Bektemir Melikuziev-Darius Fulghum set for May 30 in Las Vegas

Golden Boy Promotions will return to Las Vegas with a pivotal crossroads bout featuring its top two super middleweights.

BS has confirmed that Bektemir Melekuziev and Darius Fulghum are on course to meet atop a May 30 DAZN show from Virgin Hotels Las Vegas. Golden Boy has a venue hold on the off-strip locale, which is expected to be approved during the next Nevada State Athletic Commission monthly agenda hearing on April 30 at state headquarters in Las Vegas.

The schedule addition puts major shows in town on back-to-back nights. Premier Boxing Champions (PBC) will host a Prime Video quadrupleheader one night later from Michelob ULTRA Arena featuring former titlists Caleb Plant and Jermall Charlo in separate super middleweight bouts.

Wins by Plant and Charlo are expected to lead to their colliding to fight for Plant’s interim WBA super middleweight title.

The winner of Melikuziev-Fulghumcould will head down the path to eventually challenge for that same belt. Melikuziev, 15-1 (10 KOs), and Fulghum, 14-0 (12 KOs), are rated at No. 3 and 4, respectively, at 168lbs by the WBA. The bout is expected to serve as an eliminator of sorts, given Golden Boy’s tight-knit relationship with the sanctioning body.

Uzbekistan’s Melikuziev – who trains out of Joel Diaz’s facility in Indio, California – has won eight in a row and has beaten every opponent he has faced as a pro.

The lone hiccup endured by Melikuziev, a 2016 Olympic silver medalist, was a shocking June 2021 knockout defeat against Gabe Rosado. The setback was avenged less than two years later, when Melikuziev won a landslide 10-round decision.

A 29-year-old southpaw, Melikuziev has since added wins over Alantez Fox, Pierre Dibombe and David Stevens to push closer to title contention.

Houston’s Fulghum has stopped his last two opponents after being extended the 10-round distance twice in a three-fight span.

A 28-year-old contender who holds a nursing degree from Prairie View A&M University, Fulghum has been moved at an aggressive pace in his less than four years as a pro. He was tested in a January 2024 decision win over Fox, which ended a seven-fight knockout streak. He was also taken 10 rounds in a unanimous decision win over Vaughn Alexander last June 27 in Indio.

Fulghum has since rediscovered his home run swing in early knockout victories in his past two starts. He blasted out Chris Pearson inside of three rounds last November 2 at the same arena, then took care of Winfred Harris Jnr. in less than four rounds on February 15 at Honda Center in Anaheim, California.

DARIUS FULGHUM VS. BEKTEMIR MELIKUZIEV WBA TITLE ELIMINATOR SET FOR MAY 30 IN LAS VEGAS

Golden Boy Promotions is pitting its top super middleweight contenders against each other to identify who they’ll push further.

Darius Fulghum (14-0, 12 KOs) and Bektemir Melikuziev (15-1, 10 KOs) are expected to square off in a 12-round WBA world title eliminator on May 30 in a main event matchup at the Virgin Hotels in Las Vegas.

“It’s a fight that we wanted and a fight that made the most sense, and now, the time is here,” Fulghum told The Ring in an interview. “We’re both Golden Boy guys and it was an easy fight to make. It will really show who is Golden Boy’s top guy in a stacked 168-pound division, and give them the full reins to push the winner. There are a lot of big fights to be made in the division.”

The Ring has also learned that middleweight contender Eric Priest (15-0, 8 KOs) is set to be showcased on the Fulghum-Melikuziev card, which hasn’t been formally announced yet.

Melikuziev is ranked third by the WBA and Fulghum is rated fourth. The winner would inch closer to challenging current Ring, WBA, WBC, and WBO 168-pound champion Canelo Alvarez, who faces IBF title holder William Skull in an undisputed title fight on May 4 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

The matchup between Fulghum and Melikuziev comes one day before WBA interim champion Caleb Plant headlines a show against Jose Armando Resendiz at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas. Jermall Charlo will fight Thomas LaManna in the co-main event, and if Plant and Charlo both win, the expectation is for them to fight each other later this year.

Fulghum – who holds a nursing degree from Prairie View A&M University – said he plans on being ringside for the PBC show the day after his fight to study his potential next opponents.

Fulghum, a 28-year-old from Houston, last fought in February and scored a fourth-round stoppage win against Winfred Harris Jr. Fulghum, a 2018 National Golden Gloves winner and a participant of the 2020 United States Olympic Team Trials, turned professional in 2021. Fulghum put the super middleweight division on notice with an active 2024 campaign, beating Alantez Fox, Cristian Olivas, Vaughn Alexander, and Christopher Pearson.

Melikuziev, a 29-year-old southpaw and 2016 Olympics silver medalist from Uzbekistan, is coming off a nail-biting split decision win against David Stevens in November. Melikuziev's lone career loss came against Gabriel Rosado courtesy of a shocking one-punch knockout in 2021. “Bek The Bully” avenged the defeat with a dominant decision win in 2023 against Rosado and is riding an eight-fight winning streak.

Darius Fulghum's trainer: A win over 'Bek The Bully' elevates him to contender

Darnell Pierce, Darius Fulghum's trainer, believes his fighter will establish himself among the best in the super middleweight division on Friday.

Fulghum faces Bektemir “Bek the Bully” Melikuziev on Friday at the Theater at Virgin Hotels in Las Vegas. The fight is a WBA super middleweight title eliminator that will be broadcast on DAZN.

Fulghum won the 2020 Olympic Trials at heavyweight. He was unable to qualify for the Olympics due to restrictions around the COVID-19 pandemic. Fulghum, 14-0 (12 KOs), turned professional in December 2021 and is working his way down to the super middleweight division. Pierce was candid when asked about Melikuziev, as he believes Fulghum's mentality and mental focus will be the key to victory.

“Good question,” Pierce told BS when asked his thoughts on Melikuziev. “I think [Melikuziev] can be dangerous in spots, but I don't believe he's the complete fighter that Darius is, and that's why a lot of his training and a lot of this camp, has been more about mental focus, discipline and locking in without having those dead moments of falling asleep in the ring.”

Melikuziev, 15-1 (10 KOs), turned professional in 2019 to a lot of excitement. A fast-tracked fighter from Shoimbek, Uzbekistan, who trained with the Diaz Brothers in Indio, California. In 2021, that excitement was halted as Gabriel Rosado knocked him out. Melikuziev, now on an eight-fight winning streak, is coming off an underwhelming split-decision victory over David Stevens in November. For Melikuziev, he needs a statement that he belongs at the top of the division, as most believed he would end up there early in his professional days. Pierce isn’t paying any attention to Melikuziev’s last fight.

“You don't prepare for the worst version of a person that I see. I prepare for the best possible version of the person,” Pierce said. “So, rather than training, hoping that he will fatigue, we train knowing that he has the potential to be dangerous early. So, we're training for that guy more than we're training for the guy who might gas out later in the fight.”

Being an underdog is nothing new to Fulghum, who was the No. 8 seed at the Olympic Trials when he won the tournament. Still, Fulghum, 28, of Houston has never been the underdog in a pro fight. Pierce sees this as a moment for Fulghum to break out and make a name for himself.

“I've been waiting on the opportunity for Darius to be the underdog, because I feel like the boxing world, outside of the small circle of people who are really into boxing, they don't know Darius’ name,” Pierce said. “I think this is the first time he'll be in the ring with an opponent that, if he goes out and asserts himself the same way that he has in the rest of his fights in his professional career, it'll finally put the boxing world on notice and say, ‘Okay, we might need to pay attention to figure out who this guy is, because he going to be here a while.’”

fulghum worth a healthy bet as underdog i think, he is so much naturally bigger and bek not been impressive for a while. bek needs space to spam his counter left to the body so if someone keeps on him could be a hard night

BEKTEMIR MELIKUZIEV WARY, BUT UNCONVINCED UNDEFEATED DARIUS FULGHUM CAN TAKE HIS POWER

Bektemir Melikuziev has rebuilt himself into a credible contender in the super middleweight division since Gabe Rosado shockingly knocked him out almost four years ago.

The strong southpaw from Uzbekistan takes an eight-fight winning streak into his 10-round fight Friday night against undefeated Darius Fulghum. DAZN will stream Melikuziev-Fulghum as the main event of a Golden Boy Promotions card from Virgin Hotels Las Vegas (9 p.m. ET; 2 a.m. GMT).

Houston’s Fulghum (14-0, 12 KOs) has pressed Oscar De La Hoya and his team to secure this high-stakes fight for quite some time. The motivated Melikuziev (15-1, 10 KOs) assured Fulghum he made a matchmaking mistake in choosing a fearless fighter still hellbent on proving his loss to Rosado was a fluke.

"Darius is a great boxer," Melikuziev stated during the "CAMP HOUSE" series streamed on Golden Boy's YouTube channel. "But there is no person at 168 who can take my power."

Another fringe American contender, David Stevens, took Melikuziev’s power in their November 2 bout at Virgin Hotels Las Vegas.

Melikuziev won their 10-round bout by split decision, but only because judge Chris Migliore scored their fight far differently, 116-112 for Stevens, than Dave Moretti and Zachary Young, who favored Melikuziev by respective scores of 118-110 and 117-111.

Unlike Fulghum, Stevens had a loss on his record, a first-round knockout defeat to Joeshon James (then 7-0-2), when he met Melikuziev. Fulghum is unbeaten but unproven in Melikuziev’s mind, the type of opponent he must impressively beat if the 2016 Olympic silver medalist is to eventually secure a super middleweight world title shot.

"I don’t like to talk too much," Melikuziev said. "But with the fights like this, I can show my skills to all the people and show that I'm at [the] elite level, that I can produce the great, exciting fights for the crowd, and that's what I wanna do. In this weight class, I haven't yet showed my best. And May 30, I will show the best of 'Bek The Bully.'”

While uncertain of what to make of Fulghum, Melikuziev's catastrophic defeat to Rosado rather painfully taught him an invaluable lesson. Melikuziev avenged his loss to Philadelphia’s Rosado (26-17-1, 15 KOs, 1 NC), whom he beat by unanimous decision in their 10-round rematch in April 2023, but he will approach Fulghum respectfully.

"At this level, every single opponent is dangerous," Melikuziev said. "One punch changes everything, so you can plan, you can think about something. But once it gets to the fight, things can go absolutely differently."

yet again fulghum gets stunned but he recovers fast and fights through it. good round, close i think bek landed better but he has that soggy body language that might work against him

last round coming, not sure who will win this one. bek was deducted a point for holding earlier, hope that isnt the difference

bek landed the better shots throughout this fight, much cleanier flusher work. stung big D many times. but he often looked gassed and soggy, and was nose bleeding for many rounds. fulgham with size and strength up close, where bek was more limited. despite less skill and defense he had plenty of success himself. we will see what the judges like

about halfway through this was really looking to swing in fulghum's favour, but bek got some 2nd wind and fulghum slowed just enough to give bek the breathing room and space for the left hand, bek was able to restabilize himself and that 12th round kd was an exclamation point
