On February 19, 2000, Erik "El Terrible" Morales of Tijuana, Mexico, defended his WBC World Super Bantamweight Crown against his nemesis and countryman Marco Antonio Barrera of Mexico City.
It was a thrilling slugfest for the edges. A fight that got everyone on the edge of their seats. Two guys that didn't like each other that made one of the greatest boxing history rivalries.
This Mexican civil war was the first great fight of the millennium. It had everything. A must watch.
Two-all time top 100 pound per pound great boxers in my book, also gave us one of the greatest trilogies of all-time.
Terrible won the first fight by split decision. It was a very hard fight to score. I have scored it a draw. Many people saw Barrera win.
What were your score cards in this fight of two men that were evenly matched?

Can’t remember score card but I remember these fights and thinking I have absolutely no idea how these guys could fight at that pace. A factor that is overlooked is some of these greats have the psychological ability during a fight to tell themselves “ I’m not tired. Keep pushing “. As opposed to damn I’ve thrown a million punches and this guy keeps coming. I’m getting worn out over here.elmersalsa wrote: ↑22 Feb 2025, 05:46 On February 19, 2000, Erik "El Terrible" Morales of Tijuana, Mexico, defended his WBC World Super Bantamweight Crown against his nemesis and countryman Marco Antonio Barrera of Mexico City.

Who was the better fighter between the two? It's kinda close just like their three bouts.

I think the same. But, in the other side of the coin, Erik "El Terrible" Morales beat guys that Marco Antonio Barrera could not beat like Junior Jones and Manny Pacquiao and won 4 world titles in 4 different weight classes.DrDuke wrote: ↑23 Feb 2025, 23:44Barrera.elmersalsa wrote: ↑23 Feb 2025, 12:57 Who was the better fighter between the two? But, head to head it was razor thin close. Some people say that Barrera won fight #1. Morales fight #2. Those fights were so close as their overall careers.

Yes, it was Barrera, Morales, Barrera. Considering that both are great, it's not right to pick Morales over Barerra, since Barrera won the trilogy.elmersalsa wrote: ↑24 Feb 2025, 01:32I think the same. You may have a point there. In my top 100 pound per pound all-time greatest boxers, I have Marco Antonio Barrera over Erik "El Terrible" Morales in the rankings.DrDuke wrote: ↑24 Feb 2025, 03:44Yes, it was Barrera, Morales, Barrera. But, they are not far from each other, though.

For the record I thought the 3 fights were 1-1-1, but I had no issue with Barrera getting the decision in the 3rd fight as he'd had the more dramatic moments, and all that.DrDuke wrote: ↑24 Feb 2025, 03:44Yes, it was Barrera, Morales, Barrera. Barrera not getting the decision in the 1st fight was definitely the most egregious decision of the 3 fights.
I know they didn't like each other, but I was a fan of both guys. They took on everyone.

And they became very close friends after the retirement.gilgamesh wrote: ↑24 Feb 2025, 14:21For the record I thought the 3 fights were 1-1-1, but I had no issue with Barrera getting the decision in the 3rd fight as he'd had the more dramatic moments, and all that.DrDuke wrote: ↑24 Feb 2025, 03:44Yes, it was Barrera, Morales, Barrera.
