How good is HW Leo Atang?

Post by Controversial »

Recently turned pro at HW, signed with Eddie Hearn, only 18 years old. I don’t know much about him, likely to do much?

I saw him up in Fort William a while ago and he was very impressive. Since then he's won gold at World Boxing's Youth World championships.

the world boxing youth championship was a bit of a joke for his division, only 4 shw entrants, meaning they got a medal just for showing up. and the korean he beat looked like an utter novice - seriously, has a boxer as poor as this korean ever been in a world championship final? 2 fights for leo to win gold, while adam olaniyan had to win 5 fights to get shw gold at the iba youth worlds

but he had really good runs at the euro championships and other tough events. think hes won something like 34 of his last 35. lots of stoppages. looks the business for a youth, explosive and with killer instinct. but when they turn pro really young it can be harder to say - some just mature way earlier and then dont keep improving as much. others keep going. defo a hot prospect to watch at least

There’s one person on here who’s been following Leo closely for a few years now so they’d be best placed to come back to you.

In my opinion he’s a really exciting talent but will need plenty of fights and shouldn’t be rushed. Loads of potential.

I've seen just about all of his fights. He's very, very good. He's not fully matured yet so will probably get unfairly compared to Itauma but I suppose that just comes with the job. He's been sparring top pros for the last couple of years. The plan is to build him slowly. I'm just ready to defend his trainer.... I know everyone will jump on him the second Leo puts a foot wrong! Leo is his third European champ from scratch alongside loads of other champions and he's a friend of mine.

The semi was a really hard fight. Leo was boxing a year up in both his European campaigns. He is still a youth now, they turned him over because there was nobody to fight. No entries in the youth championships.

I think it’s a tricky one as someone who is an excellent amateur trainer doesn’t necessarily mean they have the ability to improve someone into a top pro.

Rutherford at Birtley had loads of top amateurs but I don’t think he had the ability to make them into very good pros. Most of the guys who turned over with him (and stayed with him) were too easy to hit and I didn’t think they ever got proper leverage into their shots.

Hopefully Leo’s trainer is able to bridge that gap. :TU:

Ash is a lot younger and very much up to date with the current trends. He's only mid 30's and started the gym about 8 years ago in a very bold move. Everyone, including myself, thought he was mad. He's in pro gyms every week and has a good relationship with a lot of the big name trainers. I would say he's very different to a traditional am trainer, he has always matched his guys tough and loves hard sparring.

Yea, it’s always interesting when an 18 year old turns pro…

Was there much thought about just trying to go senior amature path? Would he be a chance at making the Olympic team or is there some quality above him that would still be there in 3 years?

Hope he does well, but incredibly hard to stay active, in fights that help development at all, without risking a bananaskin

He won't be a senior until next January. He is an 07 kid. He was put on GB as soon as it was possible and his face certainly fitted down there.

Interesting, I wish him well, always good to have a new HW prospect on the scene. How tall/heavy is he, hard to judge on the clips I’ve seen.

I'd say about 6'3 and 16st.

I hope so. He should be, he doesn't look fully matured. He still is like a youth.

He looked about the same hight as Hearn when they announced the signing, or a bit taller. So, I'd assumed he was taller than 6' 3"?

Olaniyan lost last night in the Irish final in the seniors highlighting the fine line of when to turn pro.
