Whatever happened to....

Post by Chopping Right »

...a young fella by the name of Khalid Shafiq? All this talk about Amir Khan's professional potential has reminded me that back in 1998 Shafiq was being touted by Brendan Ingle as the "next Naz" and that he would win the British title in his first fight on British soil so talented was he. He was so young (17) that he could not fight in Britain so the intention was to build him up in Ireland as I remember and his first GB fight would be for the British title itself. He made a much-heralded debut in South Africa on a Sky-televised card the night Harry Simon beat Winky Wright, but looked a bit daft clowning about but getting caught a lot by a journeyman who held him to a draw. Then he completely disappeared without trace.
