To Wouter: Fix John L. Gardner's Height

Post by scorpio83 »

Hello Wouter,

I want to tell you that you or your fellow administration listed Gardner's height at 5'11 1/2 (182 cm) on this website. However, I watched Gardner's fights against Paul Sykes, Lorenzo Zanon and Michael Dokes, Gardner didn't stand at 5'11 1/2", but I believe Gardner stood at least 6 feet. Watch Gardner's fight against Paul Sykes, who stood 6'3" and pause when they were standing at close range. Please change Gardner's height from 5'11 1/2" to 6'0".

Unless I see Jake Matlala listed as 6’4, I’m not changing anything based on somebody’s interpretation of YouTube clips. As Goose says, why is not Sykes that is shorter instead of the other way around? But I’m not the only editor here, so you might convince someone else and he’ll make the change for you.

Are we eyeballing a less than 1.5 cm change based on pausing a youtube video?

Thanks Wouter,

I found the full video of the fight between John L. Gardner and Paul Sykes including their entrance and pre-fight instruction as the fight was commentated by the late great Harry Carpenter. I'm convinced that Gardner stood 5'11 1/2" and took Carpenter's word for it even though I looked at Gardner's size that he looked like he stood at least 6 feet tall (183 cm). Also, Carpenter stated that Sykes stood 6'3" (191 cm) and he was taller than Gardner by 3 inches which would make Gardner stands at 6 feet tall. If Gardner stood 5'11 1/2 (182 cm), then Sykes might stood at 6'2 1/2".

Here's the longer version and listened to Carpenter's words before the introduction and while Gardner and Sykes fought in the first round of their fight.

Let me ask this: There is a you tube video of Nonito Donaire being measured by a nurse. He's not wearing shoes and his height is 5'5.5". Yet, he's still listed as 5'7". Why ? What's the source for the 5'7" listing and why is the video discounted ?

I get it when people’s heights are 2 or more inches out but half an inch? Measure half an inch gap using your thumb and forefinger, it’s negligible and can be affected by hair, footwear, how straight someone stands and even the time of day as everyone is taller in the morning than they are at night. Most people lie about their height as well.

Well, look at the WWE, they lied most of the wrestlers' height like Andre the Giant 7'4", but he actually stood either 6'11 or 7 feet tall.

Exactly, lots of boxers heights are wrong too but half an inch isn’t worth quibbling over.

Consider that a 180cm / 6ft person's height can vary by 1.5cm / 1/2 inch over a day. We really need to know how many hours they had been upright prior to the observation. What time did Gardner wake up that day and how much time did he spend in an upright position ?
