What punch was it?

Post by foggyneedham »

So I am correct presuming it was that uppercut in the 11th round of fight 2 that caused Watsons condition (just 1 punch) because looking at the stoppage in the 12th not much really got through to Watson to make things worse or is it more of damage caused along the course of his career which built up to this moment I.e. It was already underlying issue?

The uppercut appeared to do the damage, from what I remember Watson wasn’t right when the bell went in the 12th

11th round uppercut and his head hitting the rope.

He doesn’t respond to the cornermen or the referee when told to walk to the corner or the middle of the ring and he also doesn’t lift his hands after he gets up. I’m no doctor obviously but my opinion is that after he gets knocked down and landing with his head hitting into the ropes is where the brain damage occurs but obviously after he leaves the ring it gets worse as after that he can’t walk to the degree he did at the end of the fight. But yeah whenever I’m watching the end of that fight and I see him get up and suddenly isn’t responding and when the ref calls them to the middle he just stands with his hands by his sides in the corner I do think ‘he’s brain damaged already.’

I think it is difficult to attribute these situations to one, isolated blow.

Even if you can, it has to be judged in the context of what came before.

For instance, it is unlikely Watson would have been knocked down like that (and banged his head) with the same shot in the first round of the fight. Even if he had, he would have most likely recovered.

It is the accumulation of punches, increased dehydration and ongoing loss of fluid around the brain that leaves fighters increasingly tragically vulnerable.
