Request for Review of TKO Decision in My Professional Boxing Debut and Inquiry on Changes in Boxing Rules Since 1988
Dear BoxRec Team,
I am writing to formally contest the referee’s decision to issue a TKO in my professional boxing debut on July 20, 2025, during the HBE Fight Night, and to request clarification on how boxing rules have evolved since the Thomas Hearns vs. James Kinchen bout in 1988 (Round 4).
As a dedicated student of old school boxing, inspired by the defensive mastery of James “Lights Out” Toney, I entered my debut with rigorous preparation. However, the referee prematurely stopped the fight, citing the absence of an ambulance at the venue rather than my performance or safety in the ring. During the bout, I sustained a knockdown but immediately recovered, actively engaging my opponent with counterpunches and defensive maneuvers. As my opponent threw a right hand, I bent at the waist to evade it and, anticipating a left hook, pulled back, momentarily losing balance. At that moment, the referee intervened and declared a TKO.
This decision, based on logistical concerns rather than my ability to continue, deprived me of the opportunity to demonstrate my resilience and skill, core tenets of boxing. I was fully capable of continuing, as evidenced by my active defense and counterpunching. This ruling undermines the spirit of the sport and misrepresents my years of dedication.
I respectfully request that BoxRec review the referee’s actions and consider amending the fight’s outcome to reflect a fairer assessment of the bout. Additionally, as a student of boxing history, I am curious about how boxing rules have changed since the 1988 Thomas Hearns vs. James Kinchen fight (Round 4), particularly regarding referee stoppages and safety protocols. Could you provide insight into whether the standards applied in my fight align with modern regulations compared to those in 1988?
Thank you for addressing this grievance and for providing clarity on the evolution of boxing rules. I look forward to your response and any actions taken to ensure a just representation of my professional record.
