Do you enjoy being hit?

Post by Sweet Dick Willie »

There was a person here who said he quit boxing because it's a sport where you damage another person. I quote two legends: "it is the hurt business" (Sugar Ray Robinson, might be incorrrect cause I didn't find the Ring issue) and (about beatings) "It was the only way I didn't feel the pain" (Johnny Tapia)

There's a unique thrill that comes with getting into a Fight with somebody. It makes the whole world disappear except for you and the person you're fighting. Whatever other worries, concerns, or anything else that may be on your mind disappears, and you can only think about the fight you're in, and how you can avoid getting hurt or hurt the other guy before he hurts you.

Enjoying getting hit is a special kinda crazy even in the hurt business, but I think there are those guys.

Sometimes in sparring I think of dropping my guard just to get punched but then not decide to do it as it wouldn't be fair for my partner. Am I crazy? Yes.

I remember having to take a couple of months off training once. During that time, I was literally looking for anyone who’d put on my gloves just to hit me in the face :D
That was one of the many times I realized there’s probably something wrong with me..

That being said... while I didn't care about punches to the head (and always kept moving forward) body blows (especially liver or solar plexus) were disgusting. They just take the motivation right out of you. There’s no comparison to getting hit in the face, even though I did get my nose completely smashed once, which wasn't exactly fun either.

It’s why I have more respect for pro boxers (even Jake Paul) than some armchair fans do. I can relate to what they’re going through.

I remember watching Briedis vs. Opetaia live..Briedis got his nose smashed early and still almost won, and Jai fought through a broken jaw. The balls on those guys is insane.

In my case, it’s definitely not as poetic as @Gilgamesh made it sound! :D

Everything I said is true, but being able to be one of the few human beings who can be hit and remain calm, cool and collected in a fight is something very few can master, and it's something you have to master if you ever wanna get good at this sport.

Edit: I was just informed I had said too much.

As someone who has trained and sparred for years, I don't think any honest boxer "enjoys" being hit. I certainly don't. What I do respect is the reality of the sport. Boxing is controlled violence — yes, it's the "hurt business" often attributed to Sugar Ray Robinson — but it's also discipline, timing, defense, and self-mastery.

Cant stand low blows. I literally feel it for next 2 weeks and it dit not need to be hard hits. Wondering why it is so overlooked in boxing.
