Old(er) guy fights for title

Post by Caractacus »

Anyone remember sometime back in the 1990's,
where on one of the National Boxing shows (USA tUESDAY nIGHT FIGHTS OR ESPN)
the showed some former contender come out of the moth-balls
and fight for some boxing title.(that I don't think I had ever heard of before)
I seem to remember it may have been James Scott,
but don't seem to find the fight on his ring record.
anyone remember watching that fight with the older guy getting a shot ?

I'm pretty sure sometime in the 1990's (maybe around 1996)
anyway, I thought it was strange, like the belt was already engraved
with his name when they handed it to him after the fight.
anyway, from what I remember he hadn't fought in some years.
and something interrupted his boxing career.
Possibly the promotor Murad Muhammad may have been involved.

that's how I remember it some 25 years later.
They whole programme seemed kind of "fishy" to me.
it really stunk even if it was some kind of publicity stunt on
an otherwise 'reputable" boxing show.
so maybe it was USA Tuesday Night fights.
( which later went off the air as far as I remember)

I'm not exactly sure of the time frame, other then at least 20 years ago.
according to wikipedia ,James Scott was paroled in 2005.
( it must have been someone with a simeiler background in boxing)

It may have been an "honory" Championship belt.
and the dude was black/African-American
and the bout went 'the distance"

( maybe it was around then)
