Why Civic Centre?

Why not an arena in Birmingham?

Walker is from Wolverhampton. The arena is probably a bit too big for it. I like it as if they keep doing shows like this then they can come to York soon with Atang.

Interesting, and competitive matchmaking with these guys I gotta give 'em that. Not necessarily a big main event type bout to me, but a good card could be built around competitive matchups, and I'm sure a few prospects to fill the card out.

Sam Eggington and Conah Walker agree terms for British humdinger

Action is almost guaranteed to occur in Wolverhampton, England, on May 2 when Conah Walker faces Sam Eggington.

The two crowd-pleasers are amongst the most exciting fighters in British boxing and Walker is on a run of form that has seen him arrive on the fringes of world level before nailing down the Eggington fight.

Since defeating Lewis Ritson in November 2024, Walker has bettered Harry Scarff, Liam Taylor and Pat McCormack, stopping all three.

Before that, he lost a narrow decision to now IBF champion Lewis Crocker.

Walker is advised by Sam Jones, and it is believed Matchroom wanted to pair Walker with another Jones client, Jack Catterall, but Catterall will instead face Jose Ramirez on May 30 in Fresno, California.

Jones has long been an admirer of a bout between Eggington and Walker, and it now seems set for May 2 at Wolverhampton Civic Hall.

And Eggington had put the call out last week on X, when he wrote: “Hearing Conah Walker can’t find anyone to fight him, with all due respect I’m local and more than up for it.”

He implored Jones to reach out to his manager, Jon Pegg, and the deal has now been done.

It had seemed Eggington was on his way to challenge Milan Pratt for the European title, but the Walker fight is more appealing.

The 30-year-old Walker is 17-3-1 (8 KOs), and from Wolverhampton, while local rival Eggington is 36-9 (20 KOs). The West Midlands man has not boxed since winning a decision over Lee Cutler last April in a fight that was stopped after nine rounds due to cuts.

“It’s just a great fight,” said a source after the bout was signed.

Conah Walker and Sam Eggington promise war in Midlands clash

Conah Walker gets the hometown headliner he’s been hoping for when he fights local rival Sam Eggington on May 2.

Welterweight contender Walker is 17-3-1 (8 KOs) and coming off the biggest win of his career having stopped touted Pat McCormack in Monte Carlo in December.

The 30-year-old is trained by Jamie Moore and managed by Sam Jones and BS reported on Walker-Eggington being agreed earlier this month.

Veteran Eggington is 36-9 (20 KOs) and has been in several Fight of the Year contenders but has struggled with inactivity. His last fight came when he won a technical decision over Bournemouth’s Lee Cutler last year after a headclash caused the end of the fight in round nine.

The Midlands rivals will meet at catchweight, given Eggington boxes at 154lbs, at the University of Wolverhampton at The Halls.

“My dream is to fight for a world title,” said Walker.

“That dream was so close to being a reality for this fight – but the next best thing was a homecoming in Wolverhampton… And the opponent in Sam Eggington couldn’t be more fitting. It will be a special fight for the fans. Look, I’m a 147lbs fighter, Sam is a 154 fighter – but we’ve made it happen for the fans and we will put on an amazing spectacle on May 2. But there’s only one winner and that’s me.”

Eggington is convinced he is once again being overlooked.

“Lee Cutler and Joe Pigford [w ko 5] both picked me for the away corner,” he said. “Different fighters, different venues. Same result incoming. Conah Walker, you are next.”

The bill also sees Bilal Fawaz make the first defense of his British and Commonwealth titles at 154lbs against Birmingham’s 20-6-1 (8 KOs) Ryan Kelly. Fawaz is 11-1-1 (3 KOs) and won the belts against Ishmael Davis just last month.

There is also a return for Northampton’s Kieron Conway, 23-4-1 (7 KOs), after his October defeat to George Liddard. The Northampton man is moving up to super middleweight where he has been matched with the 20-2 (7 KOs) Mark Jeffers.

Young Bristol star Tiah Mai Ayton, 19, meets experienced former European title challenger Stevi Levy, who is 15-4 (2 KOs). Ayton is 5-0.

Junaid Boston, 10-1-1 (8 KOs), and 1-0 Louie Ward have also been added to the card.

“Conah Walker is on the cusp on greatness,” said promoter Eddie Hearn. “After his sensational win in Monte Carlo over Pat McCormack, he couldn’t be closer to a world title shot. But he’s got to go through the trenches again, this time in front of his home fans. And a win over a tough, experienced operator in Sam Eggington would put an exclamation mark on his pursuit for glory.”

Conah Walker-Sam Eggington set for May 2 headliner in Wolverhampton

Conah Walker and Sam Eggington will square off in a 12-round welterweight matchup on May 2 at the University of Wolverhampton in Midlands, United Kingdom on DAZN, Matchroom Boxing announced on Wednesday.

Walker (17-3-1, 8 KOs), a 30-year-old from Wolverhampton, is on a four-fight winning streak featuring stoppage wins in his last three against Harry Scarff, Liam Taylor and Pat McCormack, during a banner 2025 campaign.

"My dream is to fight for a world title,” Walker said in a statement. “That dream was so close to being a reality for this fight [in a rematch against Lewis Crocker], but the next best thing was a homecoming in Wolverhampton. The opponent in Sam Eggington couldn’t be more fitting. It will be a special fight for the fans.”

Eggington (36-9, 20 KOs), a 32-year-old from the West Midlands, hasn’t fought at 147 pounds since 2017, but has won back-to-back bouts since dropping a majority decision against Abass Baraou in March 2024.

“Conah Walker is on the cusp of greatness,” Matchroom Boxing head Eddie Hearn said in a statement. “After his sensational win in Monte Carlo over McCormack in December, he couldn’t be closer to a world title shot.

“But he’s got to go through the trenches again, this time in front of his home fans. And a win over a tough, experienced operator in Sam Eggington would put an exclamation mark on his pursuit of glory.

“This is yet another brilliant UK card, and you can guarantee it will be a lively fight night.”

In the co-main event, British and Commonwealth junior middleweight titleholder Bilal Fawaz (11-1-1, 3 KOs) will make his first defense against Ryan Kelly (20-6-1, 8 KOs) while former British 160-pound champion Kieron Conway (23-4-1, 7 KOs) seeks a return to winning ways back at super middleweight against Mark Jeffers (20-2, 7 KOs).

Proper trade fight.

The only issue is it's on the wife's birthday but I'm sure she'll understand how important this is once I explain the career trajectories of both men.

Why Sean ? :maybe:
I love an upset pick - Connah's favourite, because surely he'll be a little bit too active, fresh, at his peak., maybe a little bit better... ?

Eggy just keeps beating these domestic level fighters.

Eventually this will stop but I can see him winning again.

It’s at a good weight for Sam, Sam lives the life, Conah admits he doesn’t between fights - mentioned it on the podcast with Dave Allen and Pat Brown. Sam retires fighters (Fordiglio and Rodriguez only had one more fight after), beaten loads of unbeaten fighters and fights where he was brought in to lose, he’s still a young man at 32. Sam is a big puncher too, he didn’t bang out the journeymen all day as a younger man as he was learning but look at all the wins where he wasn’t meant to.
