Transcript of Audley Interview with Des Lynam on 23rd June 2005.

Read below the interview on BBC 5 Live yesterday with Des Lynam interviewing Audley following his day at Wimbledon.




Des: Audley Harrison, Gold Medallist from the Sydney Olympics was at Wimbledon today and watching Tim he was disappointed like the rest of us.

Audley: Yes, I was disappointed. It’s a lovely day, he was getting ahead and fair play to the other guy, there was a lot of pressure on the other guy, but Tim was just getting control of the guy mentally, looking like he was getting his flow in the last set and it just seemed to slip away at the end and it was a shame.

Des: How long are you home for because you are based in Las Vegas these days?

Audley: I am just home for a week, leaving Sunday morning and I wanted to come down here and catch some tennis – it’s lovely weather for it and it was a great day to come as Tim was on Centre Court.

Des: You play any tennis yourself?

Audley: Well I had 6 lessons but they told me to stick to boxing! I could never get that serve in! But I still play now and again.

Des: I can see you hitting a hell of a serve Audley!

Audley: Yeah – when it goes in which isn’t very often!

Des: Now you boxed just recently and you had a comeback fight didn’t you which you won handsomely. Tell us about it?

Audley: Yeah, I have been out for 12 months but last week I boxed in California against a guy called Rob Davis and I was able to stop him in the 7th round. I have been out for 12 months and my last fight was June 19th last year so it is good to be back in the ring. It was live in the States and back here too in the UK and it’s good to be back. 18 and 0 now so onwards and upwards.

Des: What are the plans for the near future?

Audley: I am planning to go again in August again in the States and then October and December and as long as I keep winning I am going to get the opportunity and hopefully summer time next year will be a title shot.

Des: Klitschko do you think?

Audley: Klitschko is the guy we are gunning for but there are a few other champions in Chris Byrd and Lamont Brewster but I am definitely going to get an opportunity over there and as long as I keep winning then definitely next summer time I should be in there fighting for one of the titles.

Des: I think you have the skill to beat Klitschko.

Audley: Yeah definitely skill wise people have said it all the time, skill wise and talent wise I am probably ahead of most of them but it is about getting the other stuff – the technique and getting the fitness and the conditioning. Because as you see here with tennis, there is a big psychological game in trying to keep your concentration for 36 minutes let alone 3 hours and I am getting all of those things now slowly but surely but I think next summer time you should definitely see me challenging for one of the titles.

Des: That’s great Audley. Good to see you here. Glad you enjoyed your day despite Tim’s defeat.

Audley: He will be back!

Seems like it was a chance interview as opposed to being pre planned which probably explains that.

So, following the grand plan as laid out there he's got 3/4 fights tops before a world title crack next summer. So if he fights in August and October then he needs to be facing a Top 10 guy come December.....

Be interesting to see who he fights in August. I don't want to hear any "shaking the rust off" crap either, the rust was shaken against Davis.

Now he's on US tv a title shot is definitely only a handful of fights away. I think he definitely did the right thing going to Vegas, its the boost his career needed. He'd still be negotiating peanuts fights with Allegedly for a crack at Skelton, Williams, Sprott etc if he'd stayed here.

DL: well, given the quality of your recent opponents, it probably will be
