Let me just state for the record. Whether she did or she didn't have Marijuana in her system. I don't care, and it doesn't change anything in my eyes.

I love nothing more than sticking the boot into Shields but marijuana should be ignored in testing

Claressa Shields’ team makes her case in positive marijuana test

Claressa Shields’ team has issued a stern response to news that the three-division undisputed champion had tested positive for marijuana.

Shields was suspended by the Michigan Unarmed Combat Commission on Thursday and was issued a related “show cause notice” by the WBO after the commission accused Shields of testing positive for marijuana following her win over Danielle Perkins on February 2 in her hometown of Flint.

The 29-year-old Shields, 16-0 (3 KOs), has yet to comment publicly on the situation. However, her promoter, Dmitry Salita, shared his comments with BS and on social media on Friday:

“Claressa Shields has built her career on hard work, discipline and an unwavering commitment to clean competition,” Salita said. “She stands by her record, her historic achievements and her integrity as a world champion. She has been an inspiration to countless men and women throughout the United States and throughout the world since she was a teenage Olympian.”

In the official communication from WBO founding president Luis Batista Salas, which was addressed to Salita, Shields was said to have submitted an oral fluid sample that “indicated a positive result for the presence of Marijuana (THC).”

The WBO’s show cause notice – which Shields’ team has 30 days to respond to – essentially serves as a motion directing Shields to provide evidence disproving the violation. In addition to her suspension from the Michigan commission, Shields could be stripped of the WBO’s version of the women’s heavyweight title.

Salita maintains Shields’ innocence and believes she has an airtight case that will clear her name.

“This is a pending matter with the Michigan commission and, as such, I cannot share much more,” Salita told BS. “However, we are 100 percent confident that Claressa Shields will be vindicated when this matter concludes and all the evidence is heard.”

Shields’ nutritionist Victor Conte – who is very knowledgeable when it comes to performance-enhancing drugs but is not necessarily an expert in marijuana testing – says only trace amounts of marijuana were found in her sample; BS has not obtained a copy of the test results to verify this claim. Conte says it is abnormal for commissions to utilize mouth swabs for the sake of marijuana testing, and he believes Shields could have tested positive due to secondhand smoke in the arena or from other contact with people who had recently smoked marijuana.

A phone call placed to the Michigan Unarmed Combat Commission after business hours Friday was sent to voicemail. BS will update this report with any comments or updates after its publishing.

Marijuana, while banned in some jurisdictions, including Michigan, is otherwise not universally viewed as a performance-enhancing drug. While the World Anti-Doping Agency has banned all cannabinoid usage for in-competition testing, the Voluntary Anti-Doping Association, or VADA, removed the substance from its testing list in 2012.

In 2021, the Nevada State Athletic Commission – which had previously issued severe penalties to some fighters who tested positive for marijuana – said it would no longer punish fighters who used cannabis unless they showed up impaired, and therefore wouldn’t be allowed to fight.

“One thing I can say with confidence: Claressa Shields did not and does not ingest illicit drugs of any kind, including marijuana,” Salita said. “And there is nothing in this instance that will tarnish her still-growing legacy.”

Claressa Shields set to be cleared over ‘failed drug test’

Claressa Shields will be cleared of drug test allegations as further information on her testing procedures and outcome is released.

The undisputed champion faced question marks over her reputation following a mouth swab test in the wake of her victory over heavyweight Danielle Perkins. Low amounts of marijuana were found in samples despite urine being clear, according to her team’s own investigation.

Shields and her manager, Mark Taffet, have continuously protested her innocence despite launching a WBO and Michigan Unarmed Combat Commission investigation as a matter of public interest. The WBO wants Shields to ‘show notice’ why the substance was in her system, while Taffet is unhappy with the nature of the document.

However, as news filtered through of two more positive tests from the undercard of two previously clean athletes, as reported by The Ring, Shields took to social media.

“Thank you to my fans and supporters. Your love and support is felt. The truth always rises, and so do I. It’s gone take more than lies and slander to bring the GWOAT down,” she said.

The removal of disciplinary action is closer than ever following the results of the tests taken on February 2. It’s reported that Joseph Hicks and Skylar Lacy both had minute traces of substances from their swabs, which undoubtedly points to second-hand smoke inhalation. The safety of professional athletes competing in arenas where marijuana is permitted is leaving a stain on the integrity of professional boxing.

Fans on social media have since stated this is a clear case of second-hand smoke contamination. As the controversy renewed over how the matter was handled, WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman expressed his thoughts.

WBC support for Claressa Shields
“On February 13, 2025, the Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs, on behalf of the Unarmed Combat Commission, notified the WBC that an oral fluid sample collected from WBC World Champion Claressa Shields tested positive for the presence of marijuana [THC]. The Michigan Commission had collected a sample from Champion Shield after her February 2, 2025, title defense against Daniella Perkins.

“In the spirit of complete clarity and transparency, the WBC would like to reiterate that THC is not a banned substance according to the VADA prohibited substances list. VADA is the agency that administers the WBC’s anti-doping program known as the WBC Clean Boxing Program [WBC CBP]. Simply put, Marijuana [THC] is not a performance enhancing drug. Therefore, Champion Shields will not be found at fault nor will she receive any penalty with regards to her status as champion. However, the WBC will initiate an administrative process with Champion Shields in connection with the Michigan Commission’s finding to address the matter, focusing on its health and social effects. The WBC will not comment on the matter until that process is completed.”

He added, “The WBC will not stand still while boxers publicly celebrate the use of cannabis or engage in reprehensible behavior while under its influence. The WBC strongly and resolutely condemns such behavior in particular and boxers’ use of cannabis in general. Boxing is the greatest sport in the world; it is honorable and should be conducted under fair play and justice principles at all times.”

Cannabis can mask PED use. I'm not saying that's what happened here, more that overlooking cannabis positive tests is naive.

Did they use this supposed positive result for Marijuana as an excuse to overturn the outcome of her last fight or are they just suspended her?

Either way I'd probably be looking for some sorta way to sue the commission if I were her, but I'm wondering what their punishment for this is.

Claressa Shields reveals trial date, ready to prove innocence

Claressa Shields has revealed her trial date. She is preparing to present evidence to the Michigan Commission regarding a failed drug test.

The undisputed heavyweight champion stands accused of having marijuana in her system from a post-fight February 2nd test but denies ever smoking the banned substance. After defeating Danielle Perkins to claim another landmark in her career, Shields was given a mouth swab test in the aftermath.

Shields says her minimal result for THC was a product of her surroundings as fans inside the Dort Financial Center in her hometown of Flint [where marijuana is legal] may have caused a cloud in the atmosphere that, in turn, made particles enter her mouth for the test.

After a stern defense from manager Mark Taffett and promoter Dmitriy Salita, Shields revealed the date that she would make her defense presentation.

“March 6th, I go to trial! I pray this Michigan Commission suspension gets revoked. I have never smoked marijuana ever,” protested Shields. “I’m innocent until proven guilty!

“Also, 3.0 Nanograms is a very minute amount. Stay tuned,” she added.

On detractors jumping on her temporary suspension notice, Shields said, “All of these networks that are click-baiting on social media are wrong, too. Every fighter who has a bad test gets “Temporarily Suspended!” I am innocent until proven guilty. I am not suspended from boxing as a whole. I just can’t fight in Michigan til my trial is over!”

Victor Conte, the nutrition guru behind Snac, which Devin Haney and Terence Crawford use, is a staunch advocate for Shields. He has continued to question the methods used for the initial testing procedure.

“It seems that the Michigan Unarmed Combat Commission needs to revise its swab testing procedure for marijuana immediately. During the Claressa Shields fight night, there was heavy marijuana smoke in the arena. My understanding is that there were three positive tests for marijuana that night,” said Conte.

“In my opinion, it is the responsibility of the Michigan Commission to protect the health and safety of the combat participants. Not to penalize them for being exposed to second-hand smoke with absolutely no intention to cheat. When all the facts come out, I hope that the Michigan Commission will take responsibility for using a test method that is not scientifically valid for sports drug testing.

He added, “Claressa Shields vows to be vindicated after positive marijuana test and WBO investigation. Claressa Shields’ promoter Dmitriy Salita said they are “100 percent confident” the boxer will be “vindicated once evidence is heard” after she tested positive for marijuana. In my opinion, Claressa Shields is simply a victim of an inept drug testing procedure for marijuana that is not effective or suitable for use in sports drug testing.”

In a few days, Shields will find out the final verdict.
