Boxer becomes unwell ten days after second straight KO, dies at 32
Ghanaian boxing is in mourning after the sudden death of Ernest Akushey, known affectionately in the ring as “Bahubali.” The 32-year-old passed away in the early hours of Tuesday, September 23, 2025 — just eleven days after suffering his second consecutive knockout defeat.
Once tipped as one of Ghana‘s most promising prospects, Akushey’s passing has left his family, fans, and the global boxing community in shock.
From rising star to tragedy
Akushey made his professional debut with flair, storming to a 6-0 record behind an aggressive, relentless style that earned him a nickname borrowed from the legendary warrior in a hit Indian film.
His final fight came on Friday, September 12, at the Bukom Boxing Arena. Facing the unbeaten Jacob Dickson, Akushey entered with high hopes of reigniting his career, but instead endured a punishing night. Dickson dominated from the early rounds, eventually stopping Akushey via technical knockout in the eighth.
The bout marked Akushey’s second straight stoppage defeat, a sequence that now casts a dark shadow over his promising career.
Final hours
According to local reports, Akushey complained of feeling unwell on Monday, September 22, ten days after the fight. His condition deteriorated rapidly overnight, leading to his untimely passing.
His death has hit especially hard in James Town, Accra, a community synonymous with Ghanaian boxing heritage.
WBC statement
In response to the tragedy, the World Boxing Council and its President, Mauricio Sulaiman, issued a heartfelt message of condolence.
“The WBC mourns this irreparable loss and extends our deepest sympathies to Ernest’s family and many friends,” said Sulaiman.
Akushey’s death underscores the dangers of the sport. It comes at a time when calls for stricter medical oversight and more extended rest periods with care after knockout defeats continue to echo throughout boxing.
For Ghana, it is the loss of a fighter who once carried the hopes of becoming a national champion. For the sport, it is another painful reminder of boxing’s unforgiving nature.
At just 32, Akushey leaves behind not only an unfinished career but also a grieving family and a fan base who believed in his potential.
