If James "Lights Out" Toney is in shape, he whups Virgil Hill every day of the week and twice on Sunday. He was that good. I mean, when he was in great shape.

How many good performances did Toney have at 175 ? He was well beaten by the great Drake Thadzi, who VH beat easily.

James Lights Out Toney was taking the sport for granted. He wasn't training but he loved to fight anybody, anytime and at any place.

He revived his career in 2003 when he had that classic cruiserweight title fight with Vassily Jirov. It was an spectacular performance by both fighters. Toney became The Ring Magazine Fighter of the Year for the second time. The first time was in 1991, twelve years away from his prime.

If he was one of the most complete boxers in your lifetime, shouldn't he have beaten Drake Thadzi?

Toney's issues with conditioning are well known. In shape, he was a hell of a fighter-see the McCallum bouts. Out of shape- like against Tiberi- he was not nearly as good.

Toney by easy decision, an in-shape Toney is a class above Hill. Hill was a great draw in Bismarck, where they went crazy watching him outpoint the David Vedders of this world.

Like I said, James "Lights Out" Toney was one of the most complete boxers that ever happened in boxing. He had it all, especially when he was in great shape. It takes a lot of boxing acumen, technical skills and ring generalship to fight from middleweight to heavyweight.

His problem was that he didn't train like he should have. Why? I don't know. Maybe he thought that he didn't need all that training, and with fighting and being active, would make him win fights. Toney is one of the modern fighters of the last 35 years that got over 90 fights. The guy was a warrior that fought anybody, any place and at any time. A certified legend? Yes!

Exactly. James Toney wasn't a gym rat. But, when in shape, one of the all time best. He could have had a greater career if trained properly.

Few fighters today had as many fights as the great James "Lights Out" Toney. A certified boxing legend that loves to fight.

Plus, James "Lights Out" Toney had over 90 fights and was never knocked out from middleweight to heavyweight. That's amazing. It takes a lot of skill to fight all those weight classes.
