Brian Norman Jnr vs. Devin Haney verbally agreed on for later this year

WBO welterweight champion Brian Norman Jnr has verbally agreed to fight former two-division champion Devin Haney later this year, an industry official told Boxing Scene Wednesday.

The 24-year-old Norman, who is coming off a destructive fifth round knockout of Jin Sasaki last week in Japan, has informed his promoter Top Rank that he wants to pursue the bout with Haney that is intended to be staged by Saudi Arabia boxing financier Turki Alalshikh.

Those connected to the proposed bout say that it is being targeted to occur in November at a site yet to be finalized. Georgia’s Norman, 28-0 (22 KOs), has expressed his desire for the bout to be fought at the standard 147lbs limit without a catchweight or next day weigh-in limit added.

Haney, 32-0 (15 KOs), who is coming off a May 2 unanimous decision victory over former titleholder Jose Ramirez in New York’s Times Square, expressed interest in fighting Norman after attempts to stage bouts against recent welterweight champion Jaron “Boots” Ennis and current 140lbs champion Teofimo Lopez fell through in recent weeks.

Haney’s father/trainer/manager Bill Haney spoke to BS about the Norman fight on Tuesday, saying “You guys [Team Norman] said that you wanted more [to fight Ennis]. Well, guess what? We know what your ‘more’ is, and if you want that to fight Devin ‘The Dream’ Haney,’ then you can get that next.”

In addition to his financial backing of the bout, Alalshikh’s involvement might be necessary anyways, as Top Rank’s current broadcast deal with ESPN expires on July 26. Alalshikh owns a minority stake in DAZN.

Bet when it comes down to it , Hainey snr will say it can't be done , because Norman wants more , than he wanted against Boots , but realisticly it will come out he refused dehydration clauses , , weight limits , and refused to sign the condition he can't train for the fight , after argy bargy , it may happen then Haney will stink the place out with Run , grab , hold , Run grab , hold ,, rinse and repeat

TURKI ALALSHIKH: BRIAN NORMAN VS. DEVIN HANEY WILL HEADLINE RIYADH SEASON SHOW IN NOVEMBER

His Excellency Turki Alalshikh has hinted at putting together a super card in November.

Now, that card may have its main event.

Alalshikh announced on X that undefeated WBO welterweight champion Brian Norman Jr. will defend his title against undefeated former two-division champion Devin Haney on a Riyadh Season card. The date and venue will be announced at a later date.

Norman (28-0, 22 KOs) is coming off a Knockout of the Year contender against Jin Sasaki on June 19 in Japan. The hard-hitting welterweight from Georgia dropped Sasaki twice in the first round before dropping him once more with a devastating left hook in the fifth round to earn the victory in enemy territory and the second defense of his title.

Norman is The Ring’s No. 1 ranked welterweight. Unified IBF and WBA welterweight champion Jaron “Boots” Ennis also holds The Ring belt, though he announced that he’s moving up to junior middleweight in his next fight.

Haney (32-0, 15 KOs), a former undisputed lightweight champion and WBC junior welterweight champion, earned a unanimous decision victory over former unified junior welterweight champion Jose Ramirez on May 2 at Times Square in New York. Haney will be in his first fight at welterweight when he faces Norman.

Alalshikh also named Vergil Ortiz vs. Ennis, Christian Mbilli vs. Lester Martinez, Moses Itauma vs. Martin Bakole and Andy Cruz vs. William Zepeda as fights he was hoping to put together in November during a roundtable interview with The Ring’s Mike Coppinger, Rick Reeno and Ish Hinson.

Great fight. I'm actually very intrigued to see how it plays out.

I know Haney gets a lot of hate, and I'm not a fan either, but respect to him for moving up in weight and once again taking on the top dog in the division in his very first fight there.

Brian Norman Jnr-Devin Haney agreed for November

Brian Norman Jnr and Devin Haney will contest Norman Jnr’s WBO welterweight title in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia on a date to be confirmed in November, according to Turki Alalshikh.

Haney, 26, was being lined up for a rematch with Ryan Garcia but on the same night that he defeated Jose Carlos Ramirez at Times Square in New York, Garcia unexpectedly lost to Rolando “Rolly” Romero.

Negotiations for a potential showdown with the junior welterweight Teofimo Lopez then followed, but they ultimately came to little, whereafter the stock of the 24-year-old Norman Jnr was enhanced by him stopping, in five rounds in Tokyo, Japan, the Japanese contender Jin Sasaki.

With Jaron “Boots” Ennis moving up to junior middleweight, Norman Jnr-Haney perhaps became the most appealing contest that could be made at 147lbs, and presents Haney, the former undisputed lightweight champion, with the opportunity to become a world champion at a third weight.

“In November in Riyadh, Brian Norman Jnr will defend his welterweight title versus Devin Haney on a Riyadh Season card,” Alalshikh posted on social media. “More exciting surprises to come.”

“Three division champion,” Haney posted. “November Inshallah.”

BRIAN NORMAN PAYS FUTURE FOE DEVIN HANEY HIGH COMPLIMENTS: HE'S NEVER DUCKED A FIGHT

Brian Norman Jr. agrees with much of the criticism Devin Haney has endured since he utilized a safe strategy to outbox Jose Ramirez on May 2 in New York's Times Square.

Questioning Haney’s heart based on only one fight, however, is shortsighted, in Norman’s opinion. Haney impressed Norman with how he got off the canvas three times and fought back against Ryan Garcia.

The former undisputed lightweight champion earned even more respect from Norman when he agreed recently to challenge the unbeaten WBO welterweight champion for his title.

Turki Alalshikh announced through his X account Sunday that Norman and Haney have reached an agreement to fight sometime in November in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The date of their 12-round, 147-pound championship clash has yet to be determined.

“Even if he’s gun-shy or whatever, you could never fault his heart,” Norman told The Ring. “Why does he need to fight me? I just came off the biggest knockout of my career, possibly the knockout of the year. My momentum is going high. Why does he need to fight me? So, no matter what, I know he got heart, he got dog in him.

“Even in the Ryan Garcia fight, he was still stepping [to] Ryan Garcia. He wasn’t boxing. He was going at him. So, we can never fault his heart, we can never fault his determination. So, that’s why I just gotta work a million times harder.”

Norman knocked Japanese contender Jin Sasaki unconscious with a picturesque left hook in the fifth round June 19 at Ota City General Gymnasium in Tokyo. The hard-hitting Norman’s vicious knockout caught Alalshikh’s attention and enabled the Conyers, Georgia, native to secure a career-high payday and the highest-profile fight of his career through the head of Riyadh Season.

Haney hoped to fight Garcia again after he defeated Ramirez on The Ring’s pay-per-view show almost two months ago. Rolly Romero ruined that plan by dropping Garcia in the second round and upsetting him by unanimous decision in the 12-round main event that immediately followed Haney’s wide win on the cards over Ramirez, a former WBC/WBO 140-pound champion.

Garcia (24-2, 20 KOs, 1 NC), of Victorville, California, and Haney (32-0, 15 KOs, 1 NC), of Henderson, Nevada, fought for the first time that night in more than a year. The New York State Athletic Commission suspended Garcia for a year and changed the result of their fight in April 2024 to a no-contest because he tested positive for Ostarine, a substance banned by the Voluntary Anti-Doping Association.

Haney’s handlers then thought they had a deal for him to instead face Ring/WBO junior welterweight champ Teofimo Lopez on Aug. 16 at ANB Arena in Riyadh. Negotiations for that fight fell apart after Lopez attacked Alalshikh on social media, which again left Haney seeking his next opponent through no fault of his own.

Norman (28-0, 22 KOs, 1 NC) wasn’t the least bit surprised Haney chose him, despite his spectacular knockout of Sasaki (19-2-1, 7 KOs). Haney can become a world champion in a third division if he beats Norman in the Oakland, California, native’s first fight at the welterweight limit of 147 pounds.

“People try and call [Haney] a duck,” Norman said. “But real deal, sit here and think about it — what fight has he not accepted? Like even with the [Gervonta Davis] stuff, talks only start happening when one of them have a fight coming up and already signed a deal. So, those fights can’t happen. With Shakur Stevenson, of course [Stevenson] said it was a lowball offer, but they still sent something out there. We have never heard of him actually ducking a fight, so people can push that narrative to the side.”

REPORT: MOTHER OF DEVIN HANEY'S DAUGHTER GRANTED TEMPORARY RESTRAINING ORDER, ALLEGES ABUSE

Devin Haney will face a legal battle before he begins to train for his November bout against WBO welterweight champion Brian Norman Jr.

TMZ reported Monday night that Leena Sayed, the mother of Haney's 5-month-old daughter, Khrome, filed for a restraining order last week in Nevada against the former undisputed lightweight champion. A judge granted a temporary order of protection Monday, according to TMZ, and the two parties are due in court July 22.

The judge also ruled that Haney cannot visit his daughter until they come to court on that date.

Sayed alleged Haney pushed her to the ground while she was pregnant with their daughter and abused her on several other occasions over the past 16 months, according to court documents obtained by TMZ.

Haney could not be reached for comment Monday night by The Ring. The 26-year-old Oakland native has agreed recently to challenge Norman (28-0, 22 KOs, 1 NC) in what is expected to be the main event of a Riyadh Season show sometime in November in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

Haney (32-0, 15 KOs, 1 NC), who resides in Henderson, Nevada, most recently unanimously out-pointed Jose Ramirez in a 12-round 143-pound catchweight match May 2 on a card The Ring presented from Times Square in New York.

Brian Norman Jnr: ‘I know I can go even further than this’

Brian Norman Jnr will never take any of his career success for granted.

He also won’t dismiss the hard work he’s put in to reach this point.

Everything is clicking these days for the red-hot WBO welterweight titlist. His highlight-reel fifth-round knockout of Jin Sasaki on June 19 in Tokyo, Japan, is the runaway leader for 2025 Knockout of the Year. It came less than three months after Norman took out Derrieck Cuevas in less than three rounds.

Next up for the 24-year-old from the greater Atlanta, Georgia, area is a November title defense against Devin Haney, 32-0 (15 KOs), in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The bout is Norman’s most high-profile assignment to date and came the old-fashioned way – hard work.

“That’s the most fun part about all of this. You control your own destiny, you control your own fate,” Norman, 28-0 (22 KOs), told BS. “That’s real life. I couldn’t imagine sitting here being the face of Top Rank and things of that nature. But… I put the work in, I put the reps in and I got here the right way.

“I know I can go even farther than this. I’m in control of my own destiny. It’s up to me how far I can take this.”

The run of good fortune is a far cry from the version of Norman when he first signed with Top Rank.

His January 2023 debut with the company came after a ring absence of more than a year. Norman won an eight-round unanimous decision in a workmanlike performance. He added two more wins in 2023, both of which went the distance and neither of which left an impression.

A three-round no-contest with Janelson Bocachica in March 2024 left Norman in a position where it was time to either make a statement or accept whatever the universe had in store for him.

The game-changer came in his very next fight. Norman delivered what was far and away his best performance to that point in a sizzling 10th-round knockout of Giovani Santillan. The win came with the interim WBO welterweight belt, which he’s since upgraded to the full version and defended with a pair of memorable knockouts.

All that he needed to do was realize what it would take for everything to click.

“The biggest lesson I learned along the way – just go out and be myself,” Norman said. “I needed to embrace who I am as a fighter. When I first started fighting on TV, it was all about ‘What do the fans want? Let me go do this, let me go do that.’ As we all saw – because, let’s be real – it wasn’t working. I was forcing things, nothing was coming natural.

“By the time we got to Giovani Santillan, I was comfortable being myself. We saw what happened there. Then with Derrieck Cuevas, same thing and we saw what happened. Jin Sasaki, we see what’s going on.”

Even before talks progressed to face Haney, the team plan was to get Norman back in the ring sometime this fall. It was important to have three title fights on the year, and a big name to go along with that defense coming as a bonus.

For a while, the fight that everyone wanted to see at 147lbs was between Norman and then-lineal, IBF and WBA champ Jaron “Boots” Ennis, 34-0 (30 KOs). It was on the table last year before talks broke down over the fight’s true worth. The matchup never quite became a reality in 2025, less so once Ennis confirmed he was moving up in weight.

Norman and his team didn’t pay it much mind given the task at hand to face Sasaki on the road in Tokyo. As promised, discussion for the next assignment would begin on June 20.

Barely a week later, his fight with Haney was secured. The matchup continues to dominate the headlines more than 24 hours after Turki Alalshikh – whose Riyadh Season group will bankroll the fight – confirmed it was a done deal.

No trash talk was necessary between the boxers once they were in each other’s sights. That’s not a lesson that Norman needed to learn, though.

“You don’t always have to be disrespectful just to have a good fight and build-up to it. People get the game switched up. Errol Spence and Terence Crawford is a good example. Their fans, they had beef and was always trying to start something that wasn’t really there. Them brothers was cool, dapping it up and all that. They got together and delivered a historic event.

“Even right now, I’m not talking bad about anybody. I’m just gonna be me, put my own little flavor, put some peach sauce on it and just sell the fight that way. We don’t need to be disrespectful. All I need to do is go out there and keep catching bodies.”

BRIAN NORMAN JR. EAGER TO DISPROVE PERCEPTION HE'S 'JUST A PUNCHER' VS. DEVIN HANEY

Brian Norman Jr. is confident he will knock out Devin Haney.

The emerging WBO welterweight champion has such faith in his power that Norman (28-0, 22 KOs, 1 NC) expects to knock out every opponent he faces. One of the primary reasons he's thankful that Haney agreed to fight him, however, is because the Conyers, Georgia, native views their bout as a perfect opportunity to earn more respect for his boxing ability.

Norman's knockout of Japan’s Jin Sasaki (19-2-1, 17 KOs) on June 19 at Ota City General Gynasium in Tokyo has drawn praise from throughout the boxing world. His picture-perfect left hook knocked Sasaki unconscious and produced an irrefutable frontrunner for "Knockout of the Year" midway through 2025.

As much as Norman appreciates the recognition and the career-changing payday the Sasaki knockout helped him secure, he feels that his ring IQ, technical skills and other attributes are underrated.

Norman can't wait to put those assets to the test when he meets Haney (32-0, 15 KOs, 1 NC) for a 147-pound championship. Turki Alalshikh announced Sunday on social media that Norman-Haney will take place on a date to be determined as part of a Riyadh Season show in Saudi Arabia.

"Something that people misconstrue about me is they think I'm just a puncher," Norman told The Ring. "That's where y'all wrong. Do you see the composure? You don't think I'm in there thinking? You don't think I'm putting things together. Do you not see the speed that I come with?

"Matter of fact, they don't see the footwork. But that's another reason I love the fact that I'm fighting Devin Haney. He got amazing footwork, definitely top five in the game right now. So, now I can showcase my skills against an established-to-the-game opponent, did this and did that. Now, let's see how I match up with him."

Haney’s boxing ability, intelligence and ring generalship helped him become boxing's first fully unified lightweight champion of the four-belt era.

The Oakland, California, native added the WBC junior welterweight title to his resume by beating Regis Prograis convincingly in December 2023 and remains unbeaten because his majority-decision defeat to Ryan Garcia in April 2024 was changed to no-contest. Garcia tested positive for Ostarine, a banned substance.

Norman admires the heart and determination Haney displayed by getting up from three knockdowns to make it to the final bell against Garcia.

After taking widespread criticism for his extremely cautious approach during a unanimous points victory over former WBC/WBO 140-pound champ Jose Ramirez (29-3, 18 KOs) on May 2 in Times Square, Haney is expected to assert himself early in what will be his first fight at the welterweight limit of 147 pounds. Norman is certain Haney will change that strategy as soon as he feels the 24-year-old champion's power.

"I believe he will try to come out and get his respect," Norman said. "You got the Jose Ramirez thing, plus I'm new in the game, so he'll try to let it be known that he's still here. 'I'm still Devin Haney, still The Dream,' and all that. But just like with everybody else, for some reason when I'm touching 'em, eyes get big and they fight a whole different way."

‘RING IV’ ANNOUNCED FOR NOVEMBER 22 IN RIYADH, SAUDI ARABIA; TO FEATURE BENAVIDEZ-YARDE & HANEY-NORMAN

Turki Alalshikh officially announced the date for “Ring IV” through his X account Monday night.

The Ring’s next pay-per-view show has been scheduled for November 22 at ANB Arena in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. As previously reported by The Ring, the loaded card is set to feature four 12-round world title fights in different divisions.

David Benavidez (30-0, 24 KOs) will defend his WBC light heavyweight title against Anthony Yarde (27-3, 24 KOs). In the bout before Benavidez faces Yarde, Brian Norman Jr. (28-0, 22 KOs, 1 NC) will put his WBO welterweight title on the line versus Devin Haney (32-0, 15 KOs, 1 NC), a former undisputed lightweight champion.

Also November 22, Sam Noakes and Abdullah Mason will square off for the vacant WBO lightweight title.

Noakes (17-0, 15 KOs) is the WBO’s No. 1-ranked contender in the lightweight division. Mason (19-0, 17 KOs) is ranked No. 2 by the WBO.

Noakes and Mason will fight for the WBO belt Keyshawn Davis gave up on the scale June 6, when he came in 4.3 pounds overweight for an optional title defense against Edwin De Los Santos the next night at Scope Arena in Norfolk, Virginia, Davis’ hometown. The Davis-De Los Santos fight was canceled because De Los Santos’ former promoter, Sampson Lewkowicz, considered it too dangerous for the Dominican southpaw to fight someone so much heavier than him.

“Ring IV” could also feature a long-discussed fight to determine boxing’s undisputed junior bantamweight champion. If favored Jesse “Bam” Rodriguez (21-0, 14 KOs), who owns the The Ring and WBC 115-pound crowns, beats WBO champ Phumelela Cafu (11-0-3, 8 KOs) on July 19 in Frisco, Texas, Rodriguez will battle IBF and WBA champ Fernando Martinez (18-0, 9 KOs) on November 22.

A press conference to formally announce “Ring IV” has been scheduled for 1 p.m. ET Friday at Hard Rock Times Square in New York. It will be streamed live on The Ring’s social media channels.

The “Ring IV” press conference will follow the ceremonial weigh-in for “Ring III,” the DAZN Pay-Per-View event scheduled to take place Saturday night at Louis Armstrong Stadium in Queens, New York.

Norman Jr. hip tosses Haney’s security after shirt rip

Brian Norman Jr. defended himself after Devin Haney’s security guard grabbed him by the shirt in a New York City altercation.

Norman and Haney met backstage at Friday’s ceremonial weigh-ins for Turki Alalshikh’s Ring III card at Louis Armstrong Stadium this Saturday night.

Alalshikh recently announced the pair would collide for Norman’s WBO welterweight title during Riyadh Season this November.

Chaos at Weigh-ins

The ‘Ring IV’ meeting is already causing a stir without the need for the near brawl that ensued when the two came face-to-face.

As the camera coincidentally recorded, Norman and Haney exchanged words before stepping toward each other. As Norman got a little too close to ‘The Dream’ for his security’s liking, Haney’s rangy bodyguard moved in to subdue the world champion.

Pulling Norman’s shirt over his head and ripping it in the process, the man, later revealed to be ‘Big Tank,’ looked to have gotten the better of the 24-year-old.

The Hip Toss Seen Around the World

However, Norman didn’t back off. The fighter, known for his sensational knockout of Jin Sasaki last month, grabbed Tank and hip-tossed him to the ground using only one arm.

The incident, caught on camera for all to see, became a sensation on social media.

Top Rank commentator Crystina Poncher said, “Damn, Devin’s security ripped Brian’s shirt.”

DEVIN HANEY ISN'T INTIMIDATED BY BRIAN NORMAN'S KO WINS: 'THIS IS A WHOLE DIFFERENT LEVEL'

Nowadays, Brian Norman Jr. isn’t interested in needing the help of the judges.

In his last three appearances, the biggest of his career so far, he violently stopped each of his opponents. Jin Sasaki, his June 19 victim, was forced to leave the Ota City General Gymnasium in Tokyo on a stretcher.

In Haney's opinion, however, Norman's skills aren’t comparable to the opponents the Georgia native has faced.

“I’m a show you it’s different levels to this,” Haney told The Ring. “You did good, but this is a whole different level.”

Norman (28-0, 22 KOs), who will be defending his WBO welterweight title against Haney on November 22 at the ANB Arena in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, promises to send his man to the emergency room. Those threats, ultimately, made Haney laugh.

Threats before a big fight are nothing new to the former two-division champ. Similarly, he listened as Jose Ramirez pounded his fists together and promised to do the same. Yet, when the two linked up on May 2 in New York’s Times Square, Ramirez barely laid a glove on him as Haney (32-0, 15 KOs) boxed, danced, and moved his way to a unanimous decision.

Haney doesn’t like to brag ... well, maybe a little. The point is, he doesn't believe he needs to stick his chest out and pat himself on the back. All he wants his naysayers and critics to do is take a look at the number of former world champions he’s faced.

“He’s put on good performances, but against guys we never heard of," Haney continued. "I don’t know one person on his resume.”

BRIAN NORMAN JR. SIGNS MULTI-YEAR CONTRACT EXTENSION WITH TOP RANK

Top Rank has signed WBO welterweight champion Brian Norman Jr. to a multi-year contract extension, it was announced on Wednesday.

The news was released while Norman prepares to make the third defense of his title against Devin Haney on Nov. 22 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

“When I watch Brian Norman Jr., I think of all the legendary welterweights I’ve promoted," said Top Rank boss Bob Arum. "He has the physical tools and maturity required to become a generational fighter.

"We are thrilled to be part of the next phase of Brian’s career, which I believe will see him ascend from world champion to the top of the pound-for-pound list.”

Norman (28-0, 22 KOs) has been tied to Top Rank since signing with the promotional company in December 2022, when he was 22-0.

“I believe in loyalty,” Norman said. “Top Rank believed in me from the start, and I’m proud to keep building with the home team. We’re only getting started.”

After a stretch of workmanlike wins, Norman officially made his mark last year by viciously knocking out Giovani Santillan to win the WBO interim title.

Norman was elevated to full titleholder when former undisputed champion Terence Crawford left the division a year ago. After recovering from hand surgery, he successfully defended the crown this year against Derrieck Cuevas and Jin Sasaki.

His fifth-round stoppage against Sasaki was a sensational win on the road in Japan and one of the leading contenders for knockout of the year.

"It has been a total team effort to get Brian Norman Jr. to where he is today,” said Adrian Clark, CEO of Fighters First Management.

“I must credit Brian Norman Sr., Jolene Mizzone, and the Hall of Fame matchmakers, Brad Goodman and Bruce Trampler. We are excited to continue our partnership with Top Rank.”

Norman, a 24-year-old from Decatur, Georgia, is the second-youngest male champion in the sport.

DraftKings lists Norman as a minus-135 betting favorite to beat the plus-105 underdog Haney.

Norman has not faced a smooth and technical opponent as Haney, who could surprise as a welter.

Ahead of Brian Norman fight, Devin Haney gets WBO No. 1 rating

Devin Haney has received the top rating from the WBO ahead of his November 22 bout against welterweight titleholder Brian Norman Jnr.

It’s not that Haney needed the mandatory position in order to make the fight; it was already official. But Norman-Haney will now count as a mandatory defense of the WBO belt.

Haney, a 26-year-old who lives in Las Vegas, had previously entered the WBO’s welterweight ratings in July at No. 2. He was elevated to No. 1 in the sanctioning body’s latest ratings update, which was released August 21 and reflects results through August 15.

Haney supplanted Alexis Rocha, who had been in the No. 1 spot since February. Rocha, 25-2-1 (16 KOs), is now at No. 2.

Haney, 32-0 (15 KOs), is a former undisputed lightweight champion and also held the WBC belt at 140lbs. In April 2024, he was dropped three times en route to a majority decision loss to Ryan Garcia. That result was subsequently overturned when Garcia tested positive for a banned performance-enhancing drug.

Haney spent a year away and returned this past May in a show in New York City’s Times Square that was designed to set up a rematch with Garcia. Haney won a much-derided unanimous decision over Jose Ramirez in which he focused more on moving his feet than his hands. Garcia, however, lost a decision to Rolando “Rolly” Romero.

Haney-Ramirez was contested at a catchweight of 144lbs; Haney weighed in at 143.

This fight with Norman will be held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, as part of a stacked card headlined by David Benavidez-Anthony Yarde.

Norman, 28-0 (22 KOs), is a 24-year-old from Conyers, Georgia. He will be making the third defense as the primary WBO titleholder.
