Henry Maske vs James Toney (1996)

Post by EdwardRevolver1993 »

Could James Toney have done what he wasn't able to do - win a major belt at 175lbs - had he been given a shot (as a two-division IBF titlist) at a then-IBF light-heavyweight champ Henry Maske?

Toney had an active 1996, which culminated in a debatable decision loss to Montell Griffin.

Maske suffered his 1st and only career loss at the hands of Virgil Hill around the same time period.

Toney vs Maske in Germany.

How it goes?

If I remember right, Maske was effective but a tad robotic. I think Toney is too slick for him. Toney UD.

I don’t think Toney would knock Maske out. Toney certainly had the ability to win a solid split decision against Maske in Germany (best-case scenario in that era there). But it wouldn’t surprise me for Maske to win a 115-113 (x2) 112-116 decision. He was solid if unspectacular

Toney

He would work out Maske's orthodox style and roll in

You meant Toney would outwork Maske's southpaw style and roll in because Maske fought as a southpaw which you watch his fight closer.

I mean orthodox as in typical and well schooled, working off the jab

James "Lights Out" Toney wins, but the judges will be blind and give the fight to Henry Maske by split decision.
