Pinklon Thomas vs Greg Page 1984

Post by gilgamesh »

Instead of Page fighting Witherspoon for the vacant WBC title, he gets a shot at Pinklon Thomas and the WBA title, and opts for that instead. Who ya got?

Given the way these 2 guys' fights at the world level tended to go, and the styles they're bringing to the table I can't see this one being anything other than a closely contested jabbing contest.

Page has better movement
Thomas has better defense
Page has more punch variety
Thomas has more punch accuracy
Both had good chins, but could be hurt
Both had a pretty solid punch, and could hurt you

The way I see it going is they're fighting on near even terms in the early going. When Page is doing his Ali imitation he can get more shots off on Pinklon, but when his movement slows Pinklon gets more shots off on him. I think they wind up splitting the first 6 rounds with 3 rounds going to each man. All close. As the fight goes along and Page's movement slows more often, Pinklon starts to find the mark more and more and starts to rack up rounds. Page comes back, and rocks him at some point to get the momentum back in his favor for a round or so, but Pinklon re-establishes the jab, and is able to start piling up points again. The person that invested more in going to the body early in the fight is going to have the edge coming down the stretch, and they're going to need it because this one will be close as it gets. I think Pinklon will have remembered the body more than Page, and I think he's able to eke out a razor thin split decision.

Thomas has a good, strong jab and if he could get that going, I sense he would take a close UD as Page could be lazy.

Page was more naturally gifted and could fight a number of ways, but both, on form and in shape, I'd probably side with Page in another close UD win.

Page was a wasted talent.

In 1984, I think Pinklon would take a UD over the more talented but lazy Greg.

If Page shows up in his first Tim Witherspoon fight, Thomas would out-jabbed him and land good right hands to take a decision, but if Page shows up against Gerrie Coetzee that won him the WBA Heavyweight title by the controversial stoppage, then he would have a chance to get even with the prime Pinky behind his own left jabs, right hands and combinations to either Page takes a decision or Pinky takes a decision.
