please help me understand how is the algorithm work

Post by lhd »

dear all
I’m a boxing fan trying to understand how the algorithm work.
read the wiki describtion several times, but my intelligent level can’t keep up. :KO:

my question is about rating only ,not ranking, not predictions

how do a boxer receive rating points?

for example
John and Billy is debut boxer, after they fought,John had KO victory.
so whats the rating of both fighter?
john is rating 1 and billy is 0?

and John got KOed by another fighter Zack, who also had KO victory in his debut-bout.

what’s the rating of John and Zack?

thanks for your attention.

John KO Billy => John 0.034, Billy = 0.006

Then Zack KO John => Zack 0.045, John 0.022, Billy 0.005

which part of the algorithm description explain this?

and before Zack KO John, Zack is also 0.034? or it's much complicate than my imagination?

BoxRec seeds a boxer by 3 prior bouts with result 0.05 against

an opponent with rating of 1 for connected boxers.
an opponent with rating of 1/6 for boxers with at least 1 win.
an opponent with rating of 1/20 else.

John had 0.034 before his bout against Zack - and Zack had no rating before his first bout.

Zack's win against John changes the ratings of all boxers including Billy's.

Zack's first rating is 0.045, John goes down from 0.034 to 0.022 and Billy goes down from 0.006 to 0.005.

Every boxer has a rating at time of each of his bouts.

Every added or changed result influences all ratings of all boxers at time of all of their bouts.

----------------
can I know the formula which determines the rating?

first fight
both debut fighter, fight ends with KO
winner John -0.034
loser Billy -0.006

second fight, fight ends with KO
winner Zack from 0 to 0.045
loser John from 0.034 to 0.022
and Billy from 0.006 to 0.005

much appreciated

So it's basically a complicated numbers game that in an alltime ranking Alfio Righettie who won 36 and lost only twice is rated below Salvatore Ruggirelo (70 losses), Giovanni Martin (20 losses), Giuseppe Spalla (33 losses), and Italo Colonnelo (30 losses)? Sad. :box: :D
