Serhii Bohachuk-Mykal Fox nearly done deal for May 17

Serhii Bohachuk will remain active this spring while in pursuit of a world title shot.

The top-rated WBC junior middleweight contender is set to return to the ring May 17 at Commerce (California) Casino against Mykal Fox, Tom Loeffler—Bohachuk’s promoter—told BS in confirming a report on the matchup.

Ukraine’s Bohachuk 25-2 (24 KOs)—who lives and trains in Los Angeles—aims to bolster his chances to fight for a world title by year’s end with the outcome. He last fought on December 21, when he stopped late replacement Ishmael Davis in the sixth round in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

The slot was originally reserved for Bohachuk to face former WBA titlist Israil Madrimov on the undercard of the Oleksandr Usyk-Tyson Fury world heavyweight championship. Madrimov withdrew due to illness, and later resurfaced in a subsequent unanimous decision defeat to interim WBC titleholder Vergil Ortiz on February 22 in Riyadh.

Bohachuk was far more competitive in his memorable clash with Ortiz. Their 12-round Fight of the Year contender saw Ortiz survive two knockdowns to earn a majority decision and take the interim title from Bohachuk last August 9 in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Fox, 24-4 (5 KOs) has won two straight to snap a three-fight skid. One of the defeats among that infamous run was his highly dubious split decision in favor of Gabriel Maestre in an August 2021 that caused industry-wide outrage.

The 29-year-old, 6’3” southpaw from the greater Washington D.C. area most recently outpointed Yaniel Alvarez over six rounds last November 9 in nearby Hanover, Maryland.

Additional details for the May 17 show will come in due time.

However, Boxing Scene was informed that the undercard will include fast-rising featherweight contender Omar Trinidad, 18-0-1 (13 KOs). An opponent was not yet determined for the 29-year-old Angeleno, who is the No. contender to current IBF featherweight titlist Angelo Leo.

The hope is for the pair of 360 Promotions contenders to both land title shots with wins in May.

Serhii Bohachuk-Mykal Fox set for May 17 in Commerce, California

Ukraine’s Serhii Bohachuk is to fight Mykal Fox on May 17 at the Commerce Casino Events Center in Commerce, California.

The junior-middleweight contender most recently fought in December when he defeated Britain’s Ishmael Davis in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, and following the defeat inflicted by Vergil Ortiz Jnr in August the 29 year old is continuing to rebuild.

There will also be a featherweight contest between Omar Trinidad and the Nicaraguan Alexander Espinoza, and the WBO super-flyweight champion Mizuki Hiruta of Japan defends her title against her mandatory challenger, Argentina’s Carla Ayelen Merino.

“We’re very excited to announce our May 17 event at the Commerce Casino Events Center featuring three of the best fighters in the world in outstanding match-ups,” said Tom Loeffler, whose 360 Promotions is overseeing the promotion headlined by Bohachuk’s fight with the 29-year-old Fox.

“Serhii Bohachuk, Omar Trinidad and Mizuki Hiruta. With our acclaimed monthly Hollywood Fight Nights series, 360 Promotions has become the home for can’t miss boxing events from coast-to-coast.”

Mykal Fox ready to take Serhii Bohachuk's mometum

Mykal “Myke” Fox is no stranger to taking difficult fights, and he will have another against hard-hitting junior middleweight contender Serhii Bohachuk on Saturday at the Commerce Casino in Commerce, California.

The 10-round bout will headline a 360 Promotions card on UFC Fight Pass.

Fox, 24-4 (5 KOs), 29, will make his official junior middleweight debut, though his last fight in November saw him fight at a catchweight slightly above the welterweight limit. Fox is from Forestville, Maryland, and trains with his father Troy out of “Sugar” Ray Leonard’s gym in Landover, Maryland.

Fox, as an up-and-comer, defeated unbeaten 2016 Olympic gold medalist Fazliddin Gaibnazarov in 2019. Then, in 2021, Fox seemed to outpoint Gabriel Maestre thanks to a sound performance and a knockdown, only for one of the worst decisions in modern boxing to award Maestre the win instead.

An opportunity like Saturday’s is what Fox has been waiting for. Bohachuk, 25-2 (24 KOs), is in the mix for big fights in the future thanks to his impressive record and all-action style.

“I’m trying to take his momentum,” Fox told BS. “I'm not worried about his feelings.”

Fox has won two straight after a career-worst three-fight losing streak, with the Maestre bout sandwiched in the middle. In 2022, Egidijus Kavaliauskas, a former opponent of Terence Crawford and Vergil Ortiz Jnr (Kavaliauskas was even able to hurt both of them) defeated Fox by wide unanimous decision, knocking him down twice. Bohachuk and Kavaliauskas are both big punchers, but Fox went on to explain what makes the Ukrainian Bohachuk unique.

“I think Bohachuk tries to break you,” Fox said. “He doesn't knock people clean out. Over time, he's trying to break you by coming forward. He's always trying to push the pace.”

Fox has never been stopped. He has also been in several high-profile camps, including sparring with Gervonta Davis. Fox talked about the mental make-up you have to have leading into a fight like this. Especially when facing Bohachuk, 25-2 (24 KOs), 30, who is known for not making it to the final bell.

“It's a conversation you have with yourself,” Fox said. “He's looking to bring a fight. The best thing you do is stick to your game plan. Do what I do, if not, you know, we start getting into playing his game.”

Fox is sparring young, rangy fighters in camp to prepare for Bohachuk.

“The biggest thing, too, is that Bohachuk is about six feet tall,” Fox said. “So, these guys are around that height. So, training for the dimensions they fight behind that jab, and they have that energy you have before you turn 26 or 27.”

One of the young up-and-comers who helped Fox get ready for this fight is welterweight Benjamin Johnson. Johnson, trained by Lamont Roach Snr, has stopped each of his four professional opponents in the first round to this point. Fox said that the long arms and good jab of Johnson made him an exceptional sparring partner.

Johnson holds Fox in high regard, too.

“He's a veteran who knows how to use his range,” Johnson told BS. “He knows what to do. He has a chin, he has got the drive, he has everything. He has all the tools to be a problem.”

Fox, who is promoted by Jeter Promotions, has a strong self-belief that a fight some might be looking at as a tune-up fight for Bohachuk will be a chance for him to steal the spotlight.

“I have been here before,” Fox said. “I know that is cliche. I see what they say about him and everything like that. They talk about what he's done and things like that, but he has to do it to me.”

Serhii Misses Weight — Tonight’s Hollywood Headliner Gets Messy Before It Starts

Serhii Bohachuk (25-2, 24 KOs) missed weight by a mile Friday night — clocking in at 159.4 lbs — for his scheduled junior middleweight fight against Mykal Fox (28-4, 5 KOs).

The main event headlines tonight’s Hollywood Fight Nights card at Commerce Casino in Los Angeles, streaming live on DAZN (10:00 p.m. ET / 7:00 p.m. PT / 3:00 a.m. UK).

Fox made the 154 lb limit. Bohachuk didn’t even try. Bohachuk is ranked #1 WBC at 154. The former WBC interim 154-lb champion Bohachuk is coming off a sixth-round stoppage victory over Ishmael Davis on December 21st in Riyadh.

Being matched against the former welterweight Mykal Fox seems like a waste of time. Fox had struggled at 147, losing three straight fights shortly before moving up to 154. He’s beaten a couple of no-name, lower-level fighters since moving up, but he’s nowhere near the level of Bohachuk.

For Fox to go from fighting 3-5-2 level opponents to taking on Serhii, it’s not going to end well for him.

Fight Card & Weights
Serhii Bohachuk 159.4 vs. Mykal Fox 154.4
Omar Trinidad 125.8 vs. Alexander Espinoza 128.4
Mizuki Hiruta 114.6 vs. Carla Ayelen Merino 114.2
Abel Mejia 130.6 vs. Antonio Dunton El Jr 130.8
Guadalupe Medina 104.6 vs. Maria Micheo Santizo 105
Eduardo Diaz 150.8 vs. Michael Meyers 149.4
Pablo Rubio Jr 126.4 vs. Alfredo Cruz 127.8
Jocelyn Camarillo 107.4 vs. Qianyue Zhao 106.8

Fox will always be taller than his opponents no matter what weight he is in.
