Amateur boxing Just started - any help

Post by KANO »

#1# Just started amateur boxing, my coach says block my opponents jab with my back hand (my right), Is there an easier way to block, so I can block my opponents jab + attack at the same time ?

#2# I can take punches (even to the ribs) and I have killer punching power, trouble is I can't land a punch, I'm fast but some of those guys are too fast, any training tips to improve reflexes and hand speed ?

#3# I got hit in the eye and flukely my contact lense fell out, and it didn't bother me just put it back in but for the pros do they have vision requirements without aid, without glasses or lenses do you have to have good eyesight ?

#4# Would joining the police (not the band, the other kind) or Fire service, be a good move to make if I was serious about boxing, these lot have good amateur boxing programmes ?

#5# Anyone here been pro or know any pros? if so how long did they take to go from amateur to pro and how do you go about it ? Is it just doing well in amateur fights then getting noticed ?

#6# Being an amateur and having to work 9-5 not having loads of time to train, what are the most important training I should do, ie weight training, road running, how should I divide my time if I have about 1 or 2 hours each day to train ?

I have the same problem myself... One day i was hitting the mits while my cousin Carl Griffith, former USBA and IBC Americas Lightweight Champ, told me i hit like a mule, but need to work on my speed. he told me to help it,, shadow box in the mirror more, and to not throw every punch as a knockout punch (meaning don't cock back before every punch, just be loose in there). He also told me to keep hitting the speed bag often... if i were u i would take these tips... Carl is EXTREMELY intelligent in boxing!!

try useing your right hand as a cathcers mit to deflect jabs. this will allow you to "catch and throw at the same time". you have the option of catching a jab and throwing a jab, or if your fast enough you can catch with tour right and throw a right in return while your oponent is drawing his jab back. as for hand speed, beleive it or not what works for me in sprints and running laps. this will improve your overall speed, not just hands.

Do you live in the UK?

It took Oscar DeLaHoya 13 years of amateur boxing before he turned pro. You should have at least a couple of years amateur experience. The more national and international events you compete in, and win, the more marketable you become. The pro promoters and managers are always looking for, and at, national level, elite boxers.

My cousins carl and mike griffith both started boxing at a very early age... carl had his first amateur fight at the age of 10, and went 29-6-2 (13) as a pro.... dunno about mike but he started early also, and went 23-8 (9) as a pro, so they both been around a while!!

I also know tony hanshaw personally, he started boxing at the age of 3, and had his first amateur fight at the age of 5... so he's been around a while, he is now 18-0 (13) as a pro and beat kingsley ikeke, so watch for him in the future

to answer the question,,, i guess u just do good in the amateurs, get as many fights as u can (experience), try to win golden gloves or olympics or some kind of amateur title, and basically just try to get noticed

I first met Tony waaay back in the early 90's when he competed at the JO Nationals. If you see him, please tell him that Melanie Ley from Southern California (official) said hi and wishes him lots of luck. He is a special person - and so was his dad.
