Usyk old vs new

Post by cfang »

Does usyk beating aj twice, Dubois and fury settle the old vs new debate when it comes to heavyweights and size? Usyk bulks up to 220-230 but he’s 6 foot 3 and is probably more naturally a 200 lb fighter. He gives away 20-40 lbs against these guys.

Does this put to rest the argument that modern heavyweights are just too big for the old timers. Louis for example could bulk up to 220. A lot of people think heavys of the past his size would be cannon fodder to the current super heavy’s but has usyk proved that’s wrong? Or is he just so much better a boxer? Views?

It depends what size of HW you are comparing him to. Usyk isn’t small, Foreman was of a similar size in the 70s as was Ali. He’s slightly bigger than Holyfield too. Add to that he has a good skill set, good fitness,
good recovery and seems to take a decent punch.

Yeh, so he's same size as a lot of hw's of the past. Not many of current era hw's call in that bracket can argue, Povetkin, Haye, Wilder and Parker are in that bracket. but the majority of hw's in this era, are all above 240 pounds

Most dont even look like they work out, cus they dont need to make weight either. they're all just big.

Would also say Usyk was making weight, unlike the great HWs of the past. He has been about 220 as a HW.

That's a long way off from many of the past greats. He's have been a big HW up until 1970s-80s

Yh, he's keeping it consistent. hes a professional.

Some heavyweights will come in 240 one fight, then 270, then 263, then 236..

How can it settle a debate when we've had plenty of guys claiming Old time heavyweights who weighed in, in the 180's-190's would KO the 21st century crop of Heavyweights ? Little Usyk is still bigger than young Foreman, Liston, Louis, etc.

The fact that he's bigger than Liston, a big man for his era, tells it all.

yep, there's was an interview from when he's a cruiser and he said he's 212-215 for cruiser fights, and had to cut for the weigh in to make 200

he ended his amateur career fighting as a super heavyweight in the world series of boxing

at 6'3, with a 78 inch reach, weighing in the ring (not at weigh ins) from 210 to 220s, he'd be a big hw historically

many notable heavies from the past were roughly the size of light heavies/super middles today. check out jack johnson's resume and it's filled with guys who were even smaller than that.

With the science behind weight draining some old-time HW greats might even make 175 these days.
