This fight was actually supposed to happen in 1997. De La Hoya and Tszyu even fought on the same card in separate bouts (probably as part of the build-up) - De La Hoya decisioned Miguel Angel Gonzalez and Tszyu's fight against Leonard Mas was controversially called a NC.

That would've been a WBC/IBF unification at 140lbs.

I think, De La Hoya was just better. Bigger, better and stronger. Think he would've stopped Tszyu in late rounds. But Kostya would've had his moments.

Agree. De La Hoya was a bad matchup for Tszyu and I think he stops him

The speed, and aggression of De La Hoya would've been too much for Tszyu. I think he would've gotten stopped in 7 or 8 rounds. He maybe could have some success early in the feeling out rounds, but the more the pace picked up, the further it gets away from Tszyu.

Tszyu would have given him the toughest fight of his career to that point.
Oscar was kept clear of Azumah Nelson at 130, Orubek Nazarov at 135 and Tszyu at 140.
They shared a card in 1997/98 when Oscar beat Gonzales and Tszyu kayoed Mas, but got dudded into a No decision.
Instead of fighting Tszyu, Oscar went north and got a call in a close fight against Whitaker. Tszyu then had a shocker and lost to Phillips and blew his chance.
Oscar is a deserved favourite, but he would have been seriously tested - and possibly beaten.
Tszyu would have tested his chin big time.
