Commonwealth title
Commonwealth title
What are people's thoughts on the Commonwealth title? I feel years ago it had prestige attached to it but in the last decade or so it was treated more as an eliminator for a British title. I was shocked to see that they've bought out commonwealth international and commonwealth silver titles. Do you think this will harm the cbc or invigorate it?
Re: Commonwealth title
It had some tradition and could've been another route between the domestic and world title instead of the European belt. However, nobody cares about the European belt and the commonwealth seems to be attached to another belt as well these days. The commonwealth as an institution is more political rather than geographical these days and is rarely mentioned. Coming up with these secondary belts makes no sense and seems like a desperate attempt to stay relevant. It will likely disappear from relevancy even more than it already has done.

Re: Commonwealth title
it's like a junior title to the british

despite in theory having a larger talent pool, the reality is the top fighters in other commonwealth countries like aus or canada or south efreeka rarely pursue it. and brits, while still fighting for it regularly, dont take it nearly as serious as british title or above.
the commonwealth games in the ams are much more interesting cuz you actually get the top guys from commonwealth countries boxing for it. and some like india have good amateur teams despite not being a factor as pros.

Re: Commonwealth title
I think it’s been devalued now they’ve brought the international and silver versions out of it it’s made it a silly belt sadly especially when people are parading them around

Re: Commonwealth title
So someone could be a quadruple CW champ in the same weight
Re: Commonwealth title
I still think the Commonwealth title has value, even if it isn't viewed the same way it was 20 or 30 years ago. Back then it felt like a genuine milestone on the path to world level, whereas now it often seems to sit just below the British title in terms of attention.wrighty wrote: ↑09 Jun 2026, 15:43 What are people's thoughts on the Commonwealth title? I'm not a fan of adding Silver and International versions, though. Boxing already has too many belts, and creating more variations risks diluting the prestige of the original Commonwealth title rather than strengthening it.

Re: Commonwealth title
British champions used to look to win the Commonwealth title to add a bit of authenticity and also give them a chance of facing decent international opposition.
Now it is seen as beneath the British which is a shame.

Re: Commonwealth title
I don't think there's been an African boxer that's held a commonwealth title since 2014.
Also since 2016 there's only been 4 boxers from countries outside of the UK that have held a commonwealth title.
I think we can safely say the title doesn't hold the weight it used to, it's more of an add on and trinket to have at weigh ins.

Re: Commonwealth title
It meant a big deal when I was a kid but now we're in the "four belt era" bollocks it's been diminished.
Probably the same with the FA Cup now compared to when I was a kid.

Re: Commonwealth title
Too many regional belts. And the WBO/IBF European belts.
Winning those helps get a ranking. Boxers are not confident anymore.
Whatever route you can go a world title if you can.
