ARCHIE SHARP VS. MAXI HUGHES IN THE WORKS FOR MAY 23 IN DONCASTER

ARCHIE SHARP will look to bounce back from his first professional defeat in an all-British showdown with Maxi Hughes on May 23.

The 29-year-old had been steadily climbing the super-featherweight rankings but his progress was checked when he lost on points to Southampton’s Ryan Garner last July.

That defeat left Sharp at 25-1 (9) but he now looks set to make his move up to lightweight and The Ring understands that his 135lb debut will come against seasoned world level campaigner Hughes, 34.

‘Maximus’ suffered back-to-back defeats to George Kambosos Jr and William Zepeda but has rebuilt since then with a six-round win over Efstathios Antonas in September before an impressive shutout victory over Gary Cully in Monte Carlo three months later.

A clash between Hughes and Josh Padley, who was beaten by Shakur Stevenson in Riyadh on February 22, had been mooted but it now looks like he will instead take on Sharp.

The fight is likely to land in Doncaster as part of the undercard for Terri Harper’s WBO world lightweight title defence against Natalie Zimmermann at the Eco-Power Stadium on May 23.

As reported by The Ring this week, the GBM-promoted show will be formally announced at a press conference on Monday and Sharp’s encounter with Hughes could be part of it.

Archie should get taken to school but I do give him a slim chance of being competitive.

MAXI HUGHES: FROM PAINTING HIS HOME STADIUM, TO FIGHTING INSIDE IT

Over the past two years, Maxi Hughes has been on something of a world tour.

An outstanding run of form led the lightweight into world class and across the Atlantic. He boxed former unified and Ring Magazine champion George Kambosos, in Oklahoma before then travelling to Las Vegas, Nevada to take on unbeaten Mexican contender William Zepeda. Last December, he travelled to the south of France and beat Gary Cully in the beautiful Principality of Monaco.

This weekend, the 35-year-old gets a home fixture. On Friday night, Hughes (28-7-2, 6 KOs) boxes Archie Sharp (25-1, 9 KOs) at Doncaster's EcoPower Stadium, less than a ten minute drive from the village he grew up in.

"Oh, yeah, it's brilliant. I've got familiar with the stadium as well," Hughes told The Ring.

"I've been going up there quite a lot with media. The running track I use is on the premises as well so it's special and as much as I've been all over the world, it's nice to do it at home.

"I worked for my uncle's company on the tools, painting. He's a local Doncaster firm so about 12 years ago, in and around the stadium where there's some breeze block walls, they all needed painting and I got the job.

"So I've actually worked on the stadium as a painter, getting it looking all smart."

Hughes is returning home on the back of an important win.

In July 2023, he put in a good performance against Kambosos and was extremely unlucky to lose a majority decision and his IBO title. The fourth-round stoppage loss to Zepeda last March was difficult to deal with, for far different reasons. Hughes' preparations were destroyed by terrible visa issues and he was then taken apart in four one-sided rounds.

He righted the ship by outclassing the dangerous Cully as the away fighter on Matchroom's December 14 bill in Monte-Carlo. From the outside, the dominant ten-round decision victory with a trio of 100-90 scorecards looked like a smooth return to form.

"A lot of people say that, but for me, it wasn't," Hughes said.

"I had absolutely terrible preparation for that. It's a good experience to tick off but I had a chest and ear infection. The worry was that if I pulled out, I wouldn't get another opportunity so was like, "Right, I've got enough in me and in the locker to beat Cully."

"Sean [O'Hagan, his trainer] wouldn't let me come to the gym because we had other lads fighting and I didn't want to pass the virus on so, I did a lot by myself in my garage. I've got a punch bag in there and some space to do some exercises so was just beasting myself in a garage.

"I remember I kept saying, "If this doesn't go, I'm going to have to pull out."

"I did about three or four weeks. It wasn't good but I stuck with it. I kept disciplined on the diet and didn't feel sorry for myself.

"All I kept telling myself was, "I'll be alright" and then obviously I pulled it out. That was a 60% Maxi."

Hughes hasn't picked an easy touch for his homecoming.

Sharp is a career junior-lightweight but elected to move up to the 135lb division after losing his undefeated record on points against current European champion Ryan Garner (17-0, 8 KOs) last year. Sharp was a staple in the higher reaches of the WBO world rankings for years and, aged 30, looks likely to benefit from the additional five pounds.

Sharp is aware Hughes will pose the toughest challenge of his career but the world-ranked Yorkshireman also represents the type of test he has craved for years.

Hughes knows exactly how Sharp will be feeling and wonders how he will cope as the days and hours tick down to the first bell.

"He was the fourth choice, to be honest. I'll not say the other names but the name that was public was Josh Padley. We actually started negotiations with him before he got the Shakur Stevenson fight," Hughes said.

"We felt we needed a domestic opponent to sell it. So that's what we did. We were looking at global names and European names, but it's an hard sell so we sort of went down the list of the UK rankings and Archie Sharp was looking for a fight so we offered it to him. It's his first one at lightweight so he jumped at the chance.

"I've been there myself where you're an underdog and you're in the biggest night of your career. I've actually been in a few but, for me, the Jovanni Straffon [UD12] fight at Headingley Stadium was a big opportunity and that brought the best out of me.

"Whether it'll do that to Archie, we'll see. It could do that or he could fold under the pressure. We don't know yet, because he's not had this sort of test or fight so there's a lot of unanswered questions around him but we'll see.

"I'm expecting and I'm preparing for the best version of him.”

Should Hughes get past Sharp, he will once again set his mind on securing a shot at a major world title before calling time on his career.

The WBC, WBA and IBF all rank him inside their respective top-15 divisional ratings and the winner of this Friday's fight will leave the ring with the WBC silver title.

Rather than waiting for his name to be called, Hughes is determined to do all he can to force the issue.

"The reason I kept pestering the promoters for this belt is that Dalton Smith obviously won it and defended it and he's been made mandatory so that's the path I want to go,” he said.

"If I'm not going to get that life-changing opportunity like Padley, I'm going to have to earn it and get made mandatory so I can't be ignored."

Maxi Hughes and Archie Sharp meet to shape one another’s future

If a narrow win over Kid Galahad in 2022 wasn't a career pinnacle, Maxi Hughes had certainly reached a peak – a moment that he parlayed into back-to-back bouts against world-class opponents George Kambosos Jnr and William Zepeda, once and future titleholders, respectively.

Trouble was, Hughes came up short in both instances – and was especially overwhelmed in a body-crunching stoppage at the unrelenting hands of Zepeda. After building himself up over the back half of his career despite a number of setbacks through its early stages, Hughes seemed to come up against a wall. Maybe, at age 34, he had already climbed as high as his abilities would allow.

But Hughes, 28-7-2 (6 KOs), says he isn’t done reaching, and on Friday at EcoPower Stadium in Doncaster, England, he will face Archie Sharp in hopes of positioning himself for another big fight and, perhaps, as close as a rung away from a world title.

“The fire that I’ve got in me right now, you wouldn’t believe it,” said Hughes, of Rossington, England. “I’ve held the IBO world title, and my goal has always been to get one of the big four. I’ve been very close to that goal before, and that’s why I need to win that WBC Silver title here on Friday night – it puts me right in the mix for a world title shot.”

Hughes is coming off a six-rounder against the anonymous Efstathios Antonas (TKO6) and a 10-round unanimous decision over the little-known Gary Cully, so the 30-year-old Sharp, 25-1 (9 KOs), may initially appear to be a reach too far. But in a bit of solid matchmaking, Sharp is coming off his first loss – by points – last July. The outcome could have dramatic implications, in either direction, for both men.

“I’m very confident in what I can do,” said Sharp, from Sidcup in Kent, England. “That’s why I am coming to his hometown to do it. It’s a big opportunity for me. I feel great at this weight and my preparation has been great. All I can say is I am ready.”

Also in support of the Terri Harper-Natalie Zimmerman main event, rivals Tysie Gallagher and Ebonie Jones – who first squared up as 12-year-old amateurs – will meet for the first time as pros in a junior featherweight 10-rounder for Gallagher’s pair of minor belts.

“Winning these titles will open up a lot of doors for me, so I’ve been training very, very hard,” said Jones, 6-0-1. “Holding these belts is a pathway to bigger things. I’m standing in the way of Tysie getting those big opportunities and I’m going to seize them for myself. No predictions, except I am confident my hand gets raised.”

Jones, a 27-year-old from Portsmouth, England, won the two fights between the amateur rivals. But Gallagher, 26, of Luton, England, considers those clashes ancient history.

“Those amateur fights mean nothing,” said Gallagher, 9-2. “I was 12 and 17 years old when they happened. Now I am an established professional holding multiple belts. I live and train like a true professional champion and I am getting better with every fight.”

WFOTY contender.
Definitely worst main event fight so far this year.

Maxi Hughes defeated Archie Sharp via unanimous decision in one of the dullest championship 12-rounders ever seen in a British ring.

Disgraceful and the referee surely had a case for throwing Sharp out.

That should hopefully be the last time he gets anywhere near a televised fight.

He can be added to a list of UK boxers who embarrassed themselves and rhe sport in fights:

Johnny Nelson (v De Leon and Waring)
David Starie (v Calzaghe)
Matthew Barney (v Froch)
Archie Sharp (v Hughes)

Must be more but they spring to mind

Barney against anyone was awful. Nelson stunk out venues on a number of occasions.

That was a miserable performance from Sharp. I hope he understands the effect this result will have on the remaining part of his career.

There was actually a highlight when Hughes clobbered Sharp about halfway through the fight and buckled his legs. Then there was the bizarre sight of Archie calling in Maxi while back peddling as fast as possible !

The referee should take his share of the blame and be hauled up before the Board. If a boxer isn't there to fight and they've been given enough warnings, then disqualify them.

Interesting observation. I found his performances as tedious as hell and his presence irritating but hoped when he retired that would be the last we see of him :witzend:

None of the blame can be attributed to Hughes. He tried his damndest to make a fight of it but Sharp just didn't want to know.

That's Sharpe finished now - neither TV or the big promoters will book him after this disaster.

Its hard to think now, but at one stage he was quite a fun fighter and a ticket seller :o
