Robeisy Ramirez out of contract with Top Rank, to explore free agency
Robeisy Ramirez is set to explore the free agent market.
The two-time Olympic gold medalist and former WBO 126lbs titleholder is now out of contract with Top Rank, it was confirmed Friday. Ramirez signed with Top Rank in 2019, one year after he defected from Cuba and fought exclusively under its banner for all 17 pro fights.
However, the 32-year-old southpaw – who now lives and trains in Las Vegas – has not fought since a December 2024 stoppage defeat to Rafael Espinoza. More than a year later, he is now also without a promoter.
“My promotional contract has expired,” Ramirez confirmed Friday. “I believe this change will be good for my career and the opportunities ahead.
“I appreciate the last six years and wish Top Rank success as they sort out their next chapter.”
Interestingly, the development comes as Top Rank continues to face uncertainty regarding its own position in the current marketplace.
Hard choices have been made in the seven months since the end of its long-term output deal with U.S. cable giant ESPN. Their last show together aired on July 26, with the company partnering with other promoters to get many of its fighters in the ring.
Some boxers – along with staff members – were released in recent weeks. Ramirez’s situation is not uncommon, as promoters certainly hold the right to not re-sign a boxer for a variety of reasons.
The relationship between Top Rank and Ramirez, 14-3 (9 KOs), always seemed solid. It’s a testament to both sides considering the start of their run together. Ramirez was on the wrong end of a massive upset defeat in his August 2019 pro debut, when he was dropped in the opening round of an eventual six-round split decision defeat to Adan Gonzales.
Ramirez went on a tear after that, rattling off 13 consecutive victories. The run included his avenging his lone career defeat at the time with a six-round shutout of Gonzales in their July 2020 rematch.
Eight fights later, Ramirez claimed his first major title in an April 2023 points victory over Isaac Dogboe for the vacant WBO featherweight strap. The strong showing was reflective of the high praise that came with his decorated amateur career, including gold medal hauls in 2012 London and 2016 Rio.
The latter Olympic conquest came in a narrow victory over Shakur Stevenson, who also signed with Top Rank out of the amateurs and has since won major titles in four weight divisions.
There was brief overlap at featherweight between Ramirez and Stevenson, the latter who held the WBO 126lbs belt for less than a year before he moved up to 130lbs.
Still, Ramirez’s own run to the title came with credible wins over Abraham Nova, Eric Donovan and then-unbeaten Orlando Gonzalez, all in succession.
His reign did not make it out of 2023, however, as Ramirez ran into his pro kryptonite in the form of 6ft featherweight Rafael Espinoza, 28-0 (24 KOs).
Their December 2023 slugfest – rated high among the year’s best fights – saw both fighters hit the deck in Pembroke Pines, Florida – not too far from the Miami region where he first arrived upon his defection from Cuba. Ramirez’s suffered knockdown in the 12th and final round provided the difference on the scorecards between a split decision draw and the eventual majority decision in favor of Espinoza to claim the title.
Efforts to avenge the defeat opened with promise in their December 2024 rematch in Phoenix, Arizona. In fact, Ramirez was ahead on two scorecards through five rounds before complaining of compromised vision early in Round 6. Espinoza appeared to have landed a right hand, though Ramirez insisted he was caught with an inadvertent elbow.
Whatever the case, his actions caused referee Chris Flores to halt the contest, thus ending his chance at redemption.
Sadly, it remains his final in-ring image until he’s able to resume his career under new representation.

Robeisy Ramirez ends free agency, signs with Raizd Boxing
Former featherweight titleholder Robeisy Ramirez has a new promoter after signing with Raizd Boxing, the nascent boxing company announced on Monday.
Boxing reporter Carlos Linares was first with the news.
Ramirez won Olympic gold in 2012 and 2016, defected from Cuba in 2018, and turned pro with Top Rank in 2019. He lost his pro debut but steadied himself after, eventually winning a vacant featherweight world title in April 2023 with a decision over Isaac Dogboe.
Ramirez made one successful defense before suffering a majority decision loss to Rafael Espinoza in December 2023. In his last outing, Ramirez suffered a worse defeat in his rematch with Espinoza in December 2024, getting stopped in the sixth round. He is 14-3 (9 KOs). Earlier this year, Ramirez confirmed that he was no longer with Top Rank.
Raizd Boxing is so new that its first fight night hasn’t yet taken place. It is scheduled for May 29 at Humo Arena in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.
Although a graphic appeared earlier in April depicting Ramirez on the May 29 card – apparently prior to his signing with Raizd Boxing being official – he has not yet been announced for the event.
The show is currently set to feature Uzbekistan’s own former unified junior featherweight titleholder Murodjon Akhmadaliev, 14-2 (11 KOs), returning for the first time since his decision loss last September to Naoya Inoue.
Akhmadaliev is scheduled to face Hegly Mosqueda, 27-1 (20 KOs), a 31-year-old from Venezuela who has won two straight since being outpointed by the 9-0 Felix Parrilla in April 2024. Those two victories were a quick TKO of a 3-23 foe and an eight-round decision over the 30-8 Nestor Gonzalez.
Also announced for this card is a junior middleweight bout between Magomed Kurbanov and Tonghui Li. That would appear to be a rescheduled date and location, as DAZN’s broadcast schedule had previously listed Kurbanov-Li as taking place on May 9 in Phuket, Thailand.
Kurbanov, 26-2 (14 KOs), won decisions over Liam Smith, Patrick Teixeira, Johan Gonzalez and Michel Soro between 2021 and 2023. But he was stopped in the fifth round by Israil Madrimov in 2024 and dropped a split decision to Pavel Sosulin last July.
Li, 16-2 (9 KOs), has won six consecutive bouts since a split decision loss in 2018 to the 4-2-1 Jung Kyoung Lee.
Plus Lazizbek Mullojonov is somehow slated to perform despite a suspension. Mullojonov won Olympic gold at heavyweight in 2024 while representing Uzbekistan. He is 7-0 (7 KOs) in the paid ranks but was suspended for three years – apparently only from amateur competition – after testing positive for a banned performance-enhancing drug.

Mauricio Sulaiman to investigate Robeisy Ramirez fight cancellation
Mauricio Sulaiman, president of the WBC, has promised to look into claims from Robeisy Ramirez that his fight with Asror Vokhidov was today unduly cancelled in Uzbekistan.
"Tonight I was supposed to be fighting in Tashkent, Uzbekistan," Ramirez, 14-3 (9 KOs), wrote on social media. "Instead my fight got cancelled over a 'supposedly' late MRI. I made my position clear to @wbcmoro [Sulaiman] in our call with my attorney. Mauricio, you say you look out for fighters. Prove it. Do right by boxing. Do right by me."
Ramirez, in a separate post, explained that the reason he was given for the cancellation - from officials associated with the WBC and promoters - was the absence of an MRI scan. In the same post, he published a photo of him with what appears to be MRI scan results dated May 29 and timed at 5:37pm.
It is also being alleged by Ramirez that he was asked, and refused, to sign a three-fight deal by Raizd Boxing to guarantee his purse.
"What happens in these parts of the world deserves to be investigated," Ramirez said.
Sulaiman responded to the allegations on social media.
"I attended phone calls being in Mexico - so I personally couldn't find anything specific," he wrote in part. "Safety will always be a top priority... I will personally make a report once all facts are known."
Ramirez, 14-3 (9 KOs), is a double Olympic champion and former WBO featherweight beltholder. He was hoping to make his return, under the guidance of the renowned coach Robert Garcia, following a 17-month absence from the ring.
