Will Louis' record EVER be broken?
Will anyone ever beat his record for most Consecutive title defenses? I think his is truly special because it was the pre-sanctioning body days, when there was only one title, the WORLD title.
Anyone think it'll be broken soon? if ever?
I think records were made to be broken, so yes, I think someday it'll be broken, but not in the next 10-20 years. Here are the current top guys in terms of Title defenses (consecutively)
Sven Ottke has 12 of his IBF title, a record, breaking Nigel Benn's previous record of 9.
Bernard Hopkins has 14, tied with Carlos Monzon for the Middleweight record.

definately a 'no' in my opinion, well never know what could happen in 100 years but far from likely.
louis got so many defenses in there because he chose who he fought and picked crap opponents, where we get the term 'bum of the month'. when you look at how many real guuys he fought in that reign and you can easily knock 10 off his list. whereas today champs can still choose who they fight but they have to also fight mandatory's which though sometimes can be a joke, sometimes they can give a legit opponent.
but then with 3 major sanctioning bodies, soon to be 4 once the WBO is recognized, it allows for 3-4 good guys to hold belts and not be forced into facing eachother as often so its still possible but still unlikely

Wasn't Ricardo Lopez quite close to it or did he even break it?! Maybe somebody knows better how many defenses he had in the 105lbs. I believe the record could be broken in the heavys also. Larry Holmes was even close to it. Had he taken on a couple of (more) bums, then who knows. Remember, Joe didn't fight that often (due the war years). The Louis' record which I can't see beaten is the amount of years he spent as a champion.

Louis did have his bum of the month tour, but take a moment to consider this, wasn't Rahman considered a top 20 bum for Lewis? Look what happened there, even a bum of the month tour is risky as champ.
BTW, Ricardo Lopez had 21 title defenses of his WBC STrawweight title... and Louis spent 11 years, 7 months as champ, the 2nd closest to him is 11 years 4 months by Johnny Kilbane.
I also don't see Louis' record of uninterrupted title reign being broken, unless say Lennox Lewis keeps his title for another 11 years... hehe

2 things, i belive justin had a good point in that rahman was considered a bum by most, bt he was still a guuy ranked in most top 10 lists, and if you payed attention closely during the weeks leading to the pre fight you would have had all your money on rahman...stupid parents wouldnt loan me $100 i would have made over $1000! thats alot for a jobless kid such as myself...ill never forgive em! <-- a joke, ya know? ha ha
as for the thai guy dosnt 21 tie louis? im a bit rusty but that sounds like joes number offhand. and WBF counts as much as a regional belt in my books

Thanks TC, that's the one. I am in no way equating Samson's record to Louis' but he is now up to 37 defences of his WBF title. I remember him passing Louis's 25 a few years ago and the last I read he was on 35 but he's obviously had a couple more since then. Just did a quick search on the net and pulled up the following amongst others. On 2002-01-21 20:59, tomato can wrote:
the thai boxer mentioned above is samson dutchboy gym who has 21 defences of his wbf jr bantamweight title.
SAMSON SCORES 37TH DEFENSE OF HIS WBF 115-POUND TITLE
Unbeaten Thailander Samson Kratindaeng-Gym scored his 37th defense of the WBF super-flyweight belt as he decisioned Filipino Orly Padillo over 12 rounds at Sonkra Province, Thailand, on October 26. Samson, 42-0, 36 KOs, already surpassed Joe Louis' 25 defense and will keep his less prestigious title as long as he likes, since he has been defending it against less known Filipino boys. It will be up to you how you will evaluate this Thailander's unimaginable record. For your reference, the Filipino challenger Padillo is now unranked even by the Philippine domestic ratings but rated No.7 in the bantam division in the GAB ratings as of June of this year.

Yor thinking of Marciano's record of a champion retiring undefeated at 49-0. Holmes lost a controversial decision to Spinks in his 49th bout and Lopez already beat this record now at 50-0-1 and will likly retire undefeated because he still is the best in his division.

I can tell you a lot of stuff about records but one thing that i can be sure about is that no "WBF" title is a friggin world title. There's just no way that a worthless title that is basically only defended in his home land. Heck you are talking about Joe Louis' bum tour(s) how about a whole bum reign. T-Bone

Chavez didn't have 27 CONSECUTIVE TITLE DEFENSES OF THE SAME TITLE... like louis Did.
Defenses don't count the fight you actually win the belt in either
Chavez had 27 title defenses in total, but not consecutive, he moved weights and lost the titles a few times.
