Ali Akhmedov vs. Malcolm Jones added to Omar Trinidad-Mike Plania show on January 17

Following a year in which he fought three times, super middleweight prospect Ali Akhmedov will start 2025 early with an appearance on the January 17 broadcast headlined by featherweight prospect Omar Trinidad vs. Mike Plania, according to 360 Promotions.

Akhmedov, 22-1 (16 KOs), has won six in a row since his sole defeat, a 12th-round knockout loss to Carlos Gongora in December 2020. Akhmedov was well ahead on the scorecards but failed to make it to the final bell.

In Akhmedov’s last outing, in September, he had to settle for a split decision victory over Pierre Hubert Dibombe. Akhmedov was dropped in the eighth round in what was more of a flash knockdown.

On January 17, Akhmedov, a 29-year-old from Kazakhstan will take on Malcolm Jones, 17-4-1 (10 KOs). The event will stream on UFC Fight Pass from The Commerce Casino & Hotel just outside of Los Angeles, California.

Jones, a 32-year-old from Indianapolis, Indiana, went winless in 2024 and represents a step backwards from Dibombe. Jones was stopped in four rounds in February by the 19-3-2 Immanuwel Aleem, and then he fought to a draw in October with the 11-17-2 Victor Hugo Exner.

The Trinidad-Plania broadcast also features Mizuki Hiruta defending her WBO junior bantamweight title against Maribel “Pantera” Ramirez.

Another eight fights are currently scheduled for the show:

Featherweight – six rounds
Iyana “Roxy” Verduzco, 2-0 (0 KOs) vs Lindsey Ellis, 2-1 (2 KOs)

Junior bantamweight – eight rounds
Gloria Munguilla, 6-1 (0 KOs) vs Brook Sibrian, 5-1 (2 KOs)

Junior middleweight – six rounds
Joshua Anton, 8-0 (8 KOs) vs Cameron Krael, 21-33-3 (7 KOs)

Bantamweight – six rounds
Adan Palma, 10-0 (6 KOs) vs Sharone Carter, 14-8-1 (3 KOs)

Super featherweight – six rounds
Tayden Beltran, 9-0-1 (4 KOs) vs Eugene Lagos, 16-8-3 (11 KOs)

Strawweight – six rounds
Alexander Gueche, 6-0 (5 KOs) vs Lito Dante, 21-13-4 (12 KOs)

Bantamweight – four rounds
Oscar Ochoa, 1-0 (0 KOs) vs Eduardo Sanchez, 1-1 (0 KOs)

Featherweight – four rounds

Ali Akhmedov now training with Ricky Funez

Super middleweight Ali Akhmedov has recently started working with trainer Ricky Funez. He previously worked with Johnathon Banks.

Akhmedov returns against Malcolm Jones in a 10-round fight on Friday at the Commerce Casino in Commerce, California. The bout will be streamed on UFC Fight Pass.

Akhmedov, a 29-year-old from Kazakhstan, is trying to follow in the footsteps of his countryman Gennadiy Golovkin – another fighter formerly trained by Banks.

Akhmedov lost in 2020 to Carlos Gongora, who stopped him in the 12th round when Akhmedov was leading on the scorecards. He has won six straight fights since then, but his last performance – against Pierre Hubert Dibombe in September – was less than stellar. Akhmedov hit the canvas in the eighth round, but won a split decision. The momentum he had built up in the four years since his loss began to deflate.

“He definitely did not have his best performance in Ireland,” Charles Bosecker, the matchmaker for 360 Promotions, said. “I know that he was dealing with some complications for that fight.”

Bosecker noted that Akhmedov, 22-1 (16 KOs), had travel issues as he was delayed getting to Ireland, coming off a training camp from hell. Akhmedov has adjusted his preparation for his next fight accordingly.

Jones, 32, from Indianapolis, Indiana, is promoted by Michael Reyes’ Reyes Boxing. He enters the fight coming off a draw in October and holds a record of 17-4-1 (10 KOs).

For Akhmedov, the fight serves as a chance to reestablish himself as a contender in the division. Akhmedov is currently ranked No. 13 by the WBC and No. 15 by the IBF.

“Hopefully with a full training camp and a new trainer he will come out victorious and make a little bit of a statement,” Bosecker said.

Southern California wildfires won’t affect Omar Trinidad vs. Mike Plania

The January 17 show featuring featherweight prospect Omar Trinidad vs. Mike Plania will go forward in Commerce, California, which is just south of Los Angeles but is not near any of the active wildfires currently affecting the region.

The show’s promoter, Tom Loeffler of 360 Promotions, confirmed to BS that the event remains set for The Commerce Casino & Hotel.

The blazes – spreading rapidly due to very high winds – have devastated this area and its residents.

So far, the fires have killed at least 24 people, displaced countless others, and destroyed tens of thousands of acres of forest and more than 12,000 structures, according to the New York Times and the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection.

Commerce, California, is in southeast Los Angeles County. The active wildfires are located in the western, northern and northeastern sections of the city and nearby communities.

Other sporting events in other parts of the city have been canceled or relocated. Tonight’s NFL playoff game between the Los Angeles Rams and the Minnesota Vikings was moved from Inglewood, California, to Arizona. L.A.’s NBA and NHL teams postponed a few games last week, although the Los Angeles Clippers are scheduled to play tonight at home.
