Serhii Bohachuk-Mykal Fox nearly done deal for May 17
Serhii Bohachuk will remain active this spring while in pursuit of a world title shot.
The top-rated WBC junior middleweight contender is set to return to the ring May 17 at Commerce (California) Casino against Mykal Fox, Tom Loeffler—Bohachuk’s promoter—told BS in confirming a report on the matchup.
Ukraine’s Bohachuk 25-2 (24 KOs)—who lives and trains in Los Angeles—aims to bolster his chances to fight for a world title by year’s end with the outcome. He last fought on December 21, when he stopped late replacement Ishmael Davis in the sixth round in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
The slot was originally reserved for Bohachuk to face former WBA titlist Israil Madrimov on the undercard of the Oleksandr Usyk-Tyson Fury world heavyweight championship. Madrimov withdrew due to illness, and later resurfaced in a subsequent unanimous decision defeat to interim WBC titleholder Vergil Ortiz on February 22 in Riyadh.
Bohachuk was far more competitive in his memorable clash with Ortiz. Their 12-round Fight of the Year contender saw Ortiz survive two knockdowns to earn a majority decision and take the interim title from Bohachuk last August 9 in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Fox, 24-4 (5 KOs) has won two straight to snap a three-fight skid. One of the defeats among that infamous run was his highly dubious split decision in favor of Gabriel Maestre in an August 2021 that caused industry-wide outrage.
The 29-year-old, 6’3” southpaw from the greater Washington D.C. area most recently outpointed Yaniel Alvarez over six rounds last November 9 in nearby Hanover, Maryland.
Additional details for the May 17 show will come in due time.
However, Boxing Scene was informed that the undercard will include fast-rising featherweight contender Omar Trinidad, 18-0-1 (13 KOs). An opponent was not yet determined for the 29-year-old Angeleno, who is the No. contender to current IBF featherweight titlist Angelo Leo.
The hope is for the pair of 360 Promotions contenders to both land title shots with wins in May.
