Was good yes,
Gotta say Beterbiev vs. Bivol was flawless.
Pure boxing.
I think the first clinch was in round 11

Fury - Usyk I
It was a great fight and the event was massive (finally all four belts on the line in hw in how many years?)

Re: Fight of the Year 2024
+1 Vote for Haney vs. Garcia. I was in the arena. The crowd sentiment was unlike anything I have ever seen. Even on the subway ride back to Manhattan, people were gobsmacked with sheer excitement because of the fight. And it wasn’t that they were rooting for one fighter or another… to me, that is a true fight of the year.

Re: Fight of the Year 2024
It really has been dire if Fury v usyk and beterbiev v bivol are considered fights of the year.
Re: Fight of the Year 2024
Lots of good picks on the thread.
Gotta go with Vergil Ortiz v Serhii Bohachuk.
Absolutely amazing fight, couldn't keep my eyes off of it.

Re: Fight of the Year 2024
I am picking Beterbiev - Bivol. Two top undefeated guys fighting for the undisputed. Lot of action, enjoyed every single round. Missed some drama, but still, this is my FOTY

Re: Fight of the Year 2024
Defo need more drama.
Fursyk and BivBert were great occasions and very high quality, but never FOTY for me.
Remember when a 4th-down-the-bill undercard to Matthew Hatton - and not even for an area belt - at the Fenton Manor Sport Complex Stoke-on-Trent won it....?!

Re: Fight of the Year 2024

Re: Fight of the Year 2024
Yeah i dont get that Hagler - Hearns hype. That fight was just entertaining one sided beatdown for 3 rounds. Similar pattern like Canelo - Kirklandmargaret thatcher wrote: ↑02 Jan 2025, 13:05 samuels hair makes it even crazier![]()

When i first got big into boxing the best fights id seen were lewis v klitschko , gatti v ward and castillo v corrales. Everyone kept bringing up hagler hearns. I downloaded it all day, sat down with a beer and was very let down

The first minute was great then hagler kicked his ass. I dont consider that a standard bearer for great action fightsfunso banjo baby wrote: ↑03 Jan 2025, 09:16Jeff_lacy_ko wrote: ↑02 Jan 2025, 23:32100margaret thatcher wrote: ↑02 Jan 2025, 18:14 exactly, it was a very fun fight but perhaps the most overrated ever

The first round was great
I could reel off 5 more entertaining Round 1's right off the top of my head
Alfredo Angulo vs James Kirkland
Koba Gogoladze vs Ji Hoon Kim
Kendall Holt vs Thomas Davis
Kendall Holt vs Ricardo Torres
Juan Meza vs Jaime Garza
There are dozens of better fights than Hagler-Hearns.
Hell Hagler vs Mugabi is a better fight than Hagler vs Hearns in my opinion.

Re: Fight of the Year 2024
not at all, its made out to be the best fight ever but it's really just an entertaining beatdown of hearns after about 90 seconds. his legs go to mush after that. no traded knockdowns, no constant momentum shifts, no big comeback, etc. at no point does hagler look in danger of losing or really even get budged. watch it again and tell me how any of those points are wrong.funso banjo baby wrote: ↑03 Jan 2025, 09:16Jeff_lacy_ko wrote: ↑02 Jan 2025, 23:32100margaret thatcher wrote: ↑02 Jan 2025, 18:14 exactly, it was a very fun fight but perhaps the most overrated ever

compare that to renda-samuels above where renda gets hurt, then drops samuels, then gets battered. then a double KD where samuels gets the worst of it, then samuels rallyings back to force the stoppage
or compare ir to sam ahmad vs elvir muriqi - 7 kds in 3 rounds (split 4-3), huge momentum shifts. you have a guy get dropped and then score a huge knockdown of his own with literally the next punch after the action resumes. the guy who was getting the worst of it eventually gets on top, etc.
another is carrasquilla vs hwan. the korean is dropped 4 times in round 2, shows incredible heart and miracously comes back to score a ko in round 3
then theres ezra sellers vs carl the cat where they keep trading huge knockdowns and rallying from the brink. these are all 3 or 4 round fights with more packed into them than hagler-hearns. then you get into longer fights like corralles-castillo and it's no contest
hagler-hearns was a very good fight but its become so mythicized that its now incredibly overrated
Re: Fight of the Year 2024
Antwun Echols vs Charles Brewer is another great 3 round slugfest that is more entertaining to watch than Hagler-Hearns.

Re: Fight of the Year 2024
indeed, a classic from a great era of tv boxing, back when there was friday night fights every week + regular boxing on fox
brewer's team was pissed at the stoppage. he was seriously hurt, but tbf the ref did give echols a LOT more opportunity to come back then he gave brewer.

Hagler v Hearns is an entry level era defining fight for anyone interested in the golden era. Of course there were more exciting fights. Anyone of rocky Kelly's small hall tearups?
But I suspect there's a bit of modern negging of the golden era and it's undeniable legends due to what I can only describe as 'jakepaulian drift'.
