World bodies - guess how many there are before you look!

Post by dondada »

A little bit from a recent article by Kevin Taylor:

"In a recent survey on the World Boxing Group website the WBF was ranked at a respectable sixth out of the thirty-one current world governing bodies, one place above the WBU. (Yes, thirty-one here they are IBF, WBA, WBC, IBO, WBO, WBF, WBU, IBC, NBA, IBA, WBB, TWBA, GBO, GBC, NABC, WBL, UBA, UBF, UBC, WAA, WCOB, WBE, IBL, IBB, GBF, GBA, UNIBOX, WBN, IBU, WBI, & WJBF)"

Not including Super Champions and Interim Champions....

How does every one rate them. In the poll they have IBO above WBO, and WBF above WBU. thoughts?

If you remove the factor of prestige gained through how old the bodies are, then I think the IBO would be ok. As far as I know, they've had no corruption problems and have an objective rankings system, which is quite a big plus for me. So I think they're fine. They had Lewis, and got Johnson/Tarver as well.

I am gravely worried however that the saturation of sanctioning bodies has left the permutations and initials for new ones limited. New sanctioning bodies are going to have to move on...World, international, universal and global have all been done, we're going to have to have intergalactical and Trans-Milky Way bodies now.

Also how can they miss the WUBA? Some people. http://www.wuboxing.com/

Also meant to say, WBF v WBU Much the same I think. Used by 'up and coming' padded-record-fight-for-a-'wrodl title' fighters. WBF seems to have better rankings than WBU, although - and it was on here a wee while ago - do you think the WBF goes through the motions of asking their #1 Vitali Klitchko if he'll fight Audrey? Total joke really

The only problem for the IBO is the quality of some of their champions and their world title challengers. They did give away some of their belts though to the top people. The problems is that as the fighters don't give a toss about the belt, it's going to be impossible to enforce mandatories, and therefore they will end up having to strip champions all the time, and only end up with the fighters who are prepared to fight for an IBO title.

They have or have had some good champions, they had lewis, now have jonhnson who fought tarver or it,Naz vs Barrera for it/ also Robin REID, and Carl Thompson are champions,

some decent fighters there,

There are more federations they skipped: TBA, WTF, etc. :TU:

The problems is not too many divisions, but too many federations! Have all of them play a tournament and have just one champ per division. The way it used to be. Then we would have better fights and sufficient talent pool in all divisions.

Its hard to rate the WBU because 80%+ of their titles fights are promoted by the same promoter. And thats probably the same with most of the titles that they have limited promoter support and are alternatives to regional titles.

That leads me to think that maybe someone should come up with a way of independently ranking the promoters instead of the fighters.

That way the average Joe could at least get used to the promoters and recognise that they hold some of the top fighters. It might also give the promoter an incentive to arrange better matches.

Just a personal opinion:

IBF - corrupt

WBA - corrupt, plus John Ruiz is officially the world's best heavyweight

WBC - corrupt, but it's arguably the most sought-after "alphabet" title

IBO - in a perfect world, we'd have one champion per weight, but if we're stuck with sanctioning bodies, the IBO should be no. 1. Computerised ratings,
less "boxing politics" and they have had some decent champions, it's just a shame that they don't have the clout of the "Big Four".

WBO - allegedly's idea of a "major" world title. Boasts legendary champions Scott Harrison and Joe "Sicknote" Calzaghe in its ranks, and let's not forget the worthy challengers - Tocker Pudwill, Mario Veit, Samuel Kebede...

WBF - probably only rated this high due to its status in Asia and Oceania.

WBU - Warren's Boxing Union.

IBC - Insignificant Boxing Council. I once saw an IBC title fight on Eurosport featuring Virgil Kalakoda - it seemed as if there were only about 100 people in the audience. Also, didn't they have Brian Nielsen at the top of their rankings even though he'd been retired for two years?

NBA - The worst "world title" fight I've ever had the misfortune to see. Tony Halme v. Yacine Kingbo at heavyweight. No punches at all thrown in the first round, second round starts, no action, then suddenly Kingbo lands flush and knocks Halme out cold.

IBA - I think RJJ got awarded this, whether he knew about it is another matter. Are they still trying to sell that house on their website?

WBB - Who?

TWBA - A world body whose world extends to the borders of Spain and Portugal.

The rest are all worthless, but special mention must go to the WAA and their ex-heavyweight champion of the world - ERIC "BUTTERBEAN" ESCH!

Is the WBI real? I'm sure that was a made up sanctioning body the used in 'The Great White Hype' (possibly the worst boxing film ever)
