I, too, think it's always been a thing, but in today's society there are so many more outlets for it to take place.

A host of Ingle fighters were hyped. Khaliq Shaffique. Steve something. George Collins too

It’s one of those things that’s to do with how a prospect is built. We’ve had some guys who were offensively unbelievable but history tells us there is always a guy out there who can extend them, nobody wins every fight by early KO. Thus until you’ve seen someone able to do it over the distance against a guy who doesn’t get hurt by their shots then don’t buy into anything.

I think Bruno was massively hyped as well before he got extended and beaten.

The hype derailed Moses in a different way. From 10-0 it wasn’t doable financially to put him on more than twice a year.

It's gone way over the top in the 21st century, especially with DAZN.

I'd push back on Gerry Cooney. The hype didn't start until the authentically terrifying way he blitzed Young, Lyle and Norton. Can't really blame people for getting excited about him.

Surely the large amounts of money to be made have had a big influence on this nowadays.

True, he did put up a brave effort against Holmes as well to be fair, albeit outclassed.

I'll replace him with Pele Reid , Frankie Gavin and Tony Agoggo

David Price earned some of his hype because of his amateur career and his sheer size. Everyone thought when he turned over to the pros he would be successful.
Turns out the lighter gloves and fighting more than three rounds didn't suit him. He was often winning the first three rounds (except for the Teper fight)

Great observation. Criminally inactive for a young fighter who was pulled from the amateur system early

Wilder had 30 come up fights. A guy with far less talent who held the WBC belt (hostage) for years. Tyson had 15 in his first year (and his gym sessions looked insane)

David Reid you could say was a case of too much too soon, but in his case he took a serious beating from Trinidad when he stepped up

Duane Bobick and Gerry Cooney never quite lived up to everyone's hopes and expectations for them.

Donald Curry was to be the 2nd coming of Sugar Ray Leonard

Some of those guys reached a higher level than the others, but all fell short of what everyone originally thought or hoped for their talent. Curry really had a decent career if you're not trying to make him another Sugar Ray, and just accept that he was a good fighter, not a great one.

Roman Greenberg was super hyped on secondsout for years but never really made an impact.

Mike Perez got very hyped as well when he landed in UK but then didn't kick on.

The hype is on with Johnny Fisher.

Also, if you finish your career with only 3 losses, against Holmes, Spinks and Foreman, I don't know if that's the same thing as losing on points to Martin Rogan.

the biggest hype job of all time was Francisco “Panchito” Bojado
