hard right to the eye of Ramirez and he turns and quits, you seen the swelling afterwards but still bizarre, came out of nowhere

It is good that a boxer thinks o his health first, before it is too late. According to Robeisy Ramirez, his injury to the right eye is due to a couple elbow blows by Espinoza. Some of the replays show a couple contacts between the elbow of Espinoza and the face of Ramirez, but it is hard to conclude if it is unfortunate or deliberate. I didn't see there a case for a no contest after revision (but I am not an expert), and if the result is not changed, it can clearly be a bad turn for Ramirez career, because it would mean th einjry is due to the blow that landed on him.
