Minter vs Symmonds bill.

Post by stujones »

Okay, any thoughts on the bill - here are my initial snippets thoughts.

Main Event - Good fight, I gave Minter the edge in ability before the fight and I think I got this one right. Symmonds was a little dissapointing, seemed as if the occasion got to him a little in that he was wound up. Minter showed a good heart and a tremendous ferocity - all in all a good performance from Minter, who I think can go at least a little further.

Kevin Mitchell vs Frechman - Good performance from Mitchell, he is a thinker in there - although a defencive weakness (right hand over the top) was noted and the first question marks over his power are starting to appear in my book, its all very well saying that the Journeymen are tough to KO - it get harder the higher you step it up.

Gary Woolcombe - Good offensively, not much power though ad I'm afraid looks Chinny to me. Which is a shame, caue he's got some nice moves.

Lee Cook - Seemed impressive although the opponent was very poor didn't have much of a clue.

Paul Buckley - Not enough of the fight to see if he even won it. Janes won the last round on my card - can't see him going far.

I agree, Minter looked good last night and fought a lot better than I thought he could. Like you say Symmonds was disappointing he seemed way too hyped up during his ring enterence. He brought back memories of Farnell before the Takaloo fight and we all know what happened that night.

Minter - Symonds: Good fight. Minter just had that edge in class (in terms of defence and temperament) which you really need to succeed in that kind of KO atmosphere that the crowd can generate. Showed championship composure and deserved the win. Symonds can come again, he's got a lot to work with.

Mitchell - journeyman: Ian Darke was spot on with his commentary - just about all of it. Great commentary compared to what we're used to with Mitchell. Ian managed to keep it real enough, yet not go as far as to insult SN - and it's a ropey bridge commentating like that.
The fight itself told a lot about Mitchell. I was impressed with his boxing despite the obvious, numerous attributes in his favour. The flaws and question marks have all been said before, so no point repeating them over and over.

Gary Woolcombe - Damn, why not show the ring entrance?
Power is going to hold him back quite a bit as he moves up in class. He really threw every shot in the book at Scriven, who wasn't there to lie down, but did suffer with the speed and variation of Gary.
Not going to label him chinny yet - I don't really count going down in your debut that much - lot of nerves going on in there. And he did recover very quickly (and calmly) from the shot that rocked him. We'll see what happens when/if we see him again taking a shot.

Lee Cook - Think I've seen him before on Sky... maybe. Looked a bit ill, and a little Eastern European, but that aside he showed good professionalism in taking the man out. Not sure what Anderson(?) wants out of boxing, but hopefully he got it last night and can say he had a go.

Paul Buckley -

Saying that, Janes will be a handful to most. He could do with going for the knockout just a little bit harder, because he's going to get no favours from the referee's scorecard from this point on (if he ever did in the first place).

I had never seen Chas Symonds fight before, and it made me think how he had put together all those wins on his record.
He looks a real character and could not help but like him, but he had no defence what so ever last night, he swarmed forward and was wide open for the head shots, especially the uppercut, even when he did raise his arms his elbows were too far apart, even more dangerous when you don`t have a big punch to bail you out.

I am not sure how far Ross will go, he just seemed to lack that little ingredient for me.
All in all though an exciting fight, especially the ring entrances.

Kevin Mitchell looks like he will go far, he looks very clever indeed, shame he doesn`t sound it when he talks, I think next time Sky should provide subtitles.

Woolcombe just didn`t do it for me either, I can`t see him going too far, and I can`t see him hanging about once he realises that also.

And Janes as has been shown will get no favours, he is better than his losing record suggests, he just needs to give himself more room, he smothers even his own work and looks very bad doing it.

im new to boxing and still have a lot too learn but they were hyping this mitchell guy before the fight saying he could be the next big thing.
from what i saw he wasn't too impressive and had no power. he showed good composure and was in control but did he ever actually hurt the french guy?

one of the commentators said kevin mitchell vs amir khan would never happen. why is this? are they different weights?

Mitchell was so open for the right hand. That French guy should have just closed his eye's and threw it over the top everytime Mitchell came foward. He got him a few times also. He had no power at all though (French guy), even at the very low level he's fighting at, lucky for Mitchell.

Its gonna be a loooong time before he has the skills to step it up a level, thats if he ever can, which I doubt. I don't even know what the hell Mitchells style is. That was the first jab I think ive ever seen him throw and he abandoned it by round 4. So much for him being a puncher also, as the commentators where laughably talking him up as in previous fights. He's no puncher, so he better develop some boxing skills.

This was one bill where I enjoyed every single fight. Symonds-Minter was a tear-up, although as already mentioned, you have to wonder how Symonds got so many wins with his (lack of) defence.

Mitchell-Chakim was OK because it looks like Mitchell is actually thinking about what he does now, instead of just going for the 1-round blowout. Yet again the record of his opponent wasn't great, but I think this fight was more to see the improvements in the quality of Mitchell rather than his opponents.

Gary Woolcombe - I like the way he fights but he won't go far with his lack of power. If even Matt Scriven can walk through his shots and hurt him, what will happen when his promoters move him up in class?

Finally, could someone please explain to me what Eddie Anderson was doing in a boxing ring? It wasn't really a fight, more like a training session with the difference being that the punchbag was moving around. Did he even throw a punch throughout the fight? I know it was only his pro debut, but at this rate, he won't even be good enough to be called a journeyman.

As for Fred Janes, his record will stop him from challenging for honours, but I'd like to see him develop into - how can I put this - a "higher-class journeyman" - the kind of fighter that prospects have to face once they've dealt with the perennial losers and novices.

Just my opinion.

If you watched Mitchells last fight you would have seen a very effective jab, but i do wonder if you would have recognized it as judging by some of your previous posts you must be either blind stupid or both in which case you have my sympathy. As for Mitchells power he damaged a knuckle a while back and i suspect its still a problem. His last few fights have shown he has plenty of boxing skills(although i will agree he does leave himself open)but that said he's getting better every time he fights and does not deserve some of the crap negative comments he gets on this site!!! Mitchell looked like he would stop the Frenchman, in the first few rounds, then seemed to be content to cruise to a points win, one look at his hand afterwards and it was easy to see why with the knuckle badly swollen.

Gary Woolcombe is learning with every fight and is still filling out, he's only 21 and has just moved into the light-middleweight division, Scriven could have been stopped a lot earlier as he basically was a punch bag for most of the fight except when Gary lost his concentration for a split second in the 2nd and was tested by Scriven, but he realised his mistake and soon went back to his slick boxing.

Chas Symonds is another who has a lot to learn but at 22 he still has a lot of years left and is definately a crowd pleaser, on the night Minter just seemed to be more focused and got his game plan just right.

Big up to Rob Jeffries who won the Southern area lightweight title in Dagenham last night in a enthralling fight with Peter McDonagh, Jeffries had ten years out of the ring before he decided to pay off and won the title ninth fight and it was a pleasure to see Jeffries and trainer Rutherford's joy after the fight.

Nah, don't like calling these guys 'punch bags'. If Woolcombe had hung his chin out there Scriven would have clocked him - punch bags don't do that.

Yeah, it was a small hall classic. The atmosphere was electric inside the sweaty Leisure Center.
Really pleased Ross The Boss won.
I thought the wheels were gonna come off the Symonds machine against Brett James. Chas proved me wrong.
However, I thought Minter's inactivity may cost him but he proved far superior to Chas and anyone Chas has faced.
Ross can feature in some decent domestic clashes now. :TU:

Go fornicate yourself. Mitchell and his promotion have brought everything on themselves. He's hated for a reason. He gets on like a tosser in the ring and revels in bullying these low level journeymen who shouldn't even be in a boxing ring. He's an overhyped bully who will be found out the second he fights someone decent.

As I said as well, they where talking him up as some sort of monster puncher when it appears in reality he's totally the opposite. When he first came along I was reading articles on major boxing websites hyping him up like he's the second coming of Sugar Ray Robinson. They're fooling no one.

He's the only prospect ive seen act like a twat like that. If he could back up his antics then maybe, but he's clearly all hype. He the only prospect I can remember on here who's hated by everyone, except you of course. Go dig up some old threads on here and you'll see why he is hated. They're was a big one a while back.

Wasn't too interested at first to be honest, but turned on the box and saw the Symonds ring entrance and thought "this guy better be able to fight.." from then on I was hooked.

Chaz will get some stick, but it was his OTT pre fight talking that helped generate that great atmosphere I think ( "I'll go through him the same way Hagler went through his Dad!" )

Was pleased for Ross, that was an excellent win. I was even more pleased for his Dad - bygones be bygones - brought a tear to my eye  :TU:

was the same again mate.
chas sells some tickets but has found his level i think, and credit to him, he is exciting ive seen him 4 or five times live now and he never fails to be involved in a barnstormer.

Ross just had too much techinique for Chas who is a bit of a wild swinging front foot fighter who is all heart but minter just stomered through his punches.

great fight though as was the brett james fight. :TU:

I tell you what fight I want to see next (although I doubt it will happen for a while) is Ross Minter vs Matthew Hatton. I think that would be a tremendous match, I give the edge to Minter but only a small edge.

Forget who beat who on the bill. Did anyone notice that Gary Woolcombe came in to the ring looking a very strange orange colour. Made me laugh at the post fight talk to sky when he was wearing a t-shirt advertising someones tanning shop.

Yeah, he's full of heart and aggression, but doesn't seem to have a great deal of technical ability, personally, I thought he had a result against James, without the cuts, I think he would have run out of gas and got stopped, but fair play to him.

It does show that you don't have to go to a world title fight to have a cracking night's boxing.

That was one debate going around in my house on Friday. My sister was convinced that was a fake tan, surely that is illegal though.
