Carnera vs Loughran???? fixed fight???

Post by BrocktonBlockbuster49 »

I know tommy was giving up huge size advatages but he was also the superior boxer and fighter and its hard for me to believe Tommy could not outbox him for 15 rounds. Did they pay tommy to lose???? i know carnaer broke loughrans toe but they never givemuch detail on this fight. anyone know details

It was on the level. Carnera had almost a hundred pounds on Tommy and he chewed on onions in the dressing room so he could tear up Tommy's eyes. The weight diffewrence and size was too much. Carnera fought a lot of fixed fights but he was not as incompetent as some make him out to be.

Yeah but tommy loughran was one of the best boxers of that era. he beat heavyweight max baer who gave carnera a beating. size or not, tommy should have been able to outbox him. Jack sharkey was 205 lbs and easily outboxed carnera. Carnera had no skills as a fighter and pawed with his jab. his best advatage was size and intimidation. I just think tommy still should have been able to outbox him.

...no ..they didn't have to fix it....just read enrique and you'll see why. loughran was an excellent boxer but he had neither the punch nor the strength to hold carnera off. that's why the fight was made. i've seen several rounds of this fight on film and there was no way loughran could win. his reach was too short for him to use his superb left jab, and going inside to fight carnera was playing into primo's only skill....using his strength to bully the much smaller opponent around.

the max baer carnera fight is irrelavent.....difference in styles...the old a beat b and b beat c and c beat a syndrome....(or is it paradigm?)

Loughran was one of the very best Light HWs of all time but at HW his lack of a punch always was a dillema, despite his superb boxing ability. If you watch the fight, Loughran actually is winning after the first 8-9 rounds but eventually Carnera just wore him down with his size and strength. Primo also shows pretty decent inside-fighting ability for such a big guy in the film . . he wasn't the complete bum many made him out to be.

I have to agree completly with dempseyfire on this on.

Carnera did have some fighting ability he was by no means the best Heavyweight Champion but he was much better than some people think, in my opinion.
