Super-welterweight star Josh Kelly faces WBC Latino champ Flavius Biea on June 6

World star Josh Kelly eyes statement win over dangerous Flavius Biea at the Utilita Arena Newcastle
The world class Josh Kelly will square off with Flavius Biea in Newcastle on June 6, live and free on Channel 5.

Wasserman Boxing delivers Fast and Furious in association with Ladbrokes and Infinitum this summer as the sharp-shooting Kelly looks to tame Biea, the hard-punching Romanian.

Biea holds no fear and had no hesitation in accepting the offer to face Kelly on Friday, June 6, at the Utilita Arena Newcastle, when a string of others repeatedly avoided ‘Pretty Boy’.

Victory for the Sunderland star will put him firmly back in the frame to fight for a world title, while Biea – the reigning WBC Latino champion – knows he can catapult himself into major title contention with a shock win, in front of the nation on Channel 5.

The hard-as-nails Biea is on a 12-fight winning streak and his confidence is sky-high but in Kelly he faces one of the sharpest punching fighters in the world and the former Olympian plans to remind Chris Eubank Junior, Conor Benn and the rest of his rivals, what he is all about.

Wasserman Boxing’s return to the North East also includes the fastest rising prospect in British boxing, Tom Welland, the return of Felix Cash, Dan Toward and many more.

Josh Kelly defeated Ishmael Davis in his last fight, last September. The 31-year-old said: “Biea has shown he’s got what plenty of others in my division haven’t – the minerals to step up and fight me.
“You have to respect his warrior mentality but there are levels to this game, and on June 6, I will show him, and everyone watching on Channel 5, why I am world class.

“Biea will no doubt think he’ll be able to walk me down, but I’ll make him miss, and then I’ll make him pay.

“It will be beautiful and brutal.”

Flavius Biea said: “I have absolutely no fear in facing Josh Kelly.

“I respect him and his skills but make no mistake about it, I am coming to win on June 6 and take away all those big fights he so desperately wants.

“Kelly says he’s avoided, and people are running scared, but not me.”

Kalle Sauerland, Global Head of Boxing at Wasserman, said: “The heat is on, this June as we bring a compelling clash of styles to Channel 5.

“Josh Kelly is a world class operator and on the cusp of humongous fights, but he can afford no slip-ups against Biea.

“Kelly has devastating speed, Matrix-like reflexes and elite level ring IQ, while Biea has been willing to take on this challenge, when plenty of others haven’t – and that makes him extremely dangerous.

“This fight is laced with jeopardy for Kelly, but with home support in the North East, we expect him to make a massive statement.”

Josh Kelly to return to ring on June 6

Josh Kelly will square off with Flavius Biea in Newcastle on June 6, airing in the United Kingdom on Channel 5.

Kelly, 16-1-1 (8 KOs), is a popular British fighter and an Olympian who has fought at middleweight, junior middleweight and welterweight. His lone loss was a sixth-round stoppage at the hands of David Avanesyan, best known for his own defeats inside the distance to Terence Crawford and Jaron “Boots” Ennis.

The 31-year-old Kelly claims that those in his weight division are avoiding him, and he praised Biea for taking the fight: "Biea has shown he’s got what plenty of others in my division haven’t – the minerals to step up and fight me,” Kelly said in a press release.

Biea, 24-1 (12 KOs), has won his last 12 fights but against no world-class opponents. The 35-year-old Romanian's best win is a 12-round split decision over Juan Jose Velasco, who has fought and lost by stoppage to Regis Prograis, Mario Barrios and Callum Walsh.

“I have absolutely no fear in facing Josh Kelly,” Biea said in a press release. "I respect him and his skills, but make no mistake about it, I am coming to win on June 6 and take away all those big fights he so desperately wants.”

Kelly, a 31-year-old from Sunderland, says the fight will be “beautiful and brutal.”

“We expect him to make a massive statement,” Kalle Sauerland, Wasserman’s Global Head of Boxing, said of Kelly.

The card is promoted by Wasserman Boxing and includes other British prospects and title hopefuls such as featherweight Tom Welland. Middleweight Felix Cash is also due to return from last year's loss to Tyler Denny.

It’s the night before. This is the Friday night.

Wardley - Miller & Simpson - Zucco both clash on Saturday 7th.

That has to be a first in possibly world boxing never mind just Britain. Two stadium fights on the same night.

And both in towns not normally associated with Boxing. I love the UK fight scene.

Combined, Barnsley & Ipswich have a lower population that Croydon.

I hope the weather is nice & both events are a big success. Would love to see more of this around the UK & Ireland.

Places like Croydon won't back their own like the smaller places do. World champions could live anonymously there.

That was my point, Mickey.

It's great when smaller towns produce a local hero.

A Mate of mine who's been abroad for 30 years recently moved back to near Ipswich where he grew up. He's going to the Wardley fight & is buzzing for it. He's not even a massive boxing fan.

Never mind the actual fight, the most interesting thing to emerge from Biea's record is that Darleys Perez, who fought Anthony Crolla at lightweight, is still going, fought Biea as a middle in 2024, and is now cruiserweight. Next stop is surely a run at heavyweight and a WBA eliminator with Manuel Charr.

LUCAS ROEHRIG SIGNS PROMOTIONAL CONTRACT WITH WASSERMAN

Cruiserweight prospect Lucas Roehrig has signed a promotional contract with Wasserman.

The 21-year-old, who is trained and managed by former WBA super-middleweight world champion George Groves, made his debut in December and has since moved to 4-0 (2).

All four of those outings have come under different promotional banners but it has now been announced that he has signed terms with Wasserman.

It means Roehrig will be working alongside Wasserman’s global head of boxing Kalle Sauerland, one of Groves’ former promoters, who was instrumental in the Londoner’s world title success and subsequent run to the final of the World Boxing Super Series in 2018.

It has also been announced that the first fight of Roehrig’s new deal will take place at the Newcastle Arena on Friday, June 6 on the card headlined by Josh Kelly’s fight with 24-1 Romanian Flavius Biea.

Roehrig, considered one of the most promising contenders in Britain at 200lbs, will face 7-3-2 Frenchman Sofiane Quoit, who has lost just once in his last seven.

‘Lights Out’ Roehrig, meanwhile, will be returning to the ring for the first time since his six-round UD against Missouri’s Brian Jones at Stamford Bridge on April 4.

This guy has stunk out the joint on too many occasions. Who really cares who he fights. We know he's getting exposed again like he did vs Robinson and Ava when he steps up.

'World Star.....', are you sure, pal?

A BTec Mayweather and his list of opponents are poor......still. He has ability but definitely more hype than anything else.

Of the two half decent ones, one stopped him and the other, a draw.
