Lennox Lewis vs Vitali Klitschko 2 in 2004

Post by 2128778 »

What if Lewis wouldn't have announced retirement in February 2004, but would've instead granted Vitali a rematch?

After 8 months of sitting out and soul-searching, Lewis decides to please the public and gives Vit a return bout.

He gets in better shape for the rematch, though still likely isn't back to his best form.

Fight 2 takes place in April 2004, instead of Vitali-Sanders bout at LA's Staples Center - which was the home for their 1st bout and also hosted aforementioned Vitali-Sanders fight.

How it goes and who wins?

They're both bavk

Lewis won the first fight fair and square but still dodged a bullet. After some initial brave words about how he could do it again, I think he realised it was unlikely. So long as Vitali doesn't suffer another disasterous early cut, at this point in their careers, I think he stops Lennox around the 8th rd.

Im going with Klitschko by stoppage too. Lewis was past prime in 2003 and would be more past prime in 2004.

Vitali to take it, I see a more cagey encounter going the distance though.

Mark me down as another who thinks Lennox was wise not to pursue this rematch. I think Vitali would've stopped Lennox this time later in the bout

I’d have picked Lewis to scrap his way to another brutal win. He would have done whatever it took.

That final right hook to the temple Lennox landed, nearly ruined Vitali when they fought.

One thing is for sure. No matter what would've happened this will always be one of the great "what if's" of Boxing history, and I'll bet this subject will come up again in later years when younger generations discover this rivarly, and here we'll all be again saying what we're saying now.

Long live Great Boxing. Hopefully the world never gets too soft for it.

Indeed.

Btw, how's your project goes? I remember you telling me that you're watching a lot of boxing footage and working on creating your own list of best fighters ever.

P.S. Also, are you into those Fight Night games? I know, a lot of boxing fans are. There's a nice YouTube channel "Boxing Fight Simulations". It creates quality boxing sims. I know these guys and I might ask them to actually make Lewis-Vitali 2 😀

It's going well I think. Some people would disagree it seems

Lewis was fat and unprepared, but still won. He was old, but he could get a better shape and take that fight more seriously.

Lewis by another TKO.

I pick Vitali in a tough fight. Lewis was slipping athletically by 2004, no longer the Lewis of earlier years.
