Joe Mesi, On the comeback trail?

Post by KOJOE90 »

I found this.

Joe Mesi wouldn't come out and say it, but in listening to his words, you could detect it.
He will fight again, and that's not some pun about his courtroom battle with the Nevada State Athletic Commission.

One gets a strong sense in speaking with Mesi he will put on the gloves, whether it be stateside or abroad. He will throw punches at an opponent. And, yes, he will take punches, too.

"I'm starving right now to box," said Mesi, who hasn't fought or sparred in 15 months. "I miss it terribly. I want to fight again."

Mesi and his legal team are expected to file a petition for judicial review with the 8th Judicial District Court in Las Vegas. The goal is to overturn on legal grounds the Nevada commission's medical suspension. Mesi has been idled since sustaining multiple brain bleeds in March 2004 against Vassiliy Jirov.

Mesi had publicly dismissed the possibility of fighting overseas so as not to upset Nevada. But now that the commission has handed down its ultimate rebuke - unanimously voting last week to uphold the suspension - the former No. 1 contender might as well start sparring and putting a fight together.

He said he has heard loose talk of him going to Ireland to face native son Kevin McBride, who defeated Mike Tyson on Saturday. Mesi also mentioned offers to fight in Germany.

The Nevada commission's suspension also prohibited Mesi from sparring as a condition of him seeking to regain his license. But that has been decided, so Mesi can go ahead and start training for a fight if he wishes.

"Factually, (sparring) would be a foolish thing for him to do," Nevada chief deputy attorney general Keith Kizer said. "But legally there's nothing that precludes him from sparring.

"His suspension solely bars him from fighting him in Nevada. It's the federal law that bans him from fighting in the U.S., and federal law doesn't address the sparring part."

Mesi, 31, said he would begin serious training on Monday with strength coach Chuck Pelitera. The first steps are running and gym workouts to get in shape. In a few weeks he could begin sparring in earnest.

"I'm very eager just to get back in the ring and throw some punches as soon as possible," Mesi said.
