Lenier Pero vs Jordan Thompson headlines November 1st DAZN show in Orlando

Undefeated heavyweight Lenier Pero gets the spotlight in Orlando later this year

Seven months after his successful Matchroom debut, Cuban heavyweight Lenier Pero will headline a November 1st show against Jordan Thompson at the Caribe Royale Orlando.

Pero’s (12-0, 8 KO) biggest pro fight to date saw him come from behind to stop Viktor Faust in wonky fashion two years back. He’s effectively done nothing since; he racked up six minutes of ring time over the next two years before picking up a foul-filled decision over Detrailous Webster in April.

There’s really not a whole lot to him besides the novelty appeal of a Cuban heavyweight born after the Cambrian Explosion. Between the inactivity and the lack of sizzle at age 32, I’m not sure what he’s done to earn Eddie Hearn’s endorsement.

That said, he should beat Thompson (15-1, 12 KO), a career cruiserweight who hasn’t fought in the two years since Jai Opetaia shelled him in London. This is a pretty blatant showcase.

“I’m going to show why I’m undefeated – and why I’m destined to become the first Cuban heavyweight champion of the world,” Pero said.

Thompson, 15-1 (12 KOs), is a former cruiserweight making his heavyweight debut following his September 2023 stoppage loss to Jai Opetaia. He is returning after 25 months away from the ring.

“I’m very grateful for the opportunity and you are going to see my best as a heavyweight. I’ll be ready for whatever the night and occasion brings,” Thompson said.

22-year-old Olympic medalist Omari Jones (3-0, 3 KO) will make his fourth appearance in eight months on the undercard, battling the indefatigable TBA.

There is one potential good thing about this fight. If Thompson does alright it will give Jai a bit of confidence for heavyweight.

I don’t know how he will go, but he got smashed by Jai.

LENIER PERO-JORDAN THOMPSON, OMARI JONES TO FEATURE ON MATCHROOM'S NOV. 1 CARD IN ORLANDO

A pair of Olympians are set to be showcased on November 1 at Caribe Royale in Orlando on DAZN, Matchroom Boxing announced on Monday.

In the main event, Lenier Pero (12-0, 8 KOs), a 2016 Olympian from Cuba, will take on Jordan Thompson (15-1, 12 KOs) in a 10-round heavyweight clash.

In the co-feature, 2024 United States Olympic bronze medalist Omari Jones will be showcased in a hometown bout against an opponent yet to be determined.

The junior middleweight prospect Jones (3-0, 3 KOs) made his pro debut in March and has stopped each of his first three opponents inside of a combined six rounds.

“Every fight is a step toward greatness, and November 1 is no different. I respect Jordan Thompson, but this is my time,” said Pero. “I’m going to show why I’m undefeated – and why I’m destined to become the first Cuban heavyweight champion of the world.”

The 32-year-old Pero is ranked No. 3 by the WBA. In April, weeks after signing a co-promotional deal with Matchroom and BoxLab, Pero scored a 10-round unanimous decision win against Detrailous Webster.

“The heavyweight division is evolving rapidly, and Lenier is well placed to stake his claim for the big fights in the glamour division, but Jordan can put pay to those plans as he makes his bow in the division,” said Matchroom Boxing head Eddie Hearn.

Thompson has not fought since September 2023 when he suffered the lone loss of his career against Ring and IBF cruiserweight champion Jai Opetaia by fourth-round stoppage. The bout against Pero will mark Thompson’s debut as a heavyweight.

“I’m very grateful for the opportunity, and you are going to see my best as a heavyweight,” Thompson said. “I’ll be ready for whatever the night and occasion bring.”

Omari Jones Ready For Toughest Test In Hometown Fight With Durable Yusuph Metu

Omari Jones has lived up to the billing as one of boxing’s most promising prospects three fights into his young career.

The 22-year-old Jones’ next trek into the ring could prove to be his most difficult, though.

The 2024 Olympic bronze medalist will return to his hometown of Orlando to face Yusuph Metu in a six-round junior middleweight match Saturday night at Caribe Royale. In Metu, Jones believes he is up against the biggest challenge of his brief career.

“This is definitely the toughest test,” Jones told The Ring. “He’s 12-2, he hasn’t been stopped and he went the distance in 10-rounders with a lot of veterans and undefeated fighters. He gave them tough times, so I’m ready for the challenge.”

Jones’ fourth professional fight is part of the undercard of a 10-round heavyweight clash between Cuban southpaw Lenier Pero (12-0, 8 KOs) and England’s Jordan Thompson (15-1, 12 KOs). DAZN will stream the Pero-Thompson and Jones-Metu bouts as part of a show set to begin at 8 p.m. ET (midnight GMT).

Metu (12-2, 9 KOs), of Mwanza, Tanzania, is coming off a first-round knockout of Mainya Ramadhan (4-5-4, 0 KOs) on July 19. The two losses on Metu’s record came via unanimous decision in 10-round bouts to undefeated fighters in Anthony Velazquez (18-0-1, 15 KOs) on April 26 and Albert Khamkhoev (12-0, 5 KOs) in September 2024.

Metu, 32, began his career 10-0 with seven knockouts before going 2-2 in his last four fights.

Jones (3-0, 3 KOs) last stepped into the ring on the same day Metu last fought.

He dropped the awkward and much more experienced Alfredo Rodolfo Blanco (24-15, 11 KOs) twice and stopped him with a body shot in the third round. Jones has yet to fight beyond the third round as a pro.

Jones made his pro debut on March 15 at Caribe Royale, where he stopped Alessio Mastronunzio (14-6, 4 KOs) in the second round.

“I started training a week or so after my fight [against Blanco], so it’s been a long time coming,” Jones said. “I’m ready to get back in there, and there’s no better place to do it than in my hometown. I’m very excited. Sold a lot of tickets, so there are going to be a lot of people in support and it’s going to be a great show, I promise you.”

Jordan Thompson Ready To Remind Boxing World Who He Is Against Lenier Pero

It’s easy to forget about anything when it has been out of the limelight for over two years.

After 25 months outside of the ring, Jordan Thompson plans to remind the boxing world exactly who he is on Saturday.

Thompson will return to the ring to make his heavyweight debut against undefeated Cuban heavyweight Lenier Pero in the main event of a Matchroom Boxing card on DAZN at the Caribe Royale in Orlando. While the road back to the ring was a tumultuous one, Thompson is feeling as good as ever before his debut in boxing's true glamour division.

“Excited is an understatement,” Thompson told The Ring. “Above all, I’m just grateful. It's been a long two years out of the ring. I’m just grateful to get back in there, and gratitude is a hell of a thing. We're gonna go out there and put on a show.”

“I’m more confident than ever,” he added. “I think the time has been a blessing in disguise. It's been a time to self-reflect and look back. Boxing is a sport where it moves on and forgets you very quickly and unforgivingly. I think in that time where boxing may have moved on and forgotten me a little bit, I've really remembered myself and who I am. I think that's why it's gonna be ever so special come Saturday night.”

Thompson (15-1, 12 KOs) last stepped into the ring on Sept. 30, 2023, and suffered the lone defeat of his career, a fourth-round stoppage loss to IBF cruiserweight champion Jai Opetaia. He had contemplated the move to heavyweight before facing Opetaia (28-0, 22 KOs), but a shot at a world title was too good to pass up, no matter how difficult it was for the 6-foot-6 Thompson to boil down to the 200-pound limit. He also had to deal with the IBF’s 10-pound rehydration clause on the morning of the fight.

“Heavyweight was discussed the fight before Jai,” Thompson said. “I was like, ‘Yo, that killed me.’ I didn't feel good at all. So we spoke, I spoke to my team, and we said, ‘Listen, I gotta move up, man.’ So we were already in discussions for heavyweight fights way back in early 2023, and then, boom, I get a phone call saying you got a world title shot. I said, ‘Roll the dice.’ You don't get world title shots every day. I'm one punch away when you hit as hard as me.

"We came up short. It is what it is. We keep it cracking, and now, finally, I can just do me, be me, and everyone can see me."

Thompson, of Manchester, England, had a potential return delayed by an injury and surgery. Once he recovered, there were a handful of names that Thompson, 32, said he could have made his return against in his heavyweight debut.

Then, an opportunity to jump right into the deep end came in the form of Pero (12-0, 8 KOs) of Camaguey, Cuba, who is ranked No. 3 by the WBA. Pero, 32, is coming off a 10-round unanimous decision victory over Detrailous Webster on April 18, and he had stopped five straight opponents ahead of his last outing. Of his eight knockouts, five have come in the first round.

While the 2016 Rio Olympian represents a tall task, what could be on the other side if things go according to plan made it a no-brainer for Thompson.

“This was probably the hardest of the bunch that I got offered,” Thompson said. “I am a man who's calculated. No risk, no reward. When you weigh up the pros and cons of a fight, you've got that world No. 3 ranking, I'm gonna take that. That's why I'm here. I’m not here to just have fun. I'm here to take that, move on and do my thing.”

Lenier Pero Ready To Give Jordan Thompson Rude Welcome To Heavyweight division

Lenier Pero has enjoyed a rapid rise in the heavyweight ranks and isn’t far from world title shot.

But if he is going to continue his ascent, he’ll have to handle his business against a man who will be fighting as a full-fledged heavyweight for the first time but has also built his own solid reputation.

Pero, who is ranked No. 3 by the WBA, is scheduled to face Jordan Thompson on Saturday at the Caribe Royale. Thompson has fought at or slightly above the 200-pound cruiserweight limit his entire career, but he has a heavyweight frame at 6-foot-6.

The Englishman arguably represents the most significant test to date for Pero even though he's coming off the only loss in his career, a fourth-round stoppage against IBF titleholder Jai Opetaia in September 2023.

The undefeated Cuban southpaw says he's prepared to show his opponent that the heavyweight division is another world.

“I think you know when you come into these fights how ready you need to be,” Pero said via translator at the final press conference on Thursday. “I feel like I'm very much in the best shape mentally and physically for this fight. I think you know as well from the fights that you've seen me in that I’m a great warrior.

"I want to also welcome my opponent Jordan Thompson, but also say to him that this is not cruiserweight, and you'll see that on Saturday night.”

Pero (12-0, 8 KOs) is coming off a unanimous decision victory over Detrailous Webster on April 18, the first time Pero had gone the distance since 2022 as he had won five straight by stoppage. Of Pero’s eight wins inside the distance, five have come in the first round.

Pero’s co-promoter, President of Boxlab Promotions Amaury Piedra hasn’t been shy about touting his fighter's potential. At the the same time, he knows anything can happen when two heavyweights step into the ring.

Piedra views Thompson (15-1, 12 KOs) as a genuine threat, which means a victory on Saturday will bring Pero a significant step closer to becoming Cuba’s first heavyweight champion.

“All you can ask for is opportunities,” Piedra said to The Ring. “Then you’ve got to capitalize. I know [Pero is] focused. He's in the best shape he's ever been in. He's ready, so let's see what happens.”

Said Pero: “The reason I believe I can win this fight is that I’ve prepared really well and I am completely ready for this. I also want to show what I am made of, and I believe I can do that.”

Odds for a fair bit closer after the weigh in. People (including myself) impressed with Thompson shape at heavyweight…

Probably stopped cutting 20 lb and added 20lb, to be a nice solid 6”6 240lb… (almost the perfect heavyweight size)…

Haven’t seen much of him but seems pretty technicaly limited but if he just goes for the big man classic of jab jab jab. With a right hand cocked at all times and lets it really fly now and g town I kinda like his chances. Pero feels dramatically over rated and hasn’t been super impressive as a pro (and was not that impressive as an amature)

I had Pero a wide 98-91 winner, was not impressed with Thompson at all, he looked massive compared to Pero but never imposed himself, couldn't get anything going and Pero just tagged him with that southpaw left hand, strayed low repeatedly and got a point off in the 7th, Thompson finally looked like he was getting something going about the 8th but got wobbled by a left hand in the 9th which took away any momentum he had, I don't think Pero was brilliant, it was a pretty poor watch but he was clearly the winner imo

Pat Brown: ‘I brought my dad to America, and that’s everything to me’

As the excitement builds around British cruiserweight Pat Brown, the 25-year-old from Manchester seems to only grow more humble, less concerned with all the fuss being made about him. Ironically, it’s one of the characteristics that makes so many believe he has the potential to become a national, and perhaps global, phenomenon.

Even after Brown put on a dramatic display Saturday at the Caribe Royale in Orlando, Florida, in a destruction of veteran Felix Valera – who entered the fight with 151 professional rounds, compared to his opponent’s nine – he seemed less focused on the win, the knockout or his first appearance in the US.

He just wanted to talk about his old man.

“At the resort, it's been beautiful. Couldn't have gone any better,” Brown said in the ring after his second-round knockout of Valera. “And listen, I've reached the pinnacle of boxing, me and me dad. You know, me dad’s took me to the gym since seven years of age, and we've never been on a business flight together. And we did that.

“He's been smiling all week. You know, he's been working his bollocks off – pardon me French – all his life for me and me two brothers. And I brought me dad to America, and yeah, he's loving it. He's living life. And that's everything to me. All that I do is to make that man proud, and I have done it. So, yeah, I've reached the top of the sport already to be doing that with me dad.”

If you think Brown’s wholesome, humble bearing is too good to be true, just wait until you see him in the ring. Brown not only looks the part – his muscle-slabbed 6ft 3ins frame could carry him to heavyweight one day – but can also box his tail off.

His team had hoped to get him rounds against Valera, and Brown was dutifully cool in his early approach in Saturday’s scheduled 10-rounder (another career first). But when he opened up Valera with a level-changing double hook, backed him up with a similar flurry and then rocked him with a quick jab-straight right hammer early in the second, Brown didn’t stand on ceremony. Seconds later, after three knockdowns and with Valera stretched face-first on the canvas, the US had made its concussive introduction to Brown.

“I'm happy with it. But, listen, I never go looking for it,” Brown said of the knockout performance. “That's the difference – it just comes.

“You can't just go in like a bulldozer. So I know that, and that's what I've been working on. But I know he's a tricky customer, and once we got him hurt, it goes to anyone out there: I don't let you get off the hook easy.”

Brown, now 5-0 (5 KOs), wasn’t interested in playing matchmaker after Saturday’s fight. He says he’ll leave plotting his career path to his team and promoter Matchroom Boxing. Meanwhile, Eddie Hearn called Brown “Manchester’s Rocky Marciano” and “a massive problem for every cruiserweight in the world” while at the same time seemingly trying to speak his own patience into existence.

”That's when you know you're special – come out and produce a performance like that,” Hearn said of Brown. “You guys watching, everyone that knows their boxing saw that, and they know we've got someone very special on our hands here. He's 25 – nice and slow – but the reality is, this kid is the goods, and he's absolute box office to watch, with dynamite in both hands. And I can't wait for the journey.”
