Golden Boy and Riyadh Season reportedly planning November show headlined by Gilberto Ramirez vs Chris Billam-Smith

Jose Ramirez vs Arnold Barboza Jr, William Zepeda vs George Kambosos Jr, and Bektemir Melikuziev vs Lester Martin are on the docket as well

ESPN’s Salvador Rodriguez brings word that Golden Boy Promotions and Riyadh Season are gearing up for a November show in Saudi Arabia headlined by a cruiserweight unification between Gilberto “Zurdo” Ramirez and Chris Billam-Smith.

After outgrowing 168 and getting chased out of 175 by Dmitry Bivol, Ramirez (46-1, 30 KO) kicked off his cruiserweight campaign by dominating Joe Smith Jr. That win set up a title shot against the skilled-but-inactive Arsen Goulamirian, whom Ramirez figured out and overpowered down the stretch to claim WBA gold.

Billam-Smith (20-1, 13 KO) scored a truly bizarre upset of Lawrence Okolie for the WBO belt last year, and after surviving a walloping from Mateusz Masternak to force an injury stoppage, he avenged his lone career defeat in June with a grinding decision over Richard Riakporhe.

Per Rodriguez, the rest of the lineup includes:

Jose Ramirez’s and Arnold Barboza Jr’s long-overdue super lightweight grudge match.
William Zepeda prepping for next year’s planned crack at Shakur Stevenson against George Kambosos Jr. Sorry, John.
Oscar Duarte welcoming Kenneth Sims Jr back to 140.
A potentially explosive super middleweight showdown between longtime prospect Bektemir Melikuziev and breakout Guatemalan standout Lester Martinez.
Very strong lineup if they can put everything together. Hoping we get confirmation soon.

Gilberto 'Zurdo' Ramirez to fight Chris Billam-Smith on Nov. 16

Mexico's Gilberto "Zurdo" Ramirez and England's Chris Billam-Smith will meet in a cruiserweight title unification Nov. 16 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, it was announced Tuesday.

The matchup will headline a five-fight Riyadh Season "Latino Night" card promoted by Oscar De La Hoya's Golden Boy. Turki Alalshikh, the chairman of Saudi Arabia's General Entertainment Authority, said the event will be broadcast globally for free, though no details were revealed.

"This card features some of the best Latino fighters around and continues our drive to deliver top-tier boxing events by giving fans throughout the world the fights they want to see," Alalshikh said.

The previously reported Jose Ramirez-Arnold Barboza junior welterweight fight -- slated for Sept. 28 in Las Vegas -- will serve as the co-feature in a battle of Mexican Americans. Mexico's William Zepeda, a top lightweight contender, will prepare for a planned February title fight against Shakur Stevenson with a bout against former champion Tevin Farmer.

Puerto Rico's Oscar Collazo will defend his WBO strawweight title against Mexico's Edwin Hernandez, and Mexico's Oscar Duarte will meet Chicago's Kenny Sims in a 140-pound bout.

Ramirez (46-1, 30 KOs) won the WBA title at 200 pounds with a decision over Arsen Goulamirian in March. The 33-year-old former 168-pound champion is rated No. 5 by ESPN at cruiserweight.

The 34-year-old Billam-Smith (20-1, 13 KOs) will make the third defense of the title he won from Lawrence Okolie in May 2023. Billam-Smith -- ESPN's No. 2 cruiserweight -- is coming off a June decision over Richard Riakporhe.

Chris Billam-Smith vs. Gilberto Ramirez, Jose Ramirez-Arnold Barboza and William Zepeda-Tevin Farmer official for Nov. 16 in Riyadh

The cruiserweight unification bout featuring Chris Billam-Smith vs. Gilberto Ramirez is officially set for Nov. 16 in Riyadh, part of a show that will also feature a clash between junior welterweights Jose Ramirez and Arnold Barboza, and a bout between lightweight contender William Zepeda and Tevin Farmer.

The show, spoken of in recent weeks, was confirmed in a press release posted by Turki Alalshikh, whose Riyadh Season has been financing various boxing events.

According to the press release, the show “will be broadcast for free globally,” with more details to be announced later.

Billam-Smith (20-1, 13 KOs) holds the WBO world title. The 34-year-old from Bournemouth, England, defeated Lawrence Okolie in May 2023 for the WBO belt. He has since made two defenses, stopping Mateusz Masternak in December and then avenging his lone loss – via split decision to Richard Riakporhe in 2019 – with a unanimous decision over Riakporhe this past June.

Billam-Smith has complimented Ramirez in recent interviews.

Ramirez (46-1, 30 KOs) started his career as a middleweight and then won a world title at super middleweight, topping Arthur Abraham in 2016. He later moved up to light heavyweight, fighting there from April 2019 until November 2022, when he challenged Dmitry Bivol for a world title and lost a wide decision. Ramirez moved up to cruiserweight a year ago, outpointing Joe Smith Jr. last October and then unseating Arsen Goulamirian this April for the WBA belt.

While the main event is co-promoted by Golden Boy Promotions and BOXXER, the four undercard fights that have been announced, including a strawweight title bout, largely feature boxers from Golden Boy’s roster.

Those fights are Jose Ramirez vs. Barboza, Zepeda vs. Farmer, Oscar Collazo vs. Edwin Hernandez and Oscar Duarte vs. Kenneth Sims.

Barboza (30-0, 11 KOs) is a junior welterweight contender whose recent outings brought a unanimous decision over Jose Pedraza, an eighth-round TKO of Xolisani Ndongeni and a split decision over Sean McComb.

Jose Ramirez (29-1, 18 KOs) was a unified titleholder who fell short while challenging Josh Taylor for the undisputed championship, losing a close unanimous decision in 2021. Since then he has won a decision over Pedraza, scored an 11th-round knockout over Richard Commey and taken a unanimous decision over Rances Barthelemy.

Barboza vs. Ramirez is an elimination bout that will establish the winner as the mandatory challenger for the WBO title currently held by Teofimo Lopez.

Zepeda (31-0, 27 KOs) is a lightweight contender on the verge of a title shot. Among his recent knockout victims were Mercito Gesta, Maxi Hughes and Giovanni Cabrera.

Farmer (33-6-1, 8 KOs) held a junior lightweight world title from 2018-2020, when he was unseated by Joseph Diaz Jr. Farmer moved up to lightweight and notched three straight wins, then lost to unbeaten Raymond Muratalla in July.

Collazo (10-0, 7 KOs) stopped Melvin Jerusalem in May 2023 for the WBO world title at 105 pounds and has since made three successful defenses, notching technical knockouts over Garen Diagan and Reyneris Gutierrez, then outpointing Gerado Zapata in June.

His challenger, Hernandez, is 13-2-1 (4 KOs). Hernandez was knocked out in three rounds by David Jimenez in 2021 in a flyweight fight and later lost a majority decision to German Valenzuela Barreras in 2022 at junior flyweight. He has gone 3-0-1 since, knocking out unbeaten Michael Carmona in four rounds in July.

Duarte (27-2-1, 22 KOs) is a junior welterweight who suffered an eighth-round knockout against Ryan Garcia last December but came back in April with a TKO of the aforementioned JoJo Diaz.

Sims (21-2-1, 8 KOs) has now won eight in a row since a 2018 decision loss to Samuel Teah. Among those Sims has defeated along the way: the previously unbeaten Elvis Rodriguez and 2016 Olympian Batyr Akhmedov.

Oscar Collazo-Knockout CP Freshmart prepared for strawweight unification Nov. 16

Oscar Collazo and Thammanoon Niyomtrong have finalized terms for a strawweight unification bout on Nov. 16, part of the “Latino Night” show in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

WBO titleholder Collazo (10-0, 7 KOs), from Puerto Rico, is ranked as the division’s top fighter, while Thailand’s Niyomtrong (25-0, 9 KOs), also known as Knockout CP Freshmart, boasts the longest active reign of any titleholder, having defended his WBA belt 13 times.

While The Ring title isn't counted among the four major sanctioning belts, it will be contested in the strawweight division for the first time.

The fight, first reported by Jake Donovan at Ring Magazine, materialized after the 27-year-old Collazo was originally slated to face Mexico’s Edwin “Canito” Hernandez. Donovan reported that Golden Boy Promotions pushed for a Ring title bout for its Riyadh Season card, leading to the agreement between Collazo and Niyomtrong. The winner will be obliged to face Hernandez next.

Collazo’s most recent bout took place in June during Boxing Hall of Fame weekend, during which he secured a unanimous decision over Gerardo Zapata, halting his four-fight knockout streak. Niyomtrong, 34, defended his title earlier this year, extending his eight-year reign with a majority decision over Alex Winwood following a two-year layoff.

Gilberto “Zurdo” Ramirez: “I will become the first Mexican cruiserweight unified champion. It’s exciting because my dream will come true this November 16. I’ve been putting everything into training, a lot of work, hard work. Thank you, everyone.”

Chris Billam-Smith: “I’ve been written off many times before. Last time out against Richard Riakporhe. Press Release

On November 16, the Saudi capital Riyadh will host the “Latino Night,” bringing together top names in the world of boxing as part of “Riyadh Season 2024.”

The event, organized by Golden Boy Promotions—one of the leading boxing promotion companies—will take place at “The Venue,” one of the new zones in Riyadh Season. The main event will be co-promoted by Golden Boy Promotions and BOXXER.

During a press conference held this evening in Los Angeles, it was announced that the “Latino Night” will be the first event of Riyadh Season to be broadcast free to boxing fans worldwide. DAZN will stream the major fight night globally for free, with additional broadcasters in the region to be announced soon.

The event is expected to be one of the largest celebrations of Latino talent in the boxing world. It will feature a unification battle between WBA Cruiserweight World Champion Gilberto “Zurdo” Ramirez of Mexico, who continues his pursuit to become the undisputed world champion in the division, and WBO Cruiserweight World Champion Chris Billam-Smith of the UK, who enters the fight after three consecutive successful title defenses.

In the co-main event, former unified champion and U.S. Olympian Jose Ramirez will face dangerous undefeated contender and WBO No. 1 ranked challenger Arnold Barboza Jr. in a 12-round lightweight WBO title eliminator. The card also includes a highly anticipated lightweight bout between Mexico’s William “El Camarón” Zepeda and former IBF World Champion Tevin “2X” Farmer in a 10-round clash.

Additionally, in collaboration with Miguel Cotto Promotions, a world title unification fight in the minimumweight division will be held between historic WBO Champion Oscar “El Pupilo” Collazo from Puerto Rico and the longest-reigning WBO champion in this category, Thammanoon “Knockout CP Freshmart” Niyomtrong, scheduled for 12 rounds.

The night will open with a 12-round WBA super lightweight title eliminator between WBA No. 1 contender Kenneth “Bossman” Sims Jr. from Chicago and Oscar “La Migraña” Duarte.

Gilberto “Zurdo” Ramirez, WBA Cruiserweight Champion said, “I’m really excited to be here, to be a part of the Latino night. I will become the first Mexican cruiserweight unified champion. It’s exciting because my dream will come true this November 16. I’ve been putting everything into training, a lot of work, hard work. Thank you, everyone.”

Chris Billam-Smith, WBO Cruiserweight Champion said, “This opportunity for me is huge. It’s a unification like Ben spoke about. I’ve been written off many times before. Last time out against Richard Riakporhe. I was going into his backyard, his soccer stadium, and it was all about him, and it was his night, and I went and scored the party, and unfortunately for the Latinos, on November 16, I’ll be doing exactly the same again. All respect to Zurdo and see you on Friday night. Thank you.”

Jose Ramirez, U.S. Olympian and Former Unified Super Lightweight World Champion, said, “It’s a great fight. I’m looking forward to it. It’s time for me to make a statement. And this is one of those fights where I’m gonna make a statement and get those belts back. I’m ready for this mentally. I’ve been under the lights, the big lights, and I have the experience, and I have the strength. I think my biggest enemy in the sport of boxing was my inactivity. The last time I fought twice was in 2019 and that’s when I successfully defended my WBC and unified titles, knocking out Hooker. So the goal was to always become undisputed, which I got there. It’s honorable Barbosa saying he’s been chasing the fight since 2019. Now that he stands in the way for me to reclaim my titles it’s time to get that fight on.”

Arnold Barboza Jr., Super Lightweight World Title Contender, said, “You know, it’s a fight that I’ve been wanting since 2019. I respect Jose Ramirez, the fighter. I respect Jose Ramirez, the person. But this is personal. Like I said, I’ve been wanting this fight since 2019 for whatever reason it never happened. I’ve tried every form, you know. I called him out so many times. So that didn’t work out. I want to give credit and thanks to Oscar, he’s a man of his word. When I signed to Golden Boy, he said he was going to give me this fight. Like I said, this fight is personal. You know, I’m coming with everything.”

Oscar De La Hoya, Chairman and CEO of Golden Boy Promotions, commented during the press conference, “When I say this card is stacked, that may be an understatement. We have two championship unification fights culminating with a cruiserweight barnburner between Gilberto Ramirez and Chris Billam-Smith. We have a tremendous fight in the red-hot 140-pound division between former two-time World Champion Jose Ramirez and the undefeated no. 1 contender Arnold Barboza. We have a world champion fighting for the third time in 2024. We have the most exciting fighter in the sport with William Zepeda. We have contenders, prospects and so much more, and you’ll get to hear from many of these fighters today.”

Ben Shalom, founder and CEO of BOXXER, added, “This is about hard work and dedication. Chris Billam-Smith has become a superstar in British boxing from nowhere. At one point around European level, many people counted now. Many people didn’t think he would get to world level. We invested in him. He’s got the best resume now in the whole division. This is Latino night. I’m very excited for it, but believe me, you’ve made a mistake here, Oscar. This is Chris Billam-Smith’s time to pick up another belt. Good luck Zurdo, good luck Oscar and we’re coming.”

Bernard Hopkins, Golden Boy Promotions Partner, said, “To my left you have an opportunity to shine across the world, especially the boxing world on my right, they got a chance to do the same thing. We will become spectators, and we better watch something special. So enjoy this free fight.”

Golden Boy Promotions’ Chief Business Officer, Phillip Button, expressed his excitement about partnering with Riyadh Season, stating: “We are thrilled to work with Riyadh Season to promote ‘Latino Night’ and expand Golden Boy’s global footprint.”

“This is my division. I don't think he has any advantages over me. I'm the best cruiserweight,” said Ramirez, the WBA titleholder. “I'm really excited about this opportunity. I'll become the first Mexican unified cruiserweight champion. It's exciting, because my dream will come true. I've been putting in a lot of hard work with my training.”

“I wished him good luck for the Goulamirian fight. I rooted for him that night. It was a great performance from Zurdo,” said Billam-Smith. “I'm a different fighter and am better than Goulamirian in many areas. My speed and intensity at this weight causes a lot of cruiserweights a lot of problems. I'll get to prove it again versus Ramirez.

“Stylistically, it makes for a fantastic fight. We might respect each other now but on fight night it will be a fight you don't want to miss. That kind of fight really excites me.”

“This title unification opportunity for me is huge,” said Billam-Smith. “I've been written off many times before. Last time out [against Riakporhe], I was going into his backyard and it was all about him. It was supposed to be his night and I spoiled the party. Unfortunately for the Latinos on November 16, I'll be doing exactly the same again. All respect.”

I'm the opposite, I still remember what a carefully managed weight bully he was back at SMW, fighting Hart twice as defences and none of the other top guys as he held onto that belt as a pretender for long as he could make the weight.

Fact that he was with TR too.. they had no big SMW’a and barely worked with others. Can’t even remember who was the other champions back then.

Plant, BJS, Eubank Jr/Groves, Smith and Benivedez.
Remember the WBSS and all the SMW belts were on the line except his?
After being offered double his highest payday to enter, he was the only champion to turn it down and fight for a few hundred thou, while the WBSS paid out millions. There was a chance to have a 4 belt champ and he bottled it.

I remember now. Actually Groves was the only legit champion that entered. CEJ was IBO champion.

DeGale was busy playing hot potato with Truax for the IBF,

Benavidez was busy with PBC

Zurdo of course was WBO champion.

So only props to Groves.

fight predictions

Malik Scott, Boxing trainer and former pro
“Julian [Chua] is one of the brightest trainers in boxing. I enjoy learning from him. I had Zurdo for his fight with Joe Smith, and he did well. No disrespect to Billam-Smith, but this fight is a mismatch.

“Zurdo is a big, strong southpaw who’s faced tougher opponents than Billam-Smith. He’s a powerful body puncher with great angles and an incredible boxing mind. Billam-Smith is big and keeps coming forward, but he’s a one-trick pony.

“He has a good trainer, but I think Zurdo takes over in the second half. Zurdo has a dream team in his corner. I believe he’ll become undisputed champion, with Jai Opetaia as his only real challenge.”

Tim Rickson, BBN Editor
“I will backing Billam-Smith all the way. I was pleasantly surprised with his last win over Riakporhe. I wasn’t sure that he could get revenge, but he showed to everyone that you just can’t write him off. The same applies when he was struggling with Masternak, he turned that around too.

“I think Zurdo is going to be his best opponent yet and one of the most experienced fighters he’s ever faced. The southpaw is a great body puncher and swarmer, but ‘The Gentleman’ can bang! So if he gets too close and too open, then anything could happen when Billam-Smith lets them go! He can take a shot too, so it would take something special for Zurdo to hurt Smith.

“CBS is a 2/1 underdog at most bookies, but I’m going to trust in his bravery, tenacity and determination for him to grind it out and get the win. If he can weather the early storms and still be standing strong, then I think he will have a great chance down the stretch.”

Marshall Kauffman, Kings Boxing
“These both are great fighters.

“I am picking Ramirez in this fight since he has been in with better opposition and is physically the bigger fighter.”

Harrison Baskind, BBN Writer
“CBS has been the underdog many times before, however I think this time the challenge will prove too big for him. I expect Ramirez to win on points, I don’t see him knocking CBS out though.

“I think Ramirez will use all his experience and the fact he is a southpaw to make it too awkward for his opponent and outbox him, winning comfortably on the scorecards.”

Burim Sylejmani, Fides Sports Promotion
“The best fight currently in the Cruiserweight Division.

“I think Chris Billam-Smith will win this fight.”

Arijan Goricki, IBO title contender
“My prediction is CBS by UD. Ramirez doesn’t seems like he likes boxing any more.”

WBC sanctions Zepeda vs. Farmer for interim belt

Mexico's William “Camaron” Zepeda, who is ranked #1 by the WBC, will face the former 130-pound champion Tevin Farmer, for the WBC interim lightweight title on November 16th in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The sad part is Farmer (33-6-1) is coming off a loss in his last fight, against Raymond Muratalla, and therefore is not deserving of even an interim title fight. Farmer is rated #13 by the WBC so other higher-rated fighters were skipped over. Zepeda (31-0) will have the opportunity to be crowned champion against Farmer, former IBF junior lightweght champion from 2017-2020, in a duel of left-handed boxers. Zepeda, who is considered to be a knockout machine, is already training in the mountains of the State of Mexico, guided by trainers Jay “Panda” Najar and Carlos Duarte.
