Does Roy Jones Jr V's Tarver 3 interest anyone ???

Post by Foggy »

Boxrec has this listed down for October i think, is anyone actually intersted in this or do they think Roy is finished and should have stayed out of the ring, i personally would have liked him to retire but you know what these boxers are like.

I can only see this panning out one way, with Roy getting sparked out again.

I can't see Roy Jones winning this one, I feel his time has past and he should stay retired but I can understand his pride/ego forcing him to try and redeem himself and retire on a winning note.

Tarver TKO10.

Well I for 1 would be rooting for him. In anyone deserves one last try it's Roy Jones, after the ridiculous level of speed and skill that he brought to boxing.

I really dont see how Jones can win but would be happy to be proved wrong.

His reflexes are on the wane and his whole defence was based on reflexes so he will get hit a lot. And his punch resistance has to be questionable Johnson is not exactly a puncher and he knocked him out cold.

Jones also looks gunshy to me, especially since the Tarver fight. He hardly did anything against Johnson, except get knocked out.

I am interested actually. Very interested. I feel that Jones is enough of a modern great to:
1 – Deserve one more crack and
2 – Believe that somewhere he may still have what it takes to beat Tarver, who is ordinary when compared to RJJ at his best.

Yes, I too would be interested although I once thought Roy was THE most sensible businessman boxer but it seems like many he doesn't know his own body that well.

He was looking the business in the rematch vs Tarver, but looked very poor vs Johnson.

Of course, Roy deserves another chance I for one assumed that he had a legitimate reason for his defeats but the more he fights at Light Heavy the less convinced I am about his weight making issues.

I want to see him back, but I would like to see Jones vs Toney II at Heavyweight.

Did anyone see the re-runs of Cribs last weekend that showed RJJ's crib. Hilarious - he even spoke about himself in the third person then.

If this is at 175, then it's gonna be another KO for Tarver.

It certainly doesn't interest me and I'm one of the biggest Roy Jones fans that you will ever see. Fact is Jones is through...after the way that he hit the canvas and was really out in his last fight, he is just risking serious injury now. Tarver blasted him, but he was on his feet before ten...he was out cold against Johnson!

Jones Jr. abused his body by cutting almost 30lbs in six months - not fat, but pure muscle.

His fights in 2004 showed his body doesn't work for him the way it used to.

Though maybe he knows something we don't? He's a very smart guy...

I thought that too - but then he signed the rematch with Tarver. He should have learned that lesson - he got away with a drab performance, he should have moved up. Now this "abused body" line (which I do agree with) is wearing thinner and thinner as he continues to CHOOSE to fight what many experts feel is "out of his weight devsion". If it is out of his weight devision then why continue to fight there.

I think he's always been a natural 12 stone fighter, even all during the years and fights at 175lbs. Perhaps, at the age of 36(?), and after a year's inactivity where he kept fit* he feels more acclimatised to light-heavy than he's ever been before?

*check all the times he appeared for HBO during this time - he has never looked a pound above 175lb... in fact he has looked below that on occasion.

He still has the handspeed - showed it even in the Johnson fight - and the brain obviously (listen to his commentary), but in his last two fights his footwork and general mobility in the ring has looked at the lowest level ever.

I'm thinking maybe this was purely to do with pacing rather than solely age. Maybe he has rebuilt his stamina over this past year? Based on the Johnson fight I'm not sold on that - though I guarantee Tarver will not fight more than 30 or 40 seconds fast, in any round, so his endurance won't be tested as much as it was in the Johnson fight.

The first 3 minutes will probably tell the outcome of this fight.

If it's at a higher weight, then Jones wins. Does anyone know?

It looked more like not wanting to get up against Johnson.

He made a more unconscious decision to get up against Tarver, just because he was getting up, doesn't mean he was clearer.

It had more to do with not wanting to get up against Johnson.

He was more out of it against Tarver, just because he was getting up, doesn't mean he was clearer. In his case, I think it's the opposite.
Actually i think the scary way his head and feet were hovering over the canvas suggested that he was trying to get up against Johnson.

Extra aging time and inactivity will not help him against Tarver. I see a 3rd successive KO for RJJ unless he stays retired.

if I have my dates right, he will have been 13 months out of the ring and coming off two pretty brutal KO's. hardly ideal for a swansong

RJJ is one of the extraordinary fighters of my lifetime, but I don't see any upside in this fight for him. The money surely cannot mean that much to him now and his legacy will take a plunge if he suffers a beating.

it has to be an ego thing and ego has led to many a crippled boxer

Roy has been inactive for too long to have a decent chance in this fight. He may win the first 2 rounds, but then he will get winded and will start taking a beating. Tarver should win by stoppage inside 7 rounds. Roy will not have enough skills and grit to beat Tarver at this point. With his huge speed advantage gone, and his reflexes shot, he is pretty ordinary at this point and Tarver will punish him badly. They Tarver will stop a bruised, battered and bleeding Roy.

Dont see any point in them fighting again and I wont watch it. I will just read the result in the papers. Its not worth the money because it is a total mismatch. Roy did nothing to give him a fair chance to beat Tarver in the last 12 months. Getting koed cold by Johnson after being battered the whole time and then retiring and being incative for 13 months is not the stuff that would give Roy the practice and the confidence to fight Tarver with a decent chance. IT is only his ego and disconnect with reality that propels Roy to face Tarver again.
IT is not the money and it is not the legacy, but the ego. And Roy will pay with another ko loss for that unwise impulse.

Agreed. Without his speed and relflexes, Jones is worse than mediocre, because he has experience of relying on sound fundamentals. He still tries to fight like he is the one with speed and reflex advantages, when he should be trying to adapt and use the jab and keep a tight guard more, but it's not in his nature.

He was stiff as fornicate against Johnson, and hardly threw a shot.

I am one of the only ones who thought Jones ruined himself going up to meet Ruiz and then trying to make LH within a year without taking a break, I think Jones will come back and beat Tarver, who i thought looked very ordinary vs Johnson, I'd say woods beats Tarver and Johnson on his last performance.

Hmm, so let's see, Jones Struggles with Tarver in their first fight, gets knocked out in their second, and then gets banjaxed by Johnson.

So now you think Tarver who fought on better than level terms with Johnson will lose to Jones....I know styles make fights, but how does that follow?

I think Steve is trying to suggest that its the time that Roy needed to get adjust to the Light Heavyweight devision again will result to an improved performance.

Personally, I cannot believe Roy he said "you aint seeing me at Light Heavy again" after the first Tarver fight, so what is he doing here.

>>>It had more to do with not wanting to get up against Johnson<<<

That's bullshit, anyone could see that Jones was OUT against Johnson, sorry but Tarver did not hurt him as bad, even though the shot looked to be more powerful it did not have anywhere near the effect that the Johnson shot and then the back of his head hitting the canvas did...but maybe Tarver could make up some kind of excuse about why Johnson really knocked Jones out and why he just TKO'd Jones because no matter how you try to argue it...that's how it is, or was! But this time around Tarver may just knock Jones out cold...it's not going to be considered a big feat if it happens and if Tarver loses...well...then that will completely sum up his career, but there is a slim chance of that happening at 175...maybe if they each came in at about 190!
