please help me understand how is the algorithm work

I’m a boxing fan trying to understand how the algorithm work.
read the wiki describtion several times,but my intelligent level can’t keep up.

my question is about rating only ,not ranking,not predictions

how do a boxer receive rating points?

for example
John and Billy is debut boxer,after they fought,John had KO victory.
so whats the rating of both fighter?
john is rating 1 and billy is 0?

and John got KOed by another fighter Zack,who also had KO victory in his debut-bout.

what’s the rating of John and Zack?

an opponent with rating of 1/20 else.

So it's basically a complicated numbers game that in an alltime ranking Alfio Righettie who won 36 and lost only twice is rated below Salvatore Ruggirelo (70 losses), Giovanni Martin (20 losses), Giuseppe Spalla (33 losses), and Italo Colonnelo (30 losses)? Sad.
