And on a slightly less significant note, it's Kilburns birthday today.

If I recall correctly, it was not on live and I listened on the radio.

It was even brutal then

The next day I remember watching it on the black and white tv in my student flat. Still the best three rounds in history

Just think what either of those two in the condition they were in for that fight would have done to today's division

In many ways, I had more respect for Hearns after the fight

Yes, it was live on the radio in the early hours.

I had a £100 on Hagler to win at evens, Hearns was 1-2 on. Probably a couple of weeks wages back then.

The tension listening on the radio was incredible, especially when Steele took Hagler to the doctor to inspect the cut. Put me off gambling large-ish amounts for good!

I remember Reg Gutteridge I think it was saying that Hearns went down 'in sections like a carpenter's rule.' It's an image which has stuck with me ever since. I'm wondering whether that was the Barkley fight now that I think about it.....anyone remember.

superb. I watched it at the odeon marble arch

People slag off modern boxing but this fight was one for history.

Today should really be a Bank Holiday the world over, in appreciated for what these two great athletes gave to the world.

"Hearns is down, Hearns is down and on his back, he's in deep trouble in the third round. He's not going to beat the count, I dont beleive. Tommy Hearns tries to get up and heeeeeeeeeeee's out. Marvin Hagler knocks him out after Hearns nearly ended it with a first round knockout. It didnt go very far, but it was a beauty".

I remember the huge roar going up in the crowd as the first bell rang, and Reg Gutteridge saying
"the first round....like stepping into a mine field..."

the tension was almost unbearable before the opening bell - Harry Mullan remembered praying for the bell to end the first, as he thought he was about to have a heart attack ringside.

I watched it a couple of weeks back. It's a fight I like to play to non-boxing fans, they're always absolutely amazed when they see it.

Hearns really rattled Hagler in that 1st round, I think Hagler was a lot more hurt than he let on, because his knees really dipped and he actually held on to clear his head.

I wonder if there's any truth in the fact that Tommy was buggered going into the fight, because he did seem to let it all hang out, rather than trying to box Hagler. I don't think it would have made any difference anyhow, one way or another, Hagler would have found that chin at some point.

plenty in the paapers today

hart finishes off his article (quite a good one - not often you hear me say that).

With a quote :
The ref came over to inspect the cut at the end of the first and said to Hagler
"are you ok, how you doing, hows the cut"
to which hagler snarled sarcasticlly

"I aint missing him am I."

classic.

It's a fight which is perfect in almost every sense. Two men at the top of their profession, both big punchers, both world reknowned, both future hall of famers, both up for a tear up.

Still, we have fighters like this today, Barrera, Morales, Pacquaio are doing it at the lighter weights, Corrales is doing the business, Tszyu.

If you look at things objectively, our era is blessed, especially in the sub welterweight classes.

Quite agree

Hindsight is a wonderful thing. Although I think every knew that this was a classic in the making and on the night.

But, there are some exceptional fights to be made now. I just wonder if any of them will enter the public collective consciuousness now that they are rarely shown or only on PPV. ho hum

I also recall someone telling me that Hearns took some medication or did something that made his legs give out. Anyone?

Yes that is what I was referring to earlier, Manny Steward said the original plan was to box, but Hearns legs were completely gone. Tommy was ill or somthing in training, and then on the night of the fight he came in the dressing room to find Tommy's entourage giving him a pre fight rub down, which relaxed his leg muscles. They then decided that they'd never be able to move like they planned, so went out to knock Hagler out.

Fantastic :TU: Hagler pretty much wins it in the first minute - he was hurt by those Hearns right hand bombs early, but soon as you saw he was ok, you just knew he was gonna win it. ( I think I picked Tommy to win, but then I always do )

If Hagler had explained his tactics beforehand - I'm going to walk right into Hearns take his best punches, then fire back - you might think he was about to commit suicide - but they were the perfect tactics of course.

The story about Hearns' legs, I believe, was Manny said his legs felt weak before the fight in the dressing room ( over trained maybe ) so Manny gave him a leg massage right before he went out - which made it even worse.

With his legs under him, you'd think he would have boxed and moved more - and I think Tommy said, a few years later, he knew he couldn't last too long, so went for broke.

Even with a choice, it was gonna be a nightmare keeping Marv off him.

No Manny didn't give him the leg massage, it was one of Tommy's Friends, Manny said he went ballistic when he saw it, and kicked everyone out of the dressing room. I can imagine that if that is true it would have totally fucked his legs, you give a massage and rub down after not before. I've had a full massage before, the last thing I wanted to do after that was fight someone, even having a shag was off limits...

Yes you're right I remember that now.

Don't think I've ever heard Hearns come up with that story, but he was never one for excuses I guess.

Normally I would ignore anything like that from Manny, these days he seems to talk an awful lot of cobblers, changing his story depending on who he's talking to, or depending on which fighter he is currently training.

However, I find it hard to believe that Tommy would have executed that strategy against someone like Hagler unless something was wrong.

Hagler always said that getting hurt was as much mental as physical, and he proved it in that fight. He was hurt in the 1st minute of the 1st round, but seemed to 'set' himself after that, and simply let the shots bounce off that bullet-head of his. From then on in, it was a matter of time before Marvin chopped the great shuddering aspen down.

Yeah, I saw an interview with Manny on TV quite a while back when he said he went mental bout the leg massage - it totally sent his legs to sleep.
