'Let's rumble' Ryan Garcia tells Gervonta Davis following approach for rematch
Ryan Garcia claims that old rival Gervonta “Tank” Davis has formally contacted him about a rematch.
Garcia blew away Conor Benn on September 12 to retain his WBC welterweight title in a high-profile thrashing in Las Vegas.
The victory, though it came against an opponent who had not fought at 147lbs for more than four years, appears to have confirmed Garcia’s place at the sport’s top table.
Davis found himself in the same position back in 2023 when he knocked out Garcia but a series of legal issues – specifically a civil lawsuit being brought against him by his ex-partner, and a surprise draw with Lamont Roach in his most recent outing in March 2025, have seen the lightweight’s star fade and his career stall.
The loss to “Tank” has long wrangled Garcia. The bout was set at a catchweight of 136lbs with a rehydration clause – no more than 10lbs could be gained after the weigh-in – that Garcia claims left him weakened. A body shot dropped him for the count in the seventh round.
Garcia has now fought up at 147lbs for his last three bouts and, after crushing Benn, he voiced his desire to take on WBA beltholder Teofimo Lopez in a unification battle next May.
But Davis, 30-0-1 (28 KOs), also got a mention from the welterweight titlist, triggering “Tank” to post on social media the sequel could happen – but only at 140lbs.
On Tuesday, Garcia inferred it had developed into a formal approach from Davis’ team.
"I can confirm Gervonta and Al [Haymon] have contacted my team," Garcia wrote on social media Tuesday.
"147 or nothing. And I want him to get a tune-up fight and be at his best when we fight.
"He has some stuff to handle, but we, for sure, are going to get it going on.
"Let's rumble."
