Oscar Collazo, Gabriela Fundora star in September 20 doubleheader

One undisputed and one lineal champion have their next fights locked in – and on the same night.

Golden Boy Promotions announced a doubleheader today featuring unified strawweight king Oscar Collazo and undisputed flyweight queen Gabriela Fundora defending their titles against Jayson Vayson and Ayelén Granadino, respectively.

Collazo-Vayson will be the 12-round main event on DAZN and Fundora-Granadino is the 10-round co-feature. The event is scheduled for September 20 at the Fantasy Springs Resort Casino in Indio, California.

The 16-0 (8 KOs) Fundora, the youngest undisputed champion in the sport at 23, has dispatched her last two opponents via seventh-round stoppage: Gabriela Celeste Alaniz last November and Marilyn Badillo Amaya in April.

Granadino, 12-2-4 (1 KO), is a 27-year-old from Argentina. She lost to the 6-3 Marie Connan by unanimous decision in April 2024, a rematch of their first outing five months earlier, which Granadino won by split decision. Granadino has won both her fights since the Connan loss.

Boxing Scene has confirmed that hard plans are in place for Golden Boy’s lineal and unified champions Oscar Collazo and Gabriela Fundora to return to the ring in early fall.

“I’m staying 100% focused on defending my belts,” Fundora said in Golden Boy’s press release.

“Nothing is free. I have worked very hard to get here,” said Granadino. “After I beat Micaela Milagros Lujan in a final elimination for the WBA title [via majority decision in June], I knew my time had come and I am preparing accordingly. Gabriela Fundora is a great fighter, and I respect her until we get in the ring. I can’t wait to bring the four championship belts back to Argentina with me.”

Collazo, 28 years old and 12-0 (9 KOs), set a Puerto Rican record by winning his first world title in just seven professional fights. He has since made five successful defenses and unified the WBA and WBO belts last November with a seventh-round TKO of Knockout CP Freshmart.

Vayson, 14-1-1 (8 KOs), will hope to avoid being Collazo’s next victim.

“It will be the perfect opportunity to dazzle and represent Puerto Rico on such a big platform,” Collazo said. “We will enter the ring very prepared, with a lot of boxing IQ. We know Vayson is a great fighter and that he will be hungry to dethrone me, but he won’t be able to, because I have worked hard to defend what is mine and represent my island with pride.”

Vayson is on a four-fight win streak, including a second-round knockout of Japan’s Ryuya Yamanaka in December 2023. His lone loss came in a shutout to Seigo Yuri Akui in February 2023.

“I want to thank everyone who was able to make this happen,” said Vayson. “I am a fighter of few words, but I am ready to show the world that I am the best and am deserving of this opportunity. I will shock the world and represent the Philippines with pride!”

Oscar Collazo and Gabriela Fundora lead September 20th Golden Boy show in Indio

Two of Golden Boy’s top fighters, unified champions Oscar Collazo and Gabriela Fundora, will defend their belts atop a September 20th DAZN show at Indio, CA’s Fantasy Springs Resort Casino.

Former Olympian Collazo (12-0, 9 KO) has thoroughly cemented himself as Puerto Rico’s best active fighter, shredding his way through the minimumweight ranks with only token resistance. He’s racked up four finishes in five fights since taking out Melvin Jerusalem for the WBO title, including a rout of Knockout CP Freshmart to add the WBA belt to his collection.

Jerusalem has made noise about a rematch after beating Yudai Shigeoka for the WBC title, but Collazo will meet one of Jerusalem’s countrymen in longtime light flyweight Jayson Vayson (14-1-1, 8 KO), whose name I regularly use to tease my Pinoy friends. Vayson’s only loss saw him move up in weight to unsuccessfully challenge Seigo Yuri Akui in 2023, after which he notably blew out former minimumweight titlist Ryuya Yamanaka in two rounds.

While BoxRec still lists an upcoming IBF eliminator against Reggie Suganob, it seems he’s chosen a bigger fish.

“I want to thank Golden Boy Promotions and Miguel Cotto Promotions for giving me this opportunity to shine and defend my unified titles on September 20 in Indio, California, against a tough Filipino fighter, Jayson Vayson,” said Oscar Collazo. “All of my fans—Mexicans, Puerto Ricans, Americans, everyone in Southern California—need to show up at Fantasy Springs Resort Casino. It will be the perfect opportunity to dazzle and represent Puerto Rico on such a big platform. We will enter the ring very prepared, with a lot of boxing IQ. We know Vayson is a great fighter and that he will be hungry to dethrone me, but he won’t be able to, because I have worked hard to defend what is mine and represent my island with pride.”

“I want to thank everyone who was able to make this happen,” said Jayson Vayson. “I am a fighter of few words, but I am ready to show the world that I am the best and am deserving of this opportunity. I will shock the world and represent the Philippines with pride!”

Fundora (16-0, 8 KO) has likewise proven herself among the best women in the game at the age of 23, not just beating all comers but stopping four of her last five opponents. She’ll put all four flyweight titles on the line against Ayelen Granadino (12-2-4, 1 KO), a 27-year-old Argentinean whose only prior road trips saw her split a pair of bouts with 40-year old Marie Connan in France.

“I’m staying 100% focused on defending my belts,” said Gabriela Fundora. “Our immediate teamwork’s intelligent planning and dedicated commitment is the result of our reality.”

“Nothing is free, I have worked very hard to get here,” said Ayelén Granadino. “After I beat Micaela Milagros Lujan in a final elimination for the WBA title, I knew my time had come and I am preparing accordingly. Gabriela Fundora is a great fighter, and I respect her until we get in the ring. I can’t wait to bring the four championship belts back to Argentina with me.”

Golden Boy promises a stacked undercard; we’ll let you know if it lives up to the billing.

One of the most bizarre corner stoppages I've ever seen, Vayson was well in the fight, bogus knockdown in the first aside, cuffing hook around the back of the head had him down, ref shouldn't be scoring that, Collazo was bringing pressure as he does, getting home with some nice body work but Vayson was picking off some cute counters, it was an even fight from what I saw but round 7 Collazo was putting it on slightly when Vayson's corner waved the towel, unbelievable tbh, if your Vayson your sacking the trainer before you leave the ring

Maybe the corner had some money on a certain outcome?
